A Systolic Parsing Algorithm For A Visual Programming Language, Adam W. Bojanczyk, Takayuki Dan Kimura
A Systolic Parsing Algorithm For A Visual Programming Language, Adam W. Bojanczyk, Takayuki Dan Kimura
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
In this paper we consider a problem of parsing a two-dimensional visual programming language Show and Tell on a two-dimensional array of processors. A program in Show and Tell is a bit-mapped, two-dimensional pattern satisfying a certain set of grammatical rules. The pattern consists of partially ordered set of rectilinear boxes and arrows distributed over the space of nxn pixel area. The corresponding directed graph, the box graph, where boxes are nodes and arrows are directed edges, may not have a cycle in a Show and Tell program. The cycle detection is the most computationally intensive stage of the parsing …

Moderating Online Conferences, Revised Manuscript, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Elaine B. Kerr
Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports
While considerable lore has accumulated about effective leadership techniques for groups interacting electronically, until now it has not been systematically presented. This material is culled from the experiences of those who have moderated past online conferences, the knowledge common to the EIES User Consultants, and observed behavior from thousands of conferences convened on EIES in the past. While this is a system-specific guide, the general principles ought to be generalizable to other systems, with different structures for group discussion.

A Task Manager For A Multiprocessor Computer System, Peter J. Ingraham
A Task Manager For A Multiprocessor Computer System, Peter J. Ingraham
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The advent of the 32-bit microprocessor has sparked the manufacture of a number of 32-bit single-board computers (SBCs). These SBCs rival [performance of minicomputers for a fraction of the cost, and a number of them conform to standard 32-bit bus structures. A 32-bit multiprocessor computer system can be created by connecting two or more SBCs on a 32-bit bus. This computer system has the potential of providing many times the power as a single-processor computer system as well as a significant reduction in cost.
The Multiprocessor Task Manager is designed to efficiently distribute software tasks, schedule their execution, and manage …

Editor Design In The Context Of Control System Simulation, Leon Fadden
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Advances in microcomputer display devices and support software during the past decade have made the microcomputer an increasingly popular vehicle for technical education. This is especially apparent in the area of simulation. The pedagog can provide the student of control theory not merely with the block diagrams and differential algebra but with high resolution color graphic animations supported by mathematical models whose parameters are easily changed by some editor facility. This mode of control system design and behavior study is both faster and more enjoyable for the student, providing greater continuity, concentration, and learning efficiency.
This paper describes the simulation …

An Exact Analysis For Efficient Computation Of Random-Pattern Testability In Combinational Circuits, Sharad C. Seth, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Vishwani Agrawal
An Exact Analysis For Efficient Computation Of Random-Pattern Testability In Combinational Circuits, Sharad C. Seth, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Vishwani Agrawal
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Experimental evidence shows that low testability in a typical circuit is much more likely due to poor observability than poor controllability. Thus, from theoretical and practical standpoints, it is important to develop an accurate model for observability computation. One such model, in terms of supergates, is proposed in the first part of this paper thus complimenting our earlier work. It is now possible to obtain exact random-pattern testability for each line in a circuit.
The second part of the paper analyzes the supegate structure of a circuit from a graph theoretic viewpoint. Finding a supergate is related to determining the …

A Study Of The Dynamic Control Of The Inverted Pendulum System, Koon T. Ang
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report describes the simulation of an inverted pendulum control system. The purpose is to provide an interesting learning process through high resolution color graphics animations in the control of dynamic systems. The software uses the graphic capabilities extensively to make it very user-friendly and highly interactive. A numerical analysis method is used to solve the systems of equations. The animation driven by the results is then displayed on the video terminal. Facilities range from selection of controllers, changing of system parameters, plotting graphs, and hardcopy outputs.
Root Locus Plotter For A Dual Tank System Under Feedback Control, John M. Decatrel
Root Locus Plotter For A Dual Tank System Under Feedback Control, John M. Decatrel
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A root locus graphics routine was written in Turbo Pascal for the analysis and design of a linearized dual tank control system. The routine is a subprogram to be incorporated with an editor written by L. Fadden. This editor allows for the saving and changing of parameters to the system.
The dual tank system is a good example for classical feedback control analysis. A brief description of the process and system is presented. The system may be described by linearized differential and algebraic equations. From these, a characteristic equation is derived, which gives rise to the root locus. The root …
Control Of A Nonlinear System By Linearization, Drew D. Nelson
Control Of A Nonlinear System By Linearization, Drew D. Nelson
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
In today’s linear control systems, exact solutions can be obtained by the use of Laplace Transforms in the frequency domain. In dealing with nonlinear systems, exact solutions are not always achievable. For this reason, it is necessary to linearize the system and then apply frequency response methods.
This paper shows the comparison of a nonlinear system with the linearized model of the same system. For both proportional and proportional-integral control, the response to a unit step change in the set point showed minimal difference between the linearized and nonlinear system.
Lsim User Manual, Roger D. Chamberlain
Lsim User Manual, Roger D. Chamberlain
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Lsim is a gate/switch level digital logic similar. It enables users to model digital circuits both at the gate and switch level and incorporates features that support investigation of the simulation task itself. This user's manual describes the procedures used to specify a circuit to lsim and control the simulation of the circuit (i.e., specifying inputs vectors, running the simulation, and monitoring output signals).
Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee
Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Using SPICE experiments, it has been possible to verify most of the important aspects of electronic holography. The generation and properties of dynamic echoes under different types of nonlinearities have been extensively tested, and some new information has been garnered in the process. The case of pulse and generalized memory echoes has also been tested, and the results have been fairly satisfactory. Most of all, the simplicity with which the intriguing concept of memory echoes has translated into the circuit implementation on SPICE, and the closeness of the results to predicted behavior have been somewhat of a pleasant surprise.

Integrating Working At Home With Information Systems Management, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Joseph C. Schuh
Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports
The history of computerization has its origin in the automation of manual processes - searching out the segments that could be put on a computer. The intended result was that the entire job would be done faster and cheaper. Thus, current computer-based information systems tend to make more efficient use of computers than people. The management function, on the other hand, often seems to focus on competitive skills and salesmanship rather than on the ability to attract and hold talented people. But, such impersonal factors that have driven management practices are changing. There has been a complete reversal in the …

Statistics On Logic Simulation, K. F. Wong, Mark A. Franklin, Roger D. Chamberlain, B. L. Shing
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The high costs associated with logic simulation of large VLSI based systems have led to the need for new computer architectures tailored to the simulation task. Such architecture have the potential for significant speedups over standard software based logic simulators. Several commercial simulation engines have been produced to satisfy need in this area. To properly explore the space of alternative simulation architectures, data is required on the simulation process itself. This paper presents a framework for such data gathering activity by first examining possible sources of speedup in the logic simulation task, examining the sort of data needed in the …
An Investigation To Improve Linear Predictive Vocoder Pulse/Noise Excitation Models, Elizabeth Annella Martina Effer
An Investigation To Improve Linear Predictive Vocoder Pulse/Noise Excitation Models, Elizabeth Annella Martina Effer
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The quality of synthetic speech from Linear Predictive (LP) vocoders is known to be degraded due to the lack of detail in the commonly used pulse/noise excitation model. In this investigation, it was hypothesized that this degradation is due to the lack of precise timing information in the pulses and to the constraint that each short-time segment of excitation be either an impulse train or white noise. Accordingly, more complex excitation models were implemented using precise timing from peaks in the residual and a mixture of pulses and noise. Since the LP residual is known to be the perfect excitation …
Design Of A Modulation System Simulator, Vincent Carl Dale
Design Of A Modulation System Simulator, Vincent Carl Dale
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The development of a Modulation System Simulator is described. The Modulation System Simulator is used to investigate the performance, in the presence of noise, of various analog and digital modulation systems. The methods of modulation studied using this simulator are amplitude modulation, frequency modulation, pulse amplitude modulation, pulse code modulation, amplitude shift keying modulation, and frequency shift keying modulation. For each of these modulation systems a mathematical model is devised and then analyzed to predict the performance of each modulation system in the presence of noise. The results of this theoretical analysis are then compared with the experimental results obtained …
Randomized Routing On Fat-Trees, Ronald I. Greenberg
Randomized Routing On Fat-Trees, Ronald I. Greenberg
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Fat-trees are a class of routing networks for hardware-efficient parallel computation. This paper presents a randomized algorithm for routing messages on a fat-tree. The quality of the algorithm is measured in terms of the load factor of a set of messages to be routed, which is a lower bound on the time required to deliver the messages. We show that if a set of messages has load factor lambda on a fat-tree with n processors, the number of delivery cycles (routing attempts) that the algorithm requires is O(lambda+lgnlglgn) with probability 1-O(1/ …

Determinants Of Acceptance Of Computer Mediated Communication System, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Starr Roxanne Hiltz, Elaine B. Kerr, Kenneth Johnson, Murray Turoff
Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports
Acceptance of Computer-Mediated communication Systems (CMCS) by managers and professionals corresponds to its incorporation into their daily patterns of communication and work. Acceptance includes at least three inter-related dimensions: amount of use, subjective satisfaction with the process of using the system, and a perception that system use has positive impacts upon productivity.
Pre-use and follow-up questionnaires were distributed to 150- 250 new users of four different CMCS. Three are conferencing systems, designed to support "group work." They differ in terms of comprehensiveness or complexity of design, and size and nature of the user communities; COM/KOM, a Swedish system with mostly …
