Kolmogorov Complexity: How A Paradigm Motivated By Foundations Of Physics Can Be Applied In Robust Control, Vladik Kreinovich, Issak A. Kunin Mar 2003

Kolmogorov Complexity: How A Paradigm Motivated By Foundations Of Physics Can Be Applied In Robust Control, Vladik Kreinovich, Issak A. Kunin

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Born about three decades ago, Kolmogorov Complexity Theory (KC) led to important discoveries that, in particular, give a new understanding of the fundamental problem: interrelations between classical continuum mathematics and reality (physics, biology, engineering sciences, ...). Crudely speaking, it enables us to better distinguish between mathematical possible (possible abnormal) and physically possible situations.

We show that this formalization is not only in good accordance with theoretical physics, but it can also be applied to robust control: instead of requiring that the control work for all mathematically possible situations, we only require that the control works for all "non-abnormal" situations.

Performance Analysis Of Protocol Independent Multicasting-Dense Mode In Low Earth Orbit Satellite Networks, Mark D. Saeger Mar 2003

Performance Analysis Of Protocol Independent Multicasting-Dense Mode In Low Earth Orbit Satellite Networks, Mark D. Saeger

Theses and Dissertations

This research explored the implementation of Protocol Independent Multicasting - Dense Mode (PIM-DM) in a LEO satellite constellation. PIM-DM is a terrestrial protocol for distributing traffic efficiently between subscriber nodes by combining data streams into a tree-based structure, spreading from the root of the tree to the branches. Using this structure, a minimum number of connections are required to transfer data, decreasing the load on intermediate satellite routers. The PIM-DM protocol was developed for terrestrial systems and this research implemented an adaptation of this protocol in a satellite system. This research examined the PIM-DM performance characteristics which were compared to …

Primary Link- 16 functions include exchange of friendly unit position and status data, fl%the dissemination of tactical surveillance track data, and the control/management of air, surface, and subsurface engagements. Because Link- 16 will play an integral role in fl% network-centric Joint Battlespace Infosphere (JBI), the performance of Internet Protocol version six (IPv6) and IP Security (IPSec) over Link-16 needs to be determined. Using OPNET modeling software to simulate a Link- 16 network, the investigation of this research revealed that the …

Characterizing Data Streams Over Ieee 802.11b Ad-Hoc Wireless Networks, John T. Wagnon Mar 2003

Characterizing Data Streams Over Ieee 802.11b Ad-Hoc Wireless Networks, John T. Wagnon

Theses and Dissertations

Soon, advancements in data encryption technology will make real-time decryption of the contents of network packets virtually impossible. This research anticipates this development and extracts useful information based on packet level characteristics. Distinguishing characteristics from e-mail, HTTP, print, and FTP applications are identified and analyzed. The analysis of collected data from an ad-hoc wireless network reveals that distinguishing characteristics of network traffic do indeed exist. These characteristics include packet size, packet frequency, inter-packet correlation, and channel utilization. Without knowing the contents of packets or the direction of the traffic flow, the applications accessing the wireless network can be determined.

Investigation Of Doppler Effects On The Detection Of Polyphase Coded Radar Waveforms, Geoffrey G. Bowman Mar 2003

Investigation Of Doppler Effects On The Detection Of Polyphase Coded Radar Waveforms, Geoffrey G. Bowman

Theses and Dissertations

Special operations missions often depend on discrete insertion of highly trained soldiers into dangerous territory. To reduce the risk involved in this type of engagement, Low Probability of Detection radar waveforms have been designed specifically to defeat enemy passive radar detectors. These waveforms have been shown to perform well when the Doppler shift is minimal, but their performance degrades dramatically with increased frequency shifts due to Doppler effects. This research compares one known Low Probability of Detection waveform, based on Welti coding, with a radar waveform known to provide Doppler constancy, namely, one based on Frank coding. These waveforms are …

Wlan Csma/Ca Performance In A Bluetooth Interference Environment, Randall B. Noel Mar 2003

Wlan Csma/Ca Performance In A Bluetooth Interference Environment, Randall B. Noel

Theses and Dissertations

IEEE 802.11 WLANs and Bluetooth piconets both operate in the 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) radio band. When operating in close proximity, these two technologies interfere with each other. Current literature suggests that IEEE 802.11 (employing direct sequence spread spectrum technology) is more susceptible to this interference than Bluetooth, which uses frequency hopping spread spectrum technology, resulting in reduced throughput. Current research tends to focus on the issue of packet collisions, and not the fact that IEEE 802.11 may also delay its transmissions while the radio channel is occupied by a Bluetooth signal. This research characterizes previously neglected …

A New Temporal Pattern Identification Method For Characterization And Prediction Of Complex Time Series Events, Richard J. Povinelli, Xin Feng Mar 2003

A New Temporal Pattern Identification Method For Characterization And Prediction Of Complex Time Series Events, Richard J. Povinelli, Xin Feng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A new method for analyzing time series data is introduced in this paper. Inspired by data mining, the new method employs time-delayed embedding and identifies temporal patterns in the resulting phase spaces. An optimization method is applied to search the phase spaces for optimal heterogeneous temporal pattern clusters that reveal hidden temporal patterns, which are characteristic and predictive of time series events. The fundamental concepts and framework of the method are explained in detail. The method is then applied to the characterization and prediction, with a high degree of accuracy, of the release of metal droplets from a welder. The …

Towards A Performance Model For Special Purpose Orb Middleware, Venkita Subramonian, Guoliang Xing, Christopher Gill, Ron Cytron Feb 2003

Towards A Performance Model For Special Purpose Orb Middleware, Venkita Subramonian, Guoliang Xing, Christopher Gill, Ron Cytron

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

General purpose middleware has been shown effective in meeting diverse functional requirements for a wide range of distributed systems. Advanced middleware projects have also supported single quality-of-service dimensions such as real-time, fault tolerance, or small memory foot-print. However, there is limited experience supporting multiple quality-of-service dimensions in middleware to meet the needs of special purpose applications. Even though general purpose middleware can cover an entire spectrum of functionality by supporting the union of all features required by each application, this approach breaks down for distributed real-time and embedded sys-tems. For example, the breadth of features supported may interfere with small …

Twinscan: A Software Package For Homology-Based Gene Prediction, Paul Flicek Feb 2003

Twinscan: A Software Package For Homology-Based Gene Prediction, Paul Flicek

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

A complete mapping from genome to proteome would constitute a foundation for genome-based biology and provide targets for pharmaceutical and therapeutic intervention. This is one reason gene structure prediction has been a major subfield of computational biology for over 20 years. Many of the widely used gene prediction systems were developed in the 1990s and are unable to take advantage of the revolution in comparative genomics brought on by the sequencing of the entire genomes of an increasing numbers of vertebrates. Twinscan is a new system for high-throughput gene-structure prediction that exploits the patterns of conservation observed in alignments between …

Statistical And Dempster-Shafer Techniques In Testing Structural Integrity Of Aerospace Structures, Roberto A. Osegueda, Seetharami R. Seelam, Bharat Mulupuru, Vladik Kreinovich Feb 2003

Statistical And Dempster-Shafer Techniques In Testing Structural Integrity Of Aerospace Structures, Roberto A. Osegueda, Seetharami R. Seelam, Bharat Mulupuru, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Several techniques are known for non-destructive testing of aerospace structures, such as pulse echo, Eddy current, magnetic resonance, etc. Each of these techniques detects some faults but misses others, so it is desirable to combine (fuse) the results of these techniques. Several methods of data fusion are known. To improve the quality of fault detection, we modified the straightforward statistical method as follows: (1) we computed mean and variance iteratively: detected faults are excluded form the computation on the next iteration; (2) we treated the plate's edge and the inside separately; (3) we dismissed measurements in which only one technique …

A New Cauchy-Based Black-Box Technique For Uncertainty In Risk Analysis, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson Feb 2003

A New Cauchy-Based Black-Box Technique For Uncertainty In Risk Analysis, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Uncertainty is very important in risk analysis. A natural way to describe this uncertainty is to describe a set of possible values of each unknown quantity (this set is usually an interval), plus any additional information that we may have about the probability of different values within this set. Traditional statistical techniques deal with the situations in which we have a complete information about the probabilities; in real life, however, we often have only partial information about them. We therefore need to describe methods of handling such partial information in risk analysis. Several such techniques have been presented, often on …

Detection Of Cracks At Rivet Holes In Thin Plates Using Lamb-Wave Scanning, Roberto A. Osegueda, Vladik Kreinovich, Soheil Nazarian, Enrique Roldan Feb 2003

Detection Of Cracks At Rivet Holes In Thin Plates Using Lamb-Wave Scanning, Roberto A. Osegueda, Vladik Kreinovich, Soheil Nazarian, Enrique Roldan

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

This paper describes a Lamb-wave scanning method for the detection of notches simulating cracks at rivet holes in thin plates. The approach requires the generation of an ultrasonic So-Mode Lamb wave using an incident transmitter excited with a tone burst centered at a near non-dispersive frequency. Area scans are performed of a plate with a hole with a notch to generate times series information which is used to create animations illustrating the wave propagation characteristics. The time series are subject to a sifting process to obtain intrinsic mode functions which contain narrow frequency banded information of the signals. The Hilbert-Huang …

Storage Allocation In Bounded Time, Sharath Reddy Cholleti Jan 2003

Storage Allocation In Bounded Time, Sharath Reddy Cholleti

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The correctness of a real-time system is very much dependent on the time at which a specific task is completed. Hence, satisfying a storage allocation request within bounded time is important. Fragmentation of the heap after repeated allocations and deallocations is a major issue for real-time systems, as most allocators depend on garbage collection for defragmentation of the heap, which might not finish in time to honor deadlines. We present the storage requirement for a defragmentation-free binary-buddy allocator. We also study a localized defragmentation algorithm to satisfy a single allocation request, within bounded time, instead of requiring defragmentation of the …

Evaluation Of Intrusion Detection Systems With Automatic Traffic Generation Programs, Friday Bassey Akpan Jan 2003

Evaluation Of Intrusion Detection Systems With Automatic Traffic Generation Programs, Friday Bassey Akpan

Theses

In this master's thesis work, a program was developed using the Perl programming language to enable user defined attack programs to run automatically. A similar program was also developed for background traffic. With this program, the different features of the Nmap exploration and scanning tool were exploited to build scenarios of attacks.

Automated scenarios of attacks running in to the order of hundreds were developed. Also, different sets of automated stealthy attacks scenarios running in to the order of hundreds were developed using the timing modes, stealthy scans and scan delay features of Nmap.

These automated attacks scenarios were employed …

Complexity Of Single-Agent And Equilibrium-Based Multiagent Planning And Plan Checking: Approach When We Have A List Of Valid States, Chitta Baral, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2003

Complexity Of Single-Agent And Equilibrium-Based Multiagent Planning And Plan Checking: Approach When We Have A List Of Valid States, Chitta Baral, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In a recent paper M. Bowling, R. Jensen, and M. Veloso proposed a new formalization of the problem of multiagent planning - a formalization that is based on the (intuitively natural) notion of an equilibrium. In this paper we analyze the computational complexity of the corresponding equilibrium-based multiagent planning and plan checking. Within the traditional approach in which states are described by fluents, the computational complexity of planning under incompleteness is PSPACE-hard already for a single agent; therefore, to make a meaningful comparison between the complexity of single-agent and multi-agent planning, we analyze complexity in a different approach, in which …

Managing Content-Initiated Application Delivery With A Client-Side Agent, Niall Roche, Gary Clynch Jan 2003

Managing Content-Initiated Application Delivery With A Client-Side Agent, Niall Roche, Gary Clynch

Conference Papers

Mobile devices have evolved with improvements in processing power and support for various application environments such as MExE [1]. Currently a large number of devices and platforms exist, each with various attributes. Such diversity results in problems providing appropriate applications to these devices. This paper outlines need for an integrated approach to application delivery for mobile devices. The solution allows suitable applications to be delivered to devices. Application management is removed from non-technical mobile device users through the presence of a client-side agent to manage the complexity of application provisioning, device resource management and application management.

Common Data Administration, Data Management, And Data Alignment As A Necessary Requirement For Coupling C4isr Systems And M&S Systems, Andreas Tolk

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Within the application domain of military simulation systems, training and exercises as well as support to real operations require the coupling of the simulation system delivering the needed functionality with the Command, Control, Computing, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) system providing the necessary data. The solution to this challenge is to build appropriate interfaces. Although in long term a more integrated approach will be necessary, in short and mid term, gateways and interfaces are likely to remain the standard. However, in order to succeed with the respective efforts, at least on the data level of interoperability, a common solution …

Towards Foundations Of Processing Imprecise Data: From Traditional Statistical Techniques Of Processing Crisp Data To Statistical Processing Of Fuzzy Data, Hung T. Nguyen, Tonghui Wang, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In traditional statistics, we process crisp data - usually, results of measurements and/or observations. Not all the knowledge comes from measurements and observations. In many real-life situations, in addition to the results of measurements and observations, we have expert estimates, estimates that are often formulated in terms of natural language, like "x is large". Before we analyze how to process these statements, we must be able to translate them in a language that a computer can understand. This translation of expert statements from natural language into a precise language of numbers is one of the main original objectives of fuzzy …
