A Model To Study Cyber Attack Mechanics And Denial-Of-Service Exploits Over The Internet's Router Infrastructure Using Colored Petri Nets, Lawrence M. Healy Nov 2009

A Model To Study Cyber Attack Mechanics And Denial-Of-Service Exploits Over The Internet's Router Infrastructure Using Colored Petri Nets, Lawrence M. Healy

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Internet‟s router infrastructure, a scale-free computer network, is vulnerable to targeted denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Protecting this infrastructure‟s stability is a vital national interest because of the dependence of economic and national security transactions on the Internet. Current defensive countermeasures that rely on monitoring specific router traffic have been shown to be costly, inefficient, impractical, and reactive rather than anticipatory.

To address these issues, this research investigation considers a new paradigm that relies on the systemic changes that occur during a cyber attack, rather than individual router traffic anomalies. It has been hypothesized in the literature that systemic knowledge of …

A Clustering Based Discretization For Supervised Learning, Ankit Gupta, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan Nov 2009

A Clustering Based Discretization For Supervised Learning, Ankit Gupta, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

We address the problem of discretization of continuous variables for machine learning classification algorithms. Existing procedures do not use interdependence between the variables towards this goal. Our proposed method uses clustering to exploit such interdependence. Numerical results show that this improves the classification performance in almost all cases. Even if an existing algorithm can successfully operate with continuous variables, better performance is obtained if variables are first discretized. An additional advantage of discretization is that it reduces the overall time-complexity.

Simple Ml Detector For Multiple Antennas Communication System, Ahmad Taqwa, Soegijardjo Soegijoko, Sugihartono Sugihartono, Suhartono Tjondronegoro

Makara Journal of Technology

Simple ML Detector for Multiple Antennas Communication System. In order to support providing broadband wireless communication services against limited and expensive frequency bandwidth, we have to develop a bandwidth efficient system. Therefore, in this paper we propose a closed-loop MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output) system using ML (Maximum Likelihood) detector to optimize capacity and to increase system performance. What is especially exciting about the benefits offered by MIMO is that a high capacity and performance can be attained without additional frequency-spectral resource. The grand scenario of this concept is the attained advantages of transformation matrices having capability to allocate transmitted signals power suit …

A Broad Prospective On Fuzzy Transforms: From Gauging Accuracy Of Quantity Estimates To Gauging Accuracy And Resolution Of Measuring Physical Fields, Vladik Kreinovich, Irina Perfilieva Nov 2009

A Broad Prospective On Fuzzy Transforms: From Gauging Accuracy Of Quantity Estimates To Gauging Accuracy And Resolution Of Measuring Physical Fields, Vladik Kreinovich, Irina Perfilieva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Fuzzy transform is a new type of function transforms that has been successfully used in different application. In this paper, we provide a broad prospective on fuzzy transform. Specifically, we show that fuzzy transform naturally appears when, in addition to measurement uncertainty, we also encounter another type of localization uncertainty: that the measured value may come not only from the desired location x, but also from the nearby locations.

From Gauging Accuracy Of Quantity Estimates To Gauging Accuracy And Resolution Of Measuring Physical Fields, Vladik Kreinovich, Irina Perfilieva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

For a numerical physical quantity v, because of the measurement imprecision, the measurement result V is, in general, different from the actual value v of this quantity. Depending on what we know about the measurement uncertainty d = V - v, we can use different techniques for dealing with this imprecision: probabilistic, interval, etc.

When we measure the values v(x) of physical fields at different locations x (and/or different moments of time), then, in addition to the same measurement uncertainty, we also encounter another type of localization uncertainty: that the measured value may come not only from the desired location …

Model Fusion Under Probabilistic And Interval Uncertainty, With Application To Earth Sciences, Omar Ochoa, Aaron A. Velasco, Christian Servin, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the most important studies of the earth sciences is that of the Earth's interior structure. There are many sources of data for Earth tomography models: first-arrival passive seismic data (from the actual earthquakes), first-arrival active seismic data (from the seismic experiments), gravity data, and surface waves. Currently, each of these datasets is processed separately, resulting in several different Earth models that have specific coverage areas, different spatial resolutions and varying degrees of accuracy. These models often provide complimentary geophysical information on earth structure (P and S wave velocity structure).

Combining the information derived from each requires a joint …

Adaptive Multicast On Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Using Tree-Based Meshes With Variable Density Of Redundant Paths, Sangman Moh, Sang Jun Lee, Chansu Yu Nov 2009

Adaptive Multicast On Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Using Tree-Based Meshes With Variable Density Of Redundant Paths, Sangman Moh, Sang Jun Lee, Chansu Yu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Multicasting has been extensively studied for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) because it is fundamental to many ad hoc network applications requiring close collaboration of multiple nodes in a group. A general approach is to construct an overlay structure such as multicast tree or mesh and to deliver a multicast packet to multiple receivers over the overlay structure. However, it either incurs a lot of overhead (multicast mesh) or performs poorly in terms of delivery ratio (multicast tree). This paper proposes an adaptive multicast scheme, called tree-based mesh with k-hop redundant paths (TBM k ), …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Infrared detectors based on quantum wells and quantum dots have attracted a lot of attention in the past few years. Our previous research has reported on the development of the first generation of quantum dots-in-a-well (DWELL) focal plane arrays, which are based on InAs quantum dots embedded in an InGaAs well having GaAs barriers. This focal plane array has successfully generated a two-color imagery in the mid-wave infrared (i.e. 3–5 μm) and the long-wave infrared (i.e. 8–12 μm) at a fixed bias voltage. Recently, the DWELL device has been further modified by embedding InAs quantum dots in InGaAs …

A Framework For Bioacoustic Vocalization Analysis Using Hidden Markov Models, Yao Ren, Michael T. Johnson, Patrick J. Clemins, Michael Darre, Sharon Stuart Glaeser, Tomasz S. Osiejuk, Ebenezer Out-Nyarko

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) as a recognition framework for automatic classification of animal vocalizations has a number of benefits, including the ability to handle duration variability through nonlinear time alignment, the ability to incorporate complex language or recognition constraints, and easy extendibility to continuous recognition and detection domains. In this work, we apply HMMs to several different species and bioacoustic tasks using generalized spectral features that can be easily adjusted across species and HMM network topologies suited to each task. This experimental work includes a simple call type classification task using one HMM per vocalization for repertoire analysis of …

Analysis And Diagnostics Of Adjacent And Nonadjacent Broken-Rotor-Bar Faults In Squirrel-Cage Induction Machines, Gennadi Y. Sizov, Ahmed Mohamed Sayed Ahmed, Chia-Chou Yeh, Nabeel Demerdash

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, faults associated with the rotor of an induction machine are considered. More specifically, effects of adjacent and nonadjacent bar breakages on rotor fault diagnostics in squirrel-cage induction machines are studied. It is shown that some nonadjacent bar breakages may result in the masking of the commonly used fault indices and, hence, may lead to a possible misdiagnosis of the machine. A discussion of the possible scenarios of these breakages as well as some conclusions regarding the types of squirrel-cage induction machines (number of poles, number of squirrel-cage bars, etc.) that may be more prone to these nonadjacent …

Sharing Landmark Information Using Mixture Of Gaussian Terrain Spatiograms, Damian M. Lyons Oct 2009

Sharing Landmark Information Using Mixture Of Gaussian Terrain Spatiograms, Damian M. Lyons

Faculty Publications

In this paper we evaluate the use of a novel spatial histogram called the terrain spatiogram as a common representation for exchanging landmark information between robots working as a team to map an area. Individual robots use range sensors to provide the spatial dimension of the spatiogram and video for the image dimension. We have previously shown that terrain spatiograms can be shared between robots in a heterogeneous team to recognize landmarks and to fuse observations from multiple sensors or multiple platforms. A terrain spatiogram using a mixture of Gaussians (MOG) model is introduced and a corresponding normalized spatiogram similarity …

Combining Multiple Scoring Systems For Target Tracking Using Rank-Score Characteristics, Damian M. Lyons, D. Frank Hsu Oct 2009

Combining Multiple Scoring Systems For Target Tracking Using Rank-Score Characteristics, Damian M. Lyons, D. Frank Hsu

Faculty Publications

Video target tracking is the process of estimating the current state, and predicting the future state of a target from a sequence of video sensor measurements. Multitarget video tracking is complicated by the fact that targets can occlude one another, affecting video feature measurements in a highly non-linear and difficult to model fashion. In this paper, we apply a multisensory fusion approach to the problem of multitarget video tracking with occlusion. The approach is based on a data-driven method (CFA) to selecting the features and fusion operations that improve a performance criterion. Each sensory cue is treated as a scoring …

Automating Java Program Testing Using Ocl And Aspectj, Yoonsik Cheon, Carmen Avila Oct 2009

Automating Java Program Testing Using Ocl And Aspectj, Yoonsik Cheon, Carmen Avila

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Random testing can eliminate subjectiveness in constructing test data and increase the diversity of test data. However, one difficult problem is to construct test oracles that decide test results---test failures or successes. Assertions can be used as test oracles and are most effective when derived from formal specifications such as OCL constraints. If fully automated, random testing can reduce the cost of testing dramatically. In this paper we propose an approach for automating Java program testing by combining random testing and OCL. The key idea of our approach is to use OCL constraints as test oracles by translating them to …

Comparing Role-Playing Activities In Second Life And Face-To-Face Environments, Fei Gao, Jeongmin J. Noh, Matthew J. Koehler

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

This study compared student performances in role-playing activities in both a face-to-face (FTF) environment and a virtual 3D environment, Second Life (SL). We found that students produced a similar amount of communication in the two environments, but the communication styles were different. In SL role-playing activities, students took more conversational turns, but have shorter exchanges compared to the FTF environment. Students generated an equal amount of topic-related concepts in the two environments. They also reported role-playing activities in SL as more interesting and less formal. The educational implications for this study are discussed.

An Initial Report On The Impact Of Multiple Technical Degree Programs On Undergraduate Recruitment, Amber Settle, Liz Friedman Oct 2009

An Initial Report On The Impact Of Multiple Technical Degree Programs On Undergraduate Recruitment, Amber Settle, Liz Friedman

Technical Reports

In this paper, we describe initial results of a survey taken by freshman and first-year transfer students at DePaul University during the 2009-2010 academic year. While DePaul is unusual in offering a large number of technically-oriented degree programs and this information is prominent in promotional literature, no study of the impact of multiple degree programs on the recruitment of first-year students had been conducted. The results of this initial study show that while a large majority of students indicate that the number of degree programs is a positive factor for application and enrollment at DePaul, more important factors include the …

Towards Google Challenge: Combining Contextual And Social Information For Web Video Categorization, Xiao Wu, Wan-Lei Zhao, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Web video categorization is a fundamental task for web video search. In this paper, we explore the Google challenge from a new perspective by combing contextual and social information under the scenario of social web. The semantic meaning of text (title and tags), video relevance from related videos, and user interest induced from user videos, are integrated to robustly determine the video category. Experiments on YouTube videos demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution. The performance reaches 60% improvement compared to the traditional text based classifiers.

Cs 410/610: Theoretical Foundations Of Computing, Thomas Sudkamp

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi

This course is an introduction to one of the fundamental topics in the theory of computer science: computability theory. Computability theory is concerned with determining whether there is an algorithmic solution to a problem. The study of computability uses the Turing machine as the basic computational model. A Turing machine is a random access, read-write, finite state automaton. Although the Turing machine provides a simple computational framework, the Church-Turing thesis asserts that any problem that can be solved in any algorithmic manner can be solved by a Turing machine.
