Results are presented from an NSF supported project that is geared towards advancing the development and use of virtual reality (VR) laboratories, designed to emulate the learning environment of physical laboratories. As part of this project, an experiment in the undergraduate thermo-fluids laboratory course titled "Jet Impact Force" was transformed into a 3-D virtual reality experiment using the widely used MAYA R and VIRTOOLS R software. In order to facilitate students' interactions with the newly created 3-D interactive, immersive and stereoscopic virtual laboratory environment, the human computer interfaces (HCI) were programmed and incorporated in the simulation software. Two immersion levels …

A Self-Tuning Optimal Controller For Affine Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems With Unknown Internal Dynamics, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan Jan 2012

A Self-Tuning Optimal Controller For Affine Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems With Unknown Internal Dynamics, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel neural network (NN) - based self-tuning controller for the optimal regulation of affine nonlinear continuous-time systems. Knowledge of the internal system dynamics is not required whereas the control coefficient matrix is considered to be available. the proposed nonlinear optimal regulator tunes itself in order to simultaneously learn the optimal control input, optimal cost function, and the system internal dynamics using a single NN. a novel NN weight tuning algorithm is derived which ensures the internal system dynamics are learned while simultaneously minimizing a predefined cost function. an initial stabilizing controller is not required. Lyapunov methods …

Optimal Adaptive Control Of Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems In Strict Feedback Form With Unknown Internal Dynamics, H. Zargarzadeh, T. Dierks, S. Jagannathan Jan 2012

Optimal Adaptive Control Of Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems In Strict Feedback Form With Unknown Internal Dynamics, H. Zargarzadeh, T. Dierks, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel approach is proposed for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) optimal adaptive control of nonlinear continuous-time systems in strict feedback form with uncertain internal dynamics. First, it is shown that the optimal adaptive tracking problem of strict feedback systems can be reduced to an optimal regulation problem of affine nonlinear continuous-time systems expressed as a function of tracking error by designing a properly chosen adaptive feedforward control input. Then, an optimal adaptive feedback scheme is introduced for the affine system to estimate the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation online which becomes the optimal feedback control input for the closed-loop system. …

Optimal Adaptive Controller Scheme For Uncertain Quantized Linear Discrete-Time System, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan Jan 2012

Optimal Adaptive Controller Scheme For Uncertain Quantized Linear Discrete-Time System, Qiming Zhao, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the Bellman equation is used to solve the optimal adaptive control of quantized linear discrete-time system with unknown dynamics. to mitigate the effect of the quantization errors, the dynamics of the quantization error bound and an update law for tuning the range of the dynamic quantizer are derived. Subsequently, by using adaptive dynamic programming technique, the infinite horizon optimal regulation problem of the uncertain quantized linear discrete-time system is solved in a forward-in-time manner without using value and/or policy iterations. the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is verified by standard Lyapunov stability approach in the presence …

Measurement And Modeling Of Passive Surface Mount Devices On Fr4 Substrates, Rahulkumar Sadanand Koche Jan 2012

Measurement And Modeling Of Passive Surface Mount Devices On Fr4 Substrates, Rahulkumar Sadanand Koche

Dissertations and Theses

Passive components like resistors, capacitors and inductors are used in every electronic system. These are the very basic components which affect the system performance at higher frequencies and it is necessary to understand and model the behavior of these components in a very accurate manner. This work focuses on utilizing Printed Circuit Board (PCB) test boards, or fixtures, made of FR4 for characterizing Surface Mount Device (SMD) components. Agilent's Advanced Design System (ADS) microwave circuit simulation software was used for designing the microstrip transmission lines as well as for generating the layout for manufacturing of the PCB. SMD resistors, capacitors …

Memristor-Based Reservoir Computing, Manjari S. Kulkarni Jan 2012

Memristor-Based Reservoir Computing, Manjari S. Kulkarni

Dissertations and Theses

In today's nanoscale era, scaling down to even smaller feature sizes poses a significant challenge in the device fabrication, the circuit, and the system design and integration. On the other hand, nanoscale technology has also led to novel materials and devices with unique properties. The memristor is one such emergent nanoscale device that exhibits non-linear current-voltage characteristics and has an inherent memory property, i.e., its current state depends on the past. Both the non-linear and the memory property of memristors have the potential to enable solving spatial and temporal pattern recognition tasks in radically different ways from traditional binary transistor-based …

A Study Of Localization And Latency Reduction For Action Recognition, Syed Zain Masood Jan 2012

A Study Of Localization And Latency Reduction For Action Recognition, Syed Zain Masood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The success of recognizing periodic actions in single-person-simple-background datasets, such as Weizmann and KTH, has created a need for more complex datasets to push the performance of action recognition systems. In this work, we create a new synthetic action dataset and use it to highlight weaknesses in current recognition systems. Experiments show that introducing background complexity to action video sequences causes a significant degradation in recognition performance. Moreover, this degradation cannot be fixed by fine-tuning system parameters or by selecting better feature points. Instead, we show that the problem lies in the spatio-temporal cuboid volume extracted from the interest point …

Efficient And Scalable Evaluation Of Continuous, Spatio-Temporal Queries In Mobile Computing Environments, Jonathan M. Cazalas Jan 2012

Efficient And Scalable Evaluation Of Continuous, Spatio-Temporal Queries In Mobile Computing Environments, Jonathan M. Cazalas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A variety of research exists for the processing of continuous queries in large, mobile environments. Each method tries, in its own way, to address the computational bottleneck of constantly processing so many queries. For this research, we present a two-pronged approach at addressing this problem. Firstly, we introduce an efficient and scalable system for monitoring traditional, continuous queries by leveraging the parallel processing capability of the Graphics Processing Unit. We examine a naive CPU-based solution for continuous range-monitoring queries, and we then extend this system using the GPU. Additionally, with mobile communication devices becoming commodity, location-based services will become ubiquitous. …

State And Output Feedback-Based Adaptive Optimal Control Of Nonlinear Continuous-Time Systems In Strict Feedback Form, H. Zargarzadeh, T. Dierks, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper focuses on neural network (NN) based adaptive optimal control of nonlinear continuous-time systems in strict feedback form with known dynamics. a single NN is utilized to learn the infinite horizon cost function which is the solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation in continuous-time. the corresponding optimal control input that minimizes the HJB equation is calculated in a forward-in-time manner without using value and policy iterations. First, the optimal control problem is solved in a generic multi-input and multi output (MIMO) nonlinear system in strict feedback form with a state feedback approach. Then, the approach is extended to single …
