"A technique based on the min-max error criterion is proposed for identifying a dynamic system in terms of a discrete-time model from the system response to a deterministic input. A linear, single-input/single-output, lumped-parameter, time-invariant (at least during the measurement interval) system is assumed. Although the resulting problem is non-linear, it is shown that linear programming techniques are applicable if a realistic approximation is made. The technique is implemented on the digital computer and evaluated by considering a number of typical discrete-time systems. The effects of additive noise are also considered"--Abstract, page ii.

"The problem of reducing the effects of impulsive noise on binary communication systems is considered. A digital simulation of such a system is developed in order to find a nearly optimum (minimum probability of error criterion) nonlinear device to precede detection. "This paper describes the known methods of generating next-state equations for asynchronous sequential circuits operating in normal fundamental mode. First, the methods that have been previously developed by other authors are explained and correlated in a simple and uniform language in order that the subtle differences of these approaches can be seen. This review is then followed by a development of a new method for generating minimal next-state equations which has some advantages over the previous methods. "A bit rate filter type signal conditioner/bit synchronizer used in a split-phase PCM system is modeled digitally in three stages to determine overall system performance. General computer algorithms are developed to approximate independent operation of each major segment within the device. Bit rate effects and signal time-base error are investigated yielding the characteristic G-curves for the phase detector. These characteristics facilitate subsequent analysis of a linear equivalent digital-data-transition tracking phase-locked loop under several typical time-base error input conditions. Using bit error probabilities as performance criteria, the conditioner/synchronizer is found to perform adequately at signal-to-noise ratios exceeding +10dB. For inputs below …

"When a microwave signal with a frequency near the electron upper hybrid resonance is applied to a magnetoplasma, it will excite the plasma. The perturbation of plasma can be detected by using Langmuir probes. The particular plasma used in this experiment is an argon discharge type and the density is relatively low (n~10⁸ cm⁻³). The electron temperature is about 7000º K. Because a magnetic field is applied to the plasma, it is necessary to use the probe theory in a magnetic field to calculate the electron number density from the electron temperature. "A digital computer model of a Costas loop has been employed to study the effects of Gaussian noise and continuous-wave interference on the detection of biphase modulated signals. The dependence of bit-error probability, mean-square error between input and output, phase-error variance and threshold on signal-to-Gaussian-noise power ratio, interference-to-Gaussian-noise power ratio and frequency offset of the interference have been investigated and compared with previously obtained experimental results. "This paper presents an algorithm for deriving an optimum test sequence for detecting faults in a synchronous machine. In this study, the flow table is used as a tool to generate the fault detection tests. The fault stuck-at-1 (or stuck-at-0 ) is said to be present when a permanent signal valued 1 (or 0) appears on a component of the machine. Only single faults are treated . "The General Purpose Automatic Test System was developed for the Air Force as a system to automatically test and fault isolate an electronic unit under test. The Test System is a building block concept and this paper developed the hardware and programming software necessary to integrate an oscilloscope into the system. A Tektronix Type 564 oscilloscope with a Tektronix Type 3A5 Programmable Amplifier and a Tektronix Type 3B5 Programmable Time Base was used. A discrete, deterministic mathematical model has been developed for the bulk base region of graded base devices that accounts for both the effects of neutron-induced recombination and built-in electric field in the base region at low, intermediate, and moderate current/injection levels. Exact expressions are developed for the bulk base recombination current and the collector current as functions of neutron fluence. Exact expressions are derived for the base recombination term and the relative rates of neutron-induced base current increase and collector current decrease. A dependence of surface degradation induced by ionizing radiation in matched oxide-passivated silicon planar epitaxial transistors on junction fringing electric field strength present during exposure is reported. The electric field strength and gamma dose dependence are investigated of the decrease in the forward current gain, hFE (as reflected by the increase in the surface recombination current component), the increase in the surface recombination velocity (as reflected by the increase in the reciprocal of the minority carrier lifetime), and the increase in junction capacitance. This investigation has characterized the effects of fast neutron bombardment on a typical n-p-n transistor (2N914) of a common emitter amplifier operating at high-frequencies (>100 MHz) by means of s-parameter measurements from 120 MHz to 350 MHz, inclusive, every 10 MHz. The changes in the four (4) s-parameters and the trends and consequences of neutron bombardment are examined pictorially on graphs. The general effect of fast neutron bombardment is to decrease the magnitude of each s-parameter for frequencies below z. fT (where z = (O/1013)0.1). This paper develops a method for calculating the required dc field current of a three-phase synchronous ac generator for known dc load conditions and machine characteristics. The method is simple to apply and has shown good agreement with test data. The method is of utility for preliminary design and analysis of rectified output alternators, such as may be used in excitation systems of the largest ac generators, space vehicle power applications, or high-power industrial rectification.
