Feature Detection Using Curvature Maps And The Min-Cut/Max-Flow Graph Cut Algorithm, Timothy Gatzke, Cindy Grimm Jan 2006

Feature Detection Using Curvature Maps And The Min-Cut/Max-Flow Graph Cut Algorithm, Timothy Gatzke, Cindy Grimm

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Automatic detection of features in three-dimensional objects is a critical part of shape matching tasks such as object registration and recognition. Previous approaches to local surface matching have either focused on man-made objects, where features are generally well-defined, or required some type of user interaction to select features. Manual selection of corresponding features and subjective determination of the difference between objects are time consuming processes requiring a high level of expertise. Curvature is a useful property of a surface, but curvature calculation on a discrete mesh is often noisy and not always accurate. However, the em Curvature Map, which represents …

The Remote-Clique Problem Revisited, Benjamin E. Birnbaum Jan 2006

The Remote-Clique Problem Revisited, Benjamin E. Birnbaum

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Given a positive integer k and a complete graph with non-negative edge weights that satisfy the triangle inequality, the remote-clique problem is to find a subset of k vertices having a maximum-weight induced subgraph. A greedy algorithm for the problem has been shown to have an approximation ratio of 4, but this analysis was not shown to be tight. In this thesis, we present an algorithm called d-Greedy Augment that generalizes this greedy algorithm (they are equivalent when d = 1). We use the technique of factor-revealing linear programs to prove that d-Greedy Augment, which has a running time of …

Smooth Key-Framing Using The Image Plane, Leon Barrett, Cindy Grimm Jan 2006

Smooth Key-Framing Using The Image Plane, Leon Barrett, Cindy Grimm

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper demonstrates the use of image-space constraints for key frame interpolation. Interpolating in image-space results in sequences with predictable and controlable image trajectories and projected size for selected objects, particularly in cases where the desired center of rotation is not fixed or when the key frames contain perspective distortion changes. Additionally, we provide the user with direct image-space control over {\em how} the key frames are interpolated by allowing them to directly edit the object's projected size and trajectory. Image-space key frame interpolation requires solving the inverse camera problem over a sequence of point constraints. This is a variation …

Discovering Functional Modules By Clustering Gene Co-Expression Networks, Jianhua Ruan, Weixiong Zhang Jan 2006

Discovering Functional Modules By Clustering Gene Co-Expression Networks, Jianhua Ruan, Weixiong Zhang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Identification of groups of functionally related genes from high throughput gene expression data is an important step towards elucidating gene functions at a global scale. Most existing approaches treat gene expression data as points in a metric space, and apply conventional clustering algorithms to identify sets of genes that are close to each other in the metric space. However, they usually ignore the topology of the underlying biological networks. In this paper, we propose a network-based clustering method that is biologically more realistic. Given a gene expression data set, we apply a rank-based transformation to obtain a sparse co-expression network, …

Hail: An Algorithm For The Hardware Accelerated Identification Of Languages, Master's Thesis, May 2006, Charles M. Kastner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This thesis examines in detail the Hardware-Accelerated Identification of Languages (HAIL) project. The goal of HAIL is to provide an accurate means to identify the language and encoding used in streaming content, such as documents passed over a high-speed network. HAIL has been implemented on the Field-programmable Port eXtender (FPX), an open hardware platform developed at Washington University in St. Louis. HAIL can accurately identify the primary languages and encodings used in text at rates much higher than what can be achieved by software algorithms running on microprocessors.

A Query-Centric Approach To Supporting The Development Of Context-Aware Applications For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Doctoral Dissertation, August 2006, Jamie Payton Jan 2006

A Query-Centric Approach To Supporting The Development Of Context-Aware Applications For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Doctoral Dissertation, August 2006, Jamie Payton

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The wide-spread use of mobile computing devices has led to an increased demand for applications that operate dependably in opportunistically formed networks. A promising approach to supporting software development for such dynamic settings is to rely on the context-aware computing paradigm, in which an application views the state of the surrounding ad hoc network as a valuable source of contextual information that can be used to adapt its behavior. Collecting context information distributed across a constantly changing network remains a significant technical challenge. This dissertation presents a query-centered approach to simplifying context interactions in mobile ad hoc networks. Using such …

Design Issues Of Reserved Delivery Subnetworks, Doctoral Dissertation, May 2006, Ruibiao Qiu Jan 2006

Design Issues Of Reserved Delivery Subnetworks, Doctoral Dissertation, May 2006, Ruibiao Qiu

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The lack of per-flow bandwidth reservation in today's Internet limits the quality of service that an information service provider can provide. This dissertation introduces the reserved delivery subnetwork (RDS), a mechanism that provides consistent quality of service by implementing aggregate bandwidth reservation. A number of design and deployment issues of RDSs are studied. First, the configuration problem of a single-server RDS is formulated as a minimum concave cost network flow problem, which properly reflects the economy of bandwidth aggregation, but is also an NP-hard problem. To make the RDS configuration problem tractable, an efficient approximation heuristic, largest demands first (LDF), …

Mixed-Integer Linear Programming Solution To Multi-Robot Task Allocation Problem, Nuzhet Atay, Burchan Bayazit Jan 2006

Mixed-Integer Linear Programming Solution To Multi-Robot Task Allocation Problem, Nuzhet Atay, Burchan Bayazit

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Multi-robot systems require efficient and accurate planning in order to perform mission-critical tasks. This paper introduces a mixed-integer linear programming solution to coordinate multiple heterogenenous robots for detecting and controlling multiple regions of interest in an unknown environment. The objective function contains four basic requirements of a multi-robot system serving this purpose: control regions of interest, provide communication between robots, control maximum area and detect regions of interest. Our solution defines optimum locations of robots in order to maximize the objective function while efficiently satisfying some constraints such as avoiding obstacles and staying within the speed capabilities of the robots. …

Competent Program Evolution, Doctoral Dissertation, December 2006, Moshe Looks Jan 2006

Competent Program Evolution, Doctoral Dissertation, December 2006, Moshe Looks

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Heuristic optimization methods are adaptive when they sample problem solutions based on knowledge of the search space gathered from past sampling. Recently, competent evolutionary optimization methods have been developed that adapt via probabilistic modeling of the search space. However, their effectiveness requires the existence of a compact problem decomposition in terms of prespecified solution parameters. How can we use these techniques to effectively and reliably solve program learning problems, given that program spaces will rarely have compact decompositions? One method is to manually build a problem-specific representation that is more tractable than the general space. But can this process be …

Computer Science Faculty Publications

FeDCOR (Federation of DSpace using CORDRA) is a registry-based federation system for DSpace instances. It is based on the CORDRA model. The first article in this issue of D-Lib Magazine describes the Advanced Distributed Learning-Registry (ADL-R) [1], which is the first operational CORDRA registry, and also includes an introduction to CORDRA. That introduction, or other prior knowledge of the CORDRA effort, is recommended for the best understanding of this article, which builds on that base to describe in detail the FeDCOR approach.

Addressing Cheating And Workload Characterization In Online Games, Christopher Chambers Jan 2006

Addressing Cheating And Workload Characterization In Online Games, Christopher Chambers

Dissertations and Theses

The Internet has enabled the popular pastime of playing video games to grow rapidly by connecting game players in disparate locations. However, with popularity have come the two challenges of hosting a large number of users and detecting cheating among users. For reasons of control, security, and ease of development, the most popular system for hosting on-line games is the client server architecture. This is also the most expensive and least scalable architecture for the game publisher, which drives hosting costs upwards with the success of the game. In addition to the expense of hosting, as a particular game grows …

The Formal Laplace-Borel Transform Of Fliess Operators And The Composition Product, Yaqin Li, W. Steven Gray Jan 2006

The Formal Laplace-Borel Transform Of Fliess Operators And The Composition Product, Yaqin Li, W. Steven Gray

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The formal Laplace-Borel transform of an analytic integral operator, known as a Fliess operator, is defined and developed. Then, in conjunction with the composition product over formal power series, the formal Laplace-Borel transform is shown to provide an isomorphism between the semigroup of all Fliess operators under operator composition and the semigroup of all locally convergent formal power series under the composition product. Finally, the formal Laplace-Borel transform is applied in a systems theory setting to explicitly derive the relationship between the formal Laplace transform of the input and output functions of a Fliess operator. This gives a compact interpretation …

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Interoperability across Modeling and Simulation (M&S) and Command and Control (C2) systems continues to be a significant problem for today's warfighters. M&S is well-established in military training, but it can be a valuable asset for planning and mission rehearsal if M&S and C2 systems were able to exchange information, plans, and orders more effectively. To better support the warfighter with M&S based capabilities, an open standards-based framework is needed that establishes operational and technical coherence between C2 and M&S systems.

Monte-Carlo-Type Techniques For Processing Interval Uncertainty, And Their Potential Engineering Applications, Vladik Kreinovich, J. Beck, Carlos M. Ferregut, A. Sanchez, George R. Keller, Matthew G. Averill, Scott A. Starks

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In engineering applications, we need to make decisions under uncertainty. Traditionally, in engineering, statistical methods are used, methods assuming that we know the probability distribution of different uncertain parameters. Usually, we can safely linearize the dependence of the desired quantities y (e.g., stress at different structural points) on the uncertain parameters xi - thus enabling sensitivity analysis. Often, the number n of uncertain parameters is huge, so sensitivity analysis leads to a lot of computation time. To speed up the processing, we propose to use special Monte-Carlo-type simulations.

Loss Aware Rate Allocations In H.263 Coded Video Transmissions, Xiao Su, Benjamin Wah Dec 2005

Loss Aware Rate Allocations In H.263 Coded Video Transmissions, Xiao Su, Benjamin Wah

Faculty Publications

For packet video, information loss and bandwidth limitation are two factors that affect video playback quality. Traditional rate allocation approaches have focused on optimizing video quality under bandwidth constraint alone. However, in the best-effort Internet, packets carrying video data are susceptible to losses, which need to be reconstructed at the receiver side. In this paper, we propose loss aware rate allocations in both group-of-block (GOB) level and macroblock level, given that certain packets are lost during transmissions and reconstructed using simple interpolation methods at the receiver side. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithms can produce videos of higher quality …

Architecture And Execution Model For A Survivable Workflow Transaction Infrastructure, Haraldur D. Thorvaldsson, Kenneth J. Goldman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We present a novel architecture and execution model for an infrastructure supporting fault-tolerant, long-running distributed applications spanning multiple administrative domains. Components for both transaction processing and persistent state are replicated across multiple servers, en-suring that applications continue to function correctly de-spite arbitrary (Byzantine) failure of a bounded number of servers. We give a formal model of application execution, based on atomic execution steps, linearizability and a sep-aration between data objects and transactions that act on them. The architecture is designed for robust interoperability across domains, in an open and shared Internet computing infrastructure. A notable feature supporting cross-domain applications is …

However, the limited bandwidth of the satellite channel, satellite rotation around the Earth and mobility of end-users makes QoS provisioning and mobility management …

Robust And Efficient Localization Techniques For Cellular And Wireless Sensor Networks, Haseebulla M. Khan Dec 2005

Robust And Efficient Localization Techniques For Cellular And Wireless Sensor Networks, Haseebulla M. Khan

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Localization in wireless networks refers to a collection of tasks that, collectively, determines the location of a mobile user, striving to hide the effects of mobility from the user and/or application. Localization has become an important issue and has drawn considerable attention, as many applications including E-911, cargo tracking, locating patients, location-sensitive billing, etc., require knowledge of the location of user/objects. It was realized, quite a while back, that extending emergency 911-like services (E-911) to continually growing mobile population is one of the extremely important localization applications. The bulk of the proposed solutions to emergency location management in wireless environments …

Roadmap Query For Sensor Network Assisted Navigation In Dynamic Environments, Sangeeta Bhattacharya, Nuzhet Atay, Gazihan Alankus, Chenyang Lu, O. Burchan Bayazit, Gruia-Catalin Roman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Autonomous mobile entity navigation through dynamic and unknown environments is an essential part of many mission critical applications like search and rescue and fire fighting. The dynamism of the environment necessitates the mobile entity to constantly maintain a high degree of awareness of the changing environment. This criteria makes it difficult to achieve good navigation performance by using just on-board sensors and existing navigation methods and motivates the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to aid navigation. In this paper, we present a novel approach that integrates a roadmap based navigation algorithm with a novel network query protocol called Roadmap …

Group Scheduling In Selinux To Mitigate Cpu-Focused Denial Of Service Attacks, Armando Migliaccio, Terry Tidwell, Christopher Gill, Tejasvi Aswathanarayana, Douglas Niehaus

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Popular security techniques such as public-private key encryption, firewalls, and role-based access control offer significant protec-tion of system data, but offer only limited protection of the computations using that data from significant interference due to accident or adversarial attack. However, in an increasing number of modern systems, ensuring the reliable execution of system activities is every bit as important as ensuring data security. This paper makes three contributions to the state of the art in protection of the execution of system activities from accidental or adversarial interference. First, we consider the motivating problem of CPU-focused denial of service attacks, and …
