Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The virtual reality simulator of the video-assisted thoracoscopic (VATS) surgery lobectomy is of great value to the surgeon's surgical training and planning. In order to simulate the high-fidelity video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy, a VATS lobectomy simulator to realistically and efficiently simulate the different surgical operations during the VATS lobectomy procedure is developed. Based on the Position-Based Dynamics framework, the deformation induced by tool-tissue and tissue-tissue interactions, soft tissue cuts as well as subsequent surgical suture operations is simulated. The Marching Cubes algorithm is employed to achieve the surface rendering, especially for the cutting process. The GPU parallel computing technique is …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A transmission line is the main commodity of power transmission network through which power is transmitted to the utility. These lines are often swayed by accidental breakdowns owing to different random origins. Hence, researchers try to detect and track down these failures at the earliest to avoid financial prejudice. This paper offers a new realtime mathematical morphology based approach for fault feature extraction. The morphological open-close-median filter is exploited to wrest unique fault features which are then fed as an input to support vector machine to detect and classify the short circuit faults. The acquired graphical and numerical results of …

Identification of relevant documents is performed to keep track of the state-of-the-art methods and relies on research paper recommender systems. The proposed approaches for these systems can be classified into categories like content-based, collaborative filtering-based, and bibliographic information-based approaches. The content-based approaches exploit the full text of articles and provide more promising results than other approaches. However, most content is not freely available because of subscription requirements. Therefore, the scope of content-based approaches is limited. In such scenarios, the best possible alternative could be the exploitation of other openly available resources. Therefore, this research explores the possible use of metadata …

Partial Discharge Detection And Localization On The Medium Voltage Xlpe Cableswith Multiclass Support Vector Machines, Fati̇h Serttaş, Fati̇h Onur Hocaoğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In medium voltage cables, partial discharges (PD?s) are the major problems that trigger electrical insulation failures. Therefore, classification of PD source type and failure localization in medium voltage cables are significant issues of medium voltage engineering. Therefore, in this study, both detection and localization of PD are studied. As a first step, 4 different kind of defects are artificially generated at the same length of the same kind of medium voltage cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables. Consequently, an experimental setup is built. During the experiments, different medium voltage levels are applied to the cables, then the PD signals are measured and …
Mutant Selection By Using Fourier Expansion, Savaş Takan, Tolga Ayav
Mutant Selection By Using Fourier Expansion, Savaş Takan, Tolga Ayav
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Mutation analysis is a widely used technique to evaluate the effectiveness of test cases in both hardware and software testing. The original model is mutated systematically under certain fault assumptions and test cases are checked against the mutants created to see whether the test cases can detect the faults or not. Mutation analysis is usually a computationally intensive task, particularly in finite state machine (FSM) testing due to a possibly huge amount of mutants. Random selection could be a practical reduction method under the assumption that each mutant is identical in terms of the probability of occurrence of its associating …

“Cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer that affects women worldwide. Assessment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) through histopathology remains as the standard for absolute determination of cancer. The examination of tissue samples under a microscope requires considerable time and effort from expert pathologists. There is a need to design an automated tool to assist pathologists for digitized histology slide analysis. Pre-cervical cancer is generally determined by examining the CIN which is the growth of atypical cells from the basement membrane (bottom) to the top of the epithelium. It has four grades, including: Normal, CIN1, CIN2, and CIN3. In …

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Worldwide, every day human beings generate millions of tons of Faecal Sludge (FS), which is rich in water, nutrients, energy, and organic compounds. Yet FS is not being managed in a way that permits us to derive value from its reuse, while at the same time, millions of farmers struggle with depleted soils and lack of water. In most of the developing countries, energy for cooking is mainly derived from cutting of trees, either as wood or charcoal. Resource recovery and reuse from FS can create livelihoods, enhance food security, support green economies, reduce waste and contribute to cost recovery …

In horseracing, “the going” is a term to describe the racetrack ground conditions. In Ireland presently, a groundskeeper or course clerk walks the racecourse poking it with a blackthorn stick, assesses conditions, and declares the going – it is a subjective measurement.
This thesis will propose using remote low-cost soil moisture sensors to gather high frequency data about the soil water content in the ground and to enable informed decisions to be made. This will remove the subjective element from the ground hardness, and look at the data in an objective way.
The soil moisture sensor will systematically collect high …

A Data-Driven Approach For Modeling Agents, Hamdi Kavak
A Data-Driven Approach For Modeling Agents, Hamdi Kavak
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Agents are commonly created on a set of simple rules driven by theories, hypotheses, and assumptions. Such modeling premise has limited use of real-world data and is challenged when modeling real-world systems due to the lack of empirical grounding. Simultaneously, the last decade has witnessed the production and availability of large-scale data from various sensors that carry behavioral signals. These data sources have the potential to change the way we create agent-based models; from simple rules to driven by data. Despite this opportunity, the literature has neglected to offer a modeling approach to generate granular agent behaviors from data, creating …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Educating people about vaccination tends to target vaccine acceptance and reduction of hesitancy. Social media provides a promising platform for studying public perception regarding vaccination. In this study, we harvested tweets over a year related to vaccines from February 2018 to January 2019. We present a two-stage classifier to: (1) classify the tweets as relevant or non-relevant and (2) categorize them in terms of pro-vaccination, anti-vaccination, or neutral outlook. We found that the classifier was able to distinguish clearly between anti-vaccination and pro-vaccination tweets, but also misclassified many of these as neutral. Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, we found that two …

Improving The Redundancy Of Knuth?S Balancing Scheme For Packet Transmissionsystems, Elie Ngomseu Mambou, Ebenezer Esenogho, Hendrik Ferreira
Improving The Redundancy Of Knuth?S Balancing Scheme For Packet Transmissionsystems, Elie Ngomseu Mambou, Ebenezer Esenogho, Hendrik Ferreira
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A simple scheme was proposed by Knuth to generate binary balanced code words from any information word. However, this method is limited in the sense that its redundancy is twice that of the full sets of balanced codes. The gap between Knuth?s algorithm?s redundancy and that of the full sets of balanced codes is significantly considerable. This paper attempts to reduce that gap. Furthermore, many constructions assume that a full balancing can be performed without showing the steps. A full balancing refers to the overall balancing of the encoded information together with the prefix. We propose an efficient way to …

The most critical challenge of web attack forensic investigations is the sheer amount of data and level of complexity. Machine learning technology might be an efficient solution for web attack analysis and investigation. Consequently, machine learning applications have been applied in various areas of information security and digital forensics, and have improved over time. Moreover, feature selection is a crucial step in machine learning; in fact, selecting an optimal feature subset could enhance the accuracy and performance of the predictive model. To date, there has not been an adequate approach to select optimal features for the evidence of web attack. …

Identifying Criminal Organizations From Their Social Network Structures, Muhammet Serkan Çi̇nar, Burkay Genç, Hayri̇ Sever
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Identification of criminal structures within very large social networks is an essential security feat. By identifying such structures, it may be possible to track, neutralize, and terminate the corresponding criminal organizations before they act. We evaluate the effectiveness of three different methods for classifying an unknown network as terrorist, cocaine, or noncriminal. We consider three methods for the identification of network types: evaluating common social network analysis metrics, modeling with a decision tree, and network motif frequency analysis. The empirical results show that these three methods can provide significant improvements in distinguishing all three network types. We show that these …

Prey-Predator Algorithm For Discrete Problems: A Case For Examination Timetabling Problem, Surafel Luleseged Tilahun
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The prey-predator algorithm is a metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the interaction between a predator and its prey. Initial solutions are put into three categories: the better performing solution as the best prey, the worst performing solution as a predator, and the rest as ordinary prey. The best prey totally focuses on exploiting its neighborhood while the predator explores the search space searching for a promising region in the search space. The ordinary prey will be affected by these two extreme search behaviors of exploration and exploitation. The algorithm has been tested and found to be effective in solving different problems …

This paper proposes an improved form of the ant lion optimization algorithm (IALO) to solve image clustering problem. The improvement of the algorithm was made using a new boundary decreasing procedure. Moreover, a recently proposed objective function for image clustering in the literature was also improved to obtain well-separated clusters while minimizing the intracluster distances. In order to accurately demonstrate the performances of the proposed methods, firstly, twenty-three benchmark functions were solved with IALO and the results were compared with the ALO and a chaos-based ALO algorithm from the literature. Secondly, four benchmark images were clustered by IALO and the …

Identifying Preferred Solutions In Multiobjective Combinatorial Optimization Problems, Banu Lokman, Mustafa Murat Köksalan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
We develop an evolutionary algorithm for multiobjective combinatorial optimization problems. The algorithm aims at converging the preferred solutions of a decision-maker. We test the performance of the algorithm on the multiobjective knapsack and multiobjective spanning tree problems. We generate the true nondominated solutions using an exact algorithm and compare the results with those of the evolutionary algorithm. We observe that the evolutionary algorithm works well in approximating the solutions in the preferred regions.

A Distributed Measurement Architecture For Inferring Tcp Round-Trip Times Through Passive Measurements, Fatih Abut
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The round-trip time (RTT), defined as the time elapsed for transmission of a data packet to travel from one endpoint to the other and back again, is an important parameter for Internet quality. This paper proposes an extended version of the well-known SYN/ACK (SA) methodology for passively measuring the RTTs over Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connections. Differently from the original version of the SA methodology and the rest of studies in the related literature, the proposed passive methodology measures not only the total RTT of an end-to-end connection but also the proportion of the existing connection sections on this entire …

Optimal Siting, Sizing, And Parameter Tuning Of Statcom And Sssc Using Mpso And Remote Coordination Of The Facts For Oscillation Damping Of Power Systems, James Garba Ambafi, Sunusi Sani Adamu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In electromechanical oscillation damping within power system, power system stabilizers (PSSs) are often deployed. However, a PSS is less effective in damping interarea oscillation and is limited by changes in network configuration due to weak tie-lines and load variations. Consequently, this paper presents a wide-area coordination approach that damps interarea oscillations using FACTS devices and phasor measurement units. We selected a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and static series synchronous compensator (SSSC) for realistic power system interarea oscillation damping. The performance of the coordinated FACTS installed in a power system depends on their suitable locations, sizes, tuned parameters, and remote input …
