A Study Of Hardware Efficient Recombination Variants In A Mini Population Genetic Algorithm, Shiva Satya Ramesh Varma Bhupathiraju Venkata

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Evolvable Hardware is an emerging sub-field of evolutionary computation in which evolutionary algorithms are employed to create designs for hardware devices. Recent work has combined continuous time recurrent neural networks with the Mini Population (Minipop) Evolutionary Algorithm to create self-configuring device controllers. Standard Minipop eschews recombination operators due to the belief that they increase the size of an algorithm's on chip implementation without adding significant search power for finding neural network controllers. The focus of this thesis is to challenge that thinking by testing a number of hardware efficient recombination operators against two benchmark problems. We consider variants that recombine …

Secure computing is gaining importance in recent times as computing capability is increasingly becoming distributed and information is everywhere. Prevention of piracy and digital rights management has become very important. Information security is mandatory rather than an additional feature. Numerous software techniques have been proposed to provide certain level of copyright and intellectual property protection. Techniques like obfuscation attempt to transform the code into a form that is harder to reverse engineer. Tamper-proofing causes a program to malfunction when it detects that it has been modified. Software watermarking embeds copyright notice in the software code to allow the owners of …

Gathering Cows Using Virtual Fencing Methodologies, Dean M. Anderson, Marek Doniec, Carrick Detweiler, Iuliu Vesilescu, Daniela Rus, Barbara Nolen, Roy Libeau

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Free-ranging livestock are classically controlled by herders. Holding, moving, or gathering free-ranging cattle requires flexible husbandry practices for efficient and effective lowstress animal management. Behavioral theory and practical experience indicates cattle can be taught to respond to auditory cues. Preliminary research has demonstrated that cows can be gathered autonomously using recorded audio cues associated with manual gathering. However, efficient gathering requires movement in the proper direction. Therefore, we believe using audio cues administered from directional virtual fencing (DVF™) equipment can facilitate proper animal orientation and facilitate the gathering of animals with minimal human intervention. Results from applying directional audio cues …

Achievable Rates And Resource Allocation Strategies For Imperfectly Known Fading Relay Channels, Junwei Zhang, M. Cenk Gursoy Jan 2009

Achievable Rates And Resource Allocation Strategies For Imperfectly Known Fading Relay Channels, Junwei Zhang, M. Cenk Gursoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Achievable rates and resource allocation strategies for imperfectly known fading relay channels are studied. It is assumed that communication starts with the network training phase in which the receivers estimate the fading coefficients. Achievable rate expressions for amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying schemes with different degrees of cooperation are obtained. We identify efficient strategies in three resource allocation problems: (1) power allocation between data and training symbols, (2) time/bandwidth allocation to the relay, and (3) power allocation between the source and relay in the presence of total power constraints. It is noted that unless the source-relay channel quality is high, cooperation …

Despite its economical, cultural, and biological importance, there has not been a large scale sequencing project to date for Camelus dromedarius. With the goal of sequencing complete DNA of the organism, we first established and sequenced camel EST libraries, generating 70,272 reads. Following trimming, chimera check, repeat masking, cluster and assembly, we obtained 23,602 putative gene sequences, out of which over 4,500 potentially novel or fast evolving gene sequences do not carry any homology to other available genomes. Functional annotation of sequences with similarities in nucleotide and protein databases has been obtained using Gene Ontology classification. Comparison to available …

Simulation Of Coherent Radar Imaging Using Continuous Wave Noise Radar, Jing Xu, Michael Hoffman, B.L. Cheong, R.D. Palmer Jan 2009

Simulation Of Coherent Radar Imaging Using Continuous Wave Noise Radar, Jing Xu, Michael Hoffman, B.L. Cheong, R.D. Palmer

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A computationally simple cross-correlation model for multiple backscattering from a continuous wave (CW) noise radar is developed and verified with theoretical analysis and brute-force time-domain simulations. Based on this cross-correlation model, a modification of an existing numerical method originally developed by Holdsworth and Reid for spaced antenna (SA) pulsed radar is used to simulate the estimated cross correlation corresponding to atmospheric backscattering using a coherent CW noise radar. Subse- quently, coherent radar imaging (CRI) processing comparisons between the CW noise radar and a con- ventional pulsed radar are presented that verify the potential of CW noise radar for atmospheric imaging.

Correction To “The Theory Of Quaternion Orthogonal Designs”, Tadeusz Wysocki, Beata J. Wysocki, Sarah Spence Adams

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

Seberry et al. claimed that even though the dual-polarized transmission channel cannot be considered as described by means of a single quaternionic gain, the maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding rule can be decoupled for orthogonal space–time-polarization block codes (OSTPBCs) derived from quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) [1, Sec. IV]. Regretfully, a correction is necessary, and we will show that decoupled decoding using the method presented therein is only optimal for codes derived from certain QODs, not from arbitrary QODs as previously suggested.

Scheduling Architectures For Diffserv Networks With Input Queuing Switches, Mei Yang, Henry Selvaraj, Enyue Lu, Jianping Wang, S. Q. Zheng, Yingtao Jiang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

ue to its simplicity and scalability, the differentiated services (DiffServ) model is expected to be widely deployed across wired and wireless networks. Though supporting DiffServ scheduling algorithms for output-queuing (OQ) switches have been widely studied, there are few DiffServ scheduling algorithms for input-queuing (IQ) switches in the literaure. In this paper, we propose two algorithms for scheduling DiffServ DiffServ networks with IQ switches: the dynamic DiffServ scheduling (DDS) algorithm and the hierarchical DiffServ scheduling (HDS) algorithm. The basic idea of DDS and HDS is to schedule EF and AF traffic According to Their minimum service rates with the reserved bandwidth …

Minimizing Spatial And Time Reservation With Collision-Aware Dcf In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Lubo Song, Chansu Yu Jan 2009

Minimizing Spatial And Time Reservation With Collision-Aware Dcf In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Lubo Song, Chansu Yu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Carrier sensing is widely adopted in wireless communication to protect data transfers from collisions. For example, distributed coordination function (DCF) in IEEE 802.11 standard renders a node to defer its communication if it senses the medium busy. For the duration of deferment, each frame carries, in its MAC header, a 16-bit number in microseconds during which any overhearing node must defer. However, even if the carrier signal is detected, both ongoing and a new communication can be simultaneously successful depending on their relative positions in the network or equivalently, their mutual interference level. Supporting multiple concurrent communications is …

Free Regions Of Sensor Nodes, Laxmi P. Gewali, Navin Rongatana, Henry Selvaraj, Jan B. Pedersen Jan 2009

Free Regions Of Sensor Nodes, Laxmi P. Gewali, Navin Rongatana, Henry Selvaraj, Jan B. Pedersen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

We introduce the notion of free region of a node in a sensor network. Intuitively, a free region of a node is the connected set of points R in its neighborhood such that the connectivity of the network remains the same when the node is moved to any point in R. We characterize several properties of free regions and develop an efficient algorithm for computing them. We capture free region in terms of related notions called in-free region and out-free region. We present an O(n2) algorithm for constructing the free region of a node, where n is the number of …

Insulation Condition Assessment Of Power Transformers Using Accelerated Ageing Tests, Mohammad Mirzaie, Ahmad Gholami, Hamid Reza Tayebi Jan 2009

Insulation Condition Assessment Of Power Transformers Using Accelerated Ageing Tests, Mohammad Mirzaie, Ahmad Gholami, Hamid Reza Tayebi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Thermal stress due to losses and environment temperature causes degradation to paper/oil insulation systems in transformers, even at operating temperature. Experience indicates that thermal ageing of oil and paper in power transformers leads to the change of some insulation characteristics. In this paper, insulating papers immersed in oil have been acceleratory aged at 140, 150, and 160 °C under laboratory conditions. Some of the oil properties, such as water content, breakdown voltage, acidity, together with the aged insulating paper properties such as electric strength, dielectric dissipation factor and tensile strength were measured and analyzed. Also, insulation system conditions under thermal …

Softcomputing Identification Techniques Of Asynchronous Machine Parameters: Evolutionary Strategy And Chemotaxis Algorithm, Nouri Benaïdja

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Softcomputing techniques are receiving attention as optimisation techniques for many industrial applications. Although these techniques eliminate the need for derivatives computation, they require much work to adjust their parameters at the stage of research and development. Issues such as speed, stability, and parameters convergence remain much to be investigated. This paper discusses the application of the method of reference model to determine parameters of asynchronous machines using two optimisation techniques. Softcomputing techniques used in this paper are evolutionary strategy and the chemotaxis algorithm. Identification results using the two techniques are presented and compared with respect to the conventional simplex technique …

Pca Based Protection Algorithm For Transformer Internal Faults, Erdal Kiliç, Okan Özgönenel, Ömer Usta, Dave Thomas

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper a new protection scheme is introduced to detect and identify transformer winding faults. The new approach is based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) using radial basis functions (RBFs) and the principal component analysis (PCA). The nonlinear system's input and output data is manipulated without considering any model of the system. This approach is used to detect and identify internal short circuit faults of a three phase custom built transformer. The suggested technique is also able to distinguish between the fault and magnetizing inrush current. The test studies carried out shows that the proposed method leads to satisfactory …

Weak Penetration And Radiation Through Apertures In Conducting Bodies Of Revolution, Korkut Yeği̇n Jan 2009

Weak Penetration And Radiation Through Apertures In Conducting Bodies Of Revolution, Korkut Yeği̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The simplest way to solve for penetration through small apertures in conducting surfaces is to treat the body as a scatterer and determine the interior field as the sum of the incident field and the scattered field contributed by the current induced on the surface of the body. However, it is well known that, if the aperture is very small or if the penetrated field is very weak this method yields very inaccurate results, which, in turn, prohibits proper design of electronic systems, especially for electromagnetic compatibility and interference. Previously, alternative integral equations formulations were proposed to remedy this problem …

Development Of A Magnetic Field Model And Insertion~Into A Commercial Electromagnetic Simulator, Priscila Fernandez Lopez, Christian Arcambal, Yolanda Vives Gilabert, Abhishek Ramanujan, David Baudry, Anne Louis, Belahcene Mazari

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

To take into account~certain ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC) aspects~and especially to evaluate the magnetic fields radiated by electronic components, different radiated emission models have been created. Within IRSEEM, a magnetic field model based on equivalent sources (electric dipoles) placed on a plane has been developed. Thus, this paper presents the modelling procedure that requires~magnetic near-field measurements and matrix inversion methods. Concerning the measurements of the field radiated by the component under test,~a near-field test bench with a loop antenna is used to~quantify the tangential components of the magnetic field in amplitude and phase. Then, these data are used as input to …

Both stroke subjects with hemiparesis and able-bodied subjects used the force-reflecting joystick to complete a suite of goal-directed tasks under various task settings. Kinematic metrics, developed for specific …

Quality Of Service Provisioning Through Resource Allocation And Data Aggregation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Carl Larsen Jan 2009

Quality Of Service Provisioning Through Resource Allocation And Data Aggregation In Wireless Sensor Networks, Carl Larsen

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this dissertation, improvement of quality of service (QoS) provisioning in wireless sensor networks (WSN) is examined using four different methods. The first two focus on allocation of limited resources in the face of changing network and channel conditions, and thus improving performance in terms of throughput and delay. The second two methods focus on using data aggregation to minimize the size and number of packet transmissions reducing the energy consumption and improving network lifetime.

Therefore, in the first paper a novel adaptive and distributed fair scheduling (ADFS) protocol for WSN is presented that allocates the channel bandwidth in proportion …

The introduction, growth and utilization of information and telecommunication technologies (ICTs) have been accompanied by an increase in illegal activities. With respect to cyberspace the Internet is an attractive environment to sex offenders. In addition to giving them greater access to minors, extending their reach from a limited geographical area to victims all around the world, it allows criminals to alter or conceal their identities. Sexual predators, stalkers, child pornographers and child traffickers can use various concealment techniques to make it more difficult for investigators to identify them …

Correlating Orphaned Windows Registry Data Structures, Damir Kahvedžić, Tahar Kechadi Jan 2009

Correlating Orphaned Windows Registry Data Structures, Damir Kahvedžić, Tahar Kechadi

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Recently, it has been shown that deleted entries of the Microsoft Windows registry (keys) may still reside in the system files once the entries have been deleted from the active database. Investigating the complete keys in context may be extremely important from both a Forensic Investigation point of view and a legal point of view where a lack of context can bring doubt to an argument. In this paper we formalise the registry behaviour and show how a retrieved value may not maintain a relation to the part of the registry it belonged to and hence lose that context. We …

Continuous Fraud Detection In Enterprise Systems Through Audit Trail Analysis, Peter J. Best, Pall Rikhardsson, Mark Toleman

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Enterprise systems, real time recording and real time reporting pose new and significant challenges to the accounting and auditing professions. This includes developing methods and tools for continuous assurance and fraud detection. In this paper we propose a methodology for continuous fraud detection that exploits security audit logs, changes in master records and accounting audit trails in enterprise systems. The steps in this process are: (1) threat monitoringsurveillance of security audit logs for ‘red flags’, (2) automated extraction and analysis of data from audit trails, and (3) using forensic investigation techniques to determine whether a fraud has actually occurred. We …
