Pollution Of Surface Irrigation Waters By Plant Pathogenic Organisms, James R. Steadman, C. R. Maier, H. F. Schwartz, E. D. Kerr Aug 1975

Pollution Of Surface Irrigation Waters By Plant Pathogenic Organisms, James R. Steadman, C. R. Maier, H. F. Schwartz, E. D. Kerr

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Systematic sampling of waterways and irrigation runoff from agricultural lands in the North Platte Project of Nebraska in July and August of 1972–1974 demonstrated that phytopathogenic organisms were disseminated. The organisms monitored included the bean common blight bacterium Xanthomonas phaseoli, the bean white mold fungus Whetzelinia sclerotiorum and various nematodes. Although many types of nematodes often were recovered from irrigation water, Heterodera sp. cysts which cause significant disease problems in the valley were found infrequently. Patterns of movement of the bacterial and fungal organisms were correlated with previous or current season infection of bean plants. The short-term survival of X. …

Chronic Effect Of Low Ph On Fathead Minnow Survival, Growth And Reproduction, Donald I. Mount Jan 1973

Chronic Effect Of Low Ph On Fathead Minnow Survival, Growth And Reproduction, Donald I. Mount

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Staff Publications

Fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas Rafinesque) were continuously exposed to reduced pH levels of 4.5, 5.2, 5.9, 6.6 and 7.5 (control) during a 13-month, one-generation test. Survival was not affected, even at the lowest pH tested. Fish behavior was abnormal, and fish were deformed at pH 4.5 and 5.2. Egg production and egg hatchability were reduced at pH 5.9 and lower, and all eggs were abnormal. A pH of 6.6 was marginal for vital life functions, but safe for continuous exposure. Free carbon dioxide, liberated by the addition of sulfuric acid to reduce the pH, may have had an unknown …

Chronic Toxicity Of A Copper, Cadmium And Zinc Mixture To The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas Rafinesque), John G. Eaton Jan 1973

Chronic Toxicity Of A Copper, Cadmium And Zinc Mixture To The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas Rafinesque), John G. Eaton

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Staff Publications

Fathead minnows were exposed to a series or concentrations of a copper, cadmium and zinc mixture during a 12.5 month chronic test in water of 200 mg 1-1 total hardness. The metal concentrations in the mixture were selected on the basis of results obtained during previous chronic exposures to each of the metals individually in the same water. Strict summation of the chronic toxicities of the metals was not indicated when they were tested in combination. Toxic effects of the mixture attributable to copper appeared to be increased, but that attributable to cadmium was reduced. The effects thought to …

A Simplified Flow-Splitting Chamber And Siphon For Proportional Diluters, Duane Benoit, Frank A. Puglisi Jan 1973

A Simplified Flow-Splitting Chamber And Siphon For Proportional Diluters, Duane Benoit, Frank A. Puglisi

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Staff Publications

Simplified flow-splitting chambers and siphons were designed and tested for use with proportional diluters in bioassay systems. The apparatus allows each concentration from the diluter to be thoroughly mixed and divided four ways for delivery to duplicate fry and adult exposure tanks. Test water delivered to each exposure tank varied by only 5-10 per cent of the calculated volumes.

Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne Jan 1968

Urban Geology—A Need And A Challenge, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Urban land uses are rapidly converting open land into intensively used land. Generally, in planning those uses, a comprehensive study has included everything except an evaluation of the land in three dimensions. Geologists are eminently well equipped to supply the missing data, but they must also be aware of the needs of the urban community and the kinds of information needed by planners if they are to write reports usable by planners. Urban and environmental geology is a newly expanding field in the use of geologic data to help solve some urban problems in the planning stage. It is likely …

Recreation Aspects Of The Lower Missouri River Jan 1968

Recreation Aspects Of The Lower Missouri River

US Army Corps of Engineers

The Missouri, longest of America's great rivers, played an important and vital role in the westward expansion of the United States. For years it was the chief form of transportation connecting the populous cities of the east with the vast resources of the west. Generations of Americans have been thrilled by the many stories and adventures relating to it.

This is the river that for almost a century was a principal highway for the biggest adventure in North America -- the development of the west. It served in turn the explorer, the fur trader, the homesteader, and developed the rough …

Nebraska Farm Building Data For South-East Counties Taken From U.S. Census, R. M. Loper Jan 1946

Nebraska Farm Building Data For South-East Counties Taken From U.S. Census, R. M. Loper

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications

The material given on the following pages was selected from United States Census data for the years indicated.

It has been arranged to permit analysis and comparison of building trends since 1900, both in the state and in individual counties. Such a study often reveals areas in which effective educatinal programs could be developed and indicates the phases of such programs which are needed most.

Unfortunatel, complete 1945 figures are not available yet, but the space has been left for them so that they may be added when released by the Census Bureau.

Nebraska Farm Building Data For North-East Counties Taken From U.S. Census, R. M. Loper

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications

Fluctuation in the number of farms since the start of the century reflects economic trends, drouth effects and the results of increasing mechanization, particularly since 1935.

The 1945 figures also show the influence of land taken out of production for use as air bases, ordnance plants and ammuition depots. No doubt some of this will be returned eventually to agricultural uses. Since the buildings were removed from this land during the war some new sets probably. will be constructed when individual ownership is obtained again. Such activities present excellent opportunities for developing farmsteads efficiently and attractively arranged; buildings designed to …

Two Lincoln (Nebraska) Typhoid Fever Epidemics Of 1911 And 1912., Herbert H. Waite

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

On August 29, 1912, I was requested by the Board of Health of the city of Lincoln to make an investigation to determine if possible the origin and cause of an outbreak of a disease reported as typhoid fever which was then prevailing. This outbreak was said to be most prevalent in one particular portion of the city and consequently attention was turned to that portion. Of the cases reported an investigation was made of over 60 individuals and after considering all the probable causes for the majority of those affected the conclusion was reached that all could be logically …
