Intelligent transportations system (ITSs) have emerged to increase safety and convenience of people in vehicles. In an ITS, communication devices in the vehicle or along the streets send the information gathered from the vehicle to information management centers as well as sending processed information to the vehicle. Furthermore, it is necessary to locate the exact location of the vehicle on a digital map in order to navigate the vehicle precisely in control and navigation systems. One of the technologies for this purpose is the antilock brake system (ABS), which can avoid accidents effectively and can also be utilized to determine …

X-Search: An Open Access Interface For Cross-Cohort Exploration Of The National Sleep Research Resource, Licong Cui, Ningzhou Zeng, Matthew Kim, Remo Mueller, Emily Ruth Hankosky, Susan Redline, Guo-Qiang Zhang
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Background: The National Sleep Research Resource (NSRR) is a large-scale, openly shared, data repository of de-identified, highly curated clinical sleep data from multiple NIH-funded epidemiological studies. Although many data repositories allow users to browse their content, few support fine-grained, cross-cohort query and exploration at study-subject level. We introduce a cross-cohort query and exploration system, called X-search, to enable researchers to query patient cohort counts across a growing number of completed, NIH-funded studies in NSRR and explore the feasibility or likelihood of reusing the data for research studies.
Methods: X-search has been designed as a general framework with two loosely-coupled components: …

With recent increases in incidences of political violence globally, the world has now become more uncertain and less predictable. Of particular concern is the case of violence against civilians, who are often caught in the crossfire between armed state or non-state actors. Classical methods of studying political violence and international relations need to be updated. Adopting the use of data analytic tools and techniques of studying big data would enable academics and policy makers to make sense of a rapidly changing world.

Detecting malicious peers is a challenging task in peer-to-peer networks due to their decentralized structure and lack of central authority. Trust models can help identify malicious peers by maintaining information about peer relations and interactions. Keeping information about trust relations helps to reduce risks when providing or using services. This paper introduces two consistency concepts in trust management. Feedback consistency is used to evaluate how consistent feedback is with respect to past feedbacks. On the other side, peer consistency measures consistency of a peer's past feedbacks. These metrics help to reduce malicious interactions and increase successful downloads. Furthermore, the model …

Investigation of the variability of total electron content (TEC) is one of the most important parameters of the observation and monitoring of space weather, which is the main cause of signal disturbance in space-based communication, positioning, and navigation systems. TEC is defined as the total number of electrons on a ray path. The Global Positioning System (GPS) provides a cost-effective solution for the estimation of TEC. Due to various physical and operational disturbances, TEC may have temporal and spatial domain gaps. Global ionospheric maps (GIMs) provide worldwide TEC with 1- to 2-h temporal resolution and $2.5^{\circ}\, \times 5^{\circ}$ spatial resolution …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Fusion of spectral, spatial, and temporal information is an effective method used in many satellite remote sensing applications. On the other hand, one drawback of this fusion is an increase in complexity. In this paper, we focus on developing a fast and well-performed classification method for agricultural crops using time-series SAR data. In order to achieve this, a novel two-stage approach is proposed. In the first stage, a high-dimensional feature space is obtained using time-series dual-pol SAR data and morphological operators. Spectral, spatial, and temporal information is combined into a single high-dimensional feature space. In the second stage, a dimension …

Nonlinear Analysis Of Hybrid Phase-Controlled Systems In Z-Domain With Convex Lmi Searches, Nur Syazreen Ahmad, Pei Ni Goh
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Phase-controlled systems such as phase-locked loops (PLLs) have been used in numerous applications ranging from data communications to speed motor control. The hybrid case where only the phase detector is digital while others are analog has advantages over the classical PLLs in the sense that it provides a wider locking range and is more suitable when the input and output signals come in digital waveforms. Although such systems are inherently nonlinear due to the phase detector's characteristics, the nonlinearity is often bypassed in order to ease the analysis and design methods. This, however, will give erroneous results when the phase …
