This study investigates the use of scaffolded weekly assessments with individual feedback in promoting deep learning and managing workload among engineering students in online education. The research focuses on how these assessment strategies shape students’ learning approaches and workload distribution. The study involved the implementation of weekly assessments aligned with intended learning outcomes, complemented by personalized feedback. Data collection comprised student surveys and qualitative feedback to assess the impact on learning approaches and workload management. This mixed methods study explored possible factors that could impact elementary school students’ engineering design and optimization decisions. Data were collected from six teachers and 117 students in six fourth grade classrooms that implemented the Engineering is Elementary geotechnical engineering unit, A Stick in the Mud: Evaluating a Landscape. Students were to recommend to villagers their site decision of where to build a TarPul bridge based on four properties: soil type, villager preference, amount of compaction needed, and location less prone to erosion. Spatial skills are vital in many STEM disciplines, starting at or prior to university training, and often extending throughout one’s career. The most widely used spatial ability measures (e.g., PSVT: R, MRT) rely on what I refer to as receptive skills: examining an object or design, mentally transforming it, and comparing it to given alternatives. This study examines 52 heat-related roofing incidents recorded by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) between 2003-2024 to describe patterns in outcomes and identify trade-specific prevention opportunities. Researchers built a structured dataset from OSHA investigation summaries and analysed frequencies of the incidents and their associations with month, time of day, project type, end use, and age to complement a thematic review of narrative abstracts. Fifty-eight percent of cases were fatalities, with the remainder split between hospitalized and non-hospitalized injuries; these statistics underscore the consequences of heat events that trigger OSHA reporting. Arabic SMS-based e-commerce platforms pose unique challenges due to the spontaneous and noisy nature of user-generated text (e.g., abbreviations, dialectal Arabic, or “Arabizi” transliterations). In this paper, we present Classified Ads Text Service (CATS) 2.0, an improved classified ads system that combines probabilistic large language models (LLMs) with deterministic graph-based knowledge representations to achieve robust understanding and matching of Arabic SMS content. Maintaining water quality is crucial for both public health and environmental sustainability. This study proposes a machine-learning- (ML-) and Internet-of-Things- (IoT-) based approach to water quality prediction that utilizes explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) and data classification techniques. The proposed approach integrates IoT devices to enhance real-time data collection, facilitating continuous monitoring and early anomaly detection. Ten different ML classifiers—Decision Trees, K-Nearest Neighbors, XGBoost, Naïve Bayes, Logistic Regression, AdaBoost, Random Forests, Support Vector Machines, Voting, and Multi-Layer Perceptron—were evaluated to find out which one works best for predicting water quality. To fly an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), commonly referred to as a “drone,” the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires pilots to pass a knowledge test. There is no requirement at the state or federal level for drone operators to demonstrate the ability to operate a UAS. The National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) has created an exam for public and private entities to assess basic UAS flight proficiency. Integrating authentic, environmental-based data can make STEM instruction more meaningful. As part of a broader high school STEM curriculum, I designed a lesson that connects mathematical and statistical concepts, technology, and environmental data through environmental data analysis to develop real-world problem solving. Using local deer mortality data, I examined how descriptive statistics and data interpretation could reveal population and ecological patterns. Designing with real data highlighted how mathematics can serve as a lens for understanding environmental issues and promote connections across STEM disciplines. Air quality impacts public health, environmental sustainability, and quality of life. However, accurate and easily accessible short-term air quality forecasting is challenging to find. This project, Clear Skies, presents a machine learning–based system for forecasting next-day Air Quality Index (AQI) levels across regions in Ohio. By using historical pollutant data with variables such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure, the system finds relationships that traditional statistical models often don’t show.

In this project, we developed a theme of Green Energy Innovation (GEI) for K-8 integrated STEM (iSTEM) out-of-school learning that includes scientific concepts, engineering design, mathematical measurement, and data collection. Anchored in engineering design (English, 2016), the researchers designed a curricular unit that included simple and complex solar car models. The researcher-designed solar car prototypes serve as STEM kits that support students’ iSTEM-based engineering design activities.

In ab initio flight training, the quality of the feedback a flight instructor provides their student is essential to their success. While other high-performance and safety-critical industries have incorporated the use of video recordings into training and assessments, the aviation industry generally has not. This paper presents The Incredible Bulk, a multimodal, simulation-based engineering challenge that introduces Grades 4–12 to maritime careers and digital transformation. Students assume the roles of different maritime careers to assemble aircraft carrier bulkhead systems using: VR for spatial orientation and task preview; a 3D model as visual work instruction; paper blueprints for part identification and dimensioning; 3D-printed components for hands-on assembly; and an AR app for quality assurance/inspection. Grounded in constructionism and cognitive apprenticeship, the plan–build–inspect loop externalizes thinking and situates coached, authentic practice that advances engineering design, systems thinking, and technological literacy.

This poster describes a rapid, low-cost active-learning routine that can be added to existing lectures at WVU Tech with minimal redesign. Wip: Arduino-Based Pbl To Foster Entrepreneurial Mindset, Nathan Q. Holland, Vukica M. Jovanovic

This work-in-progress paper examines a semester-long project-based learning initiative begun in an introductory engineering course during the Fall 2025 semester. The project aims to enhance students' hands-on experience by integrating information literacy, the engineering design process (EDP), and an entrepreneurial mindset (EM) [1]. The objective is to boost student confidence in teamwork, technical problem-solving, and application of skills, preparing them for future courses in their discipline. Students in this introduction to engineering course received an Arduino Uno R3 Controller board kit and additional sensors.
