Using The Soar Approach To Teach Middle School Students About Math And Science Concepts Found In Engineering, Rachael A. Wagner
Using The Soar Approach To Teach Middle School Students About Math And Science Concepts Found In Engineering, Rachael A. Wagner
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
In order to address the lack of knowledge about the engineering profession in middle-level students, the project described in this Honors Thesis was developed. Through the creation of an afterschool program centered on engineering, students were able to apply the math and science concepts covered to design, build, and test a bridge. One particular lesson from this after-school program was highlighted in this thesis, the lesson covering the Pythagorean Theorem, to demonstrate the use of SOAR methodology in the lesson’s development and later use in the classroom. The effectiveness of the Pythagorean Theorem lesson was evaluated positively based on the …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The NSF-funded Redshirt in Engineering Consortium was formed in 2016 with the goal of enhancing the ability of academically talented but underprepared students coming from low-income backgrounds to successfully graduate with engineering degrees. The Consortium takes its name from the practice of redshirting in college athletics, with the idea of providing an extra year and support to help promising engineering students complete a bachelor’s degree. The Consortium builds on the success of three existing “academic redshirt” programs and expands the model to three new schools. The Existing Redshirt Institutions (ERIs) help mentor and train the new Student Success Partners (SSP), …

Detecting Suicide Risk From Wristworn Activity Tracker Data Using Machine Learning Approaches, Pallavi Atluri
Detecting Suicide Risk From Wristworn Activity Tracker Data Using Machine Learning Approaches, Pallavi Atluri
Electrical Engineering Theses
Suicide is a prevalent cause of death worldwide and depression is a primary concern of many suicidal acts. It is possible that an individual during depression never has any suicidal thoughts at all. On the other hand, some individuals in stable condition with no apparent symptoms of depression feel urges to commit suicide (suicidal ideation). Many such individuals never let anyone know what they are feeling or planning. Suicidal ideation considered an important precursor to suicidal acts.
Detecting the suicide risk in individuals with mood disorders is a major challenge. The current clinical practice to assess suicide risk in these …

Mems Fabrication Of A Peristaltic Pump, Nicholas Amendola
Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference
From Merriam-Webster dictionary, it states that peristalsis can best be described as "successive waves of involuntary contraction passing along the walls of a hollow muscular structure (such as the esophagus or intestine) and forcing the contents on- ward"[1]. The objective of this project was to create a peristaltic micropump at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Semiconductor and Microsystem Fabrication Laboratory (SMFL). Using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) to create a peristaltic pump to lower the energy used to move a uid through a tube. Using three single micro- machined micro-pumps in a straight line to create this type of action. Fabrication …

Motivational Decline And Recovery In Higher Education Stem Courses, Anna M. Young, Paul J. Wendel, Joan M. Esson, Kathryn M. Plank
Education Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works
Decline in student motivation is a concern for STEM education, especially for underrepresented groups in the sciences. Using the Science Motivation Questionnaire II, 41 foundational STEM courses were surveyed at the beginning and end of each semester in an academic year at a small primarily undergraduate university. Significant pre- to post-semester declines were observed in each of five measured motivational factors (Intrinsic motivation, Career motivation, Self determination, Self-efficacy, and Grade motivation), with effect sizes ranging from 0.21 to 0.41. However, in the second semester pre-survey, four motivational factors rebounded, including three returning to initial levels, suggesting that the observed motivational …

The shortage of teachers prepared to teach career and technical education (CTE) courses, or willing to work in certain locations (e.g. inner city, rural), has motivated the desire to explore solutions such as alternative routes to teacher licensure (ARL). Most ARL programs bypass colleges of education and provide a different approach to preparing individuals to teach, leaving many to wonder about the quality and knowledge of these teachers. Specific areas, such as CTE, have seen a large influx of ARL teachers in recent years. We sought to determine school principals’ perceptions of ARL CTE teachers. We found principal support for …

The water would come from the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers. He envisioned an increase in the State valuation of $6,000,000,000. Additionally hydro-electric current generation would furnish all the power necessary for construction as well as supply more power than would be needed for use on electric railroads, in municipal lighting, for manufacturing, and for domestic use in homes, and …
A Comparison Of Traditional Education And Project-Based Education In Construction Management, Trey Miller
A Comparison Of Traditional Education And Project-Based Education In Construction Management, Trey Miller
Honors College Theses
Construction is a rapidly moving and constantly changing industry. The skills needed to manage the complex task of running a job site safely, on schedule, and within budget, are unique to the field. Construction Management as an academic field is relatively new discipline. Therefore the field is still rapidly evolving. In many cases, classes are taught by engineering professors, which leads to an engineering-focused education as opposed to a Project Management focused education. Therefore Construction Management students are not receiving the “hands-on” experience early enough in their studies. By structuring classes around an applied project, students will attain a more …

Human Behavior Modeling For Residential Energy Consumption, Mesfer Alrizq
Human Behavior Modeling For Residential Energy Consumption, Mesfer Alrizq
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
Electric utility companies are interested in load profile (electricity consumption) data for expansion planning. Conventional methods of collecting the load profile data, such as surveys and metering, are tedious and time consuming activities. Cumbersome data collection processes also pose barriers. We present an innovative behavior model for generating electricity consumption load profiles. The model, based on fuzzy logic and activity graphs, requires minimum consumer data and can be easily updated to adapt to changes in technology. We demonstrate the accuracy of our model against real world data.
