An Investigation As To The Uses Of The Topographic Map And Improvements Desired By The General Public, George O. Boeckman
An Investigation As To The Uses Of The Topographic Map And Improvements Desired By The General Public, George O. Boeckman
Masters Theses
"The demand for topographic maps from hunters, fishermen, vacationers, professional engineers etc, has been increasing with each passing year. In 1940 people bought some 700,000 copies of topographic maps. In 1946 sales had jumped to well over 2,000,000 copies. Civilian use of these maps by veterans has contributed substantially to the tremendous expansion of demand for maps since World War II. In recent years, the quality of topographic maps has been greatly improved by refinements in methods and by the use of aerial photography in map compilation. This advancement, and an ever-increasing demand from engineers, geologists, and many others for …

An Economic Study Of The "C" Factor, David Hunter Robinson
Masters Theses
"After due consideration of the facts and hypothetical conditions enumerated herein, it was decided that this work would be devoted to developing a means of determining the most economical “C” factor to be used; one that will be consistent with ease of operating the plotting machine, the required accuracy of the finished compilation and economy. In other words, the highest value of the "C" factor that will produce results within the accuracy requirements under normal operating procedures.
As a secondary project, it was decided to plot a curve using points determined by analyzing a series of spot readings made at …
Hydrology Of Small Drainage Areas, James Kinchen Searcy
Hydrology Of Small Drainage Areas, James Kinchen Searcy
Masters Theses
"Realizing the need for data on small drainage areas the Missouri Highway Commission in 1947 began a cooperative project with the Water Resources Division of the United States Geological Survey which includes the establishment of small area gaging stations and recording rain gages.
The purpose of this investigation is to study some of the data collected in the few years of operation of these small area stations with the aim of testing some of the hydrologic tools useful in the study of larger drainage basins to determine their applicability on small drainage basins. The relationship between the runoff of large …
An Investigation Of End-Anchorage And Performance Of Sr-4 Strain Gages On A Prestressed Concrete Beam, Howard W. Nunez Jr.
An Investigation Of End-Anchorage And Performance Of Sr-4 Strain Gages On A Prestressed Concrete Beam, Howard W. Nunez Jr.
Masters Theses
"In recent years there has been brought to the attention of engineers and architects a new medium of construction---prestressed concrete. Reinforced concrete has long been recognized as a satisfactory material for use in the construction of buildings, bridges, highways, tanks and other structures. However, most concrete designers will concede that this material has many drawbacks. For instance, in a simple beam of rectangular cross-section, roughly only one half or the concrete is relied on to resist compressive forces. The tensile strength of the concrete is considered to be zero, and steel bars or rods must be inserted to carry the …
The Effect Of Grain Size On Shearing Strength Of Sand, Keyhan Samimi
The Effect Of Grain Size On Shearing Strength Of Sand, Keyhan Samimi
Masters Theses
"The object of this study is to determine experimentally the effect of definite grain size on the shearing characteristics of sandy soils. As it will be discussed in detail under the article - The Mechanics of Shear, the shearing characteristics of sandy soils depends on many factors such as grain size and shape, soil structure and relative density, the water content of soil. An attempt is made throughout the entire investigation to determine the effect of definite grain size on the shearing value and the angle of internal friction under the dry and saturated conditions. Furthermore, the results of shear …

For the past 2 years a project has been carried on by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station and the United States Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, in cooperation with the Utah State Engineer, in the Ashley and Ferron valleys of Utah to determine the consumptive use of water in these areas. This report is the preliminary part of the third year of study. It includes a determination of unit consumptive use values for the major agricultural crops. These values will later be used by the Soil Conservation Service and Experiment Station in determining the valley consumptive use by the …
Investigation Of Stress And Crack Distribution In Concrete Slabs Containing Welded Wire Reinforcement, Joseph H. Senne
Investigation Of Stress And Crack Distribution In Concrete Slabs Containing Welded Wire Reinforcement, Joseph H. Senne
Masters Theses
"Concrete is daily becoming more important as a structural material. However, without steel reinforcement, concrete would never have attained such wide use since, being weak in tension, it must be combined with some other material to take the tension stresses and prevent the tension cracks in the concrete from opening an appreciable amount.
One type of steel reinforcement used particularly for footings, beams and columns is known as deformed bar. In this case deformations are placed on the bars at the time of rolling. These deformations act as mechanical anchorage in preventing the bar from slipping, thus allowing it to …
The Relationship Between The Centrifuge Moisture Equivalent And The Vacuum Moisture Equivalent In Soils, Samuel Payton Halcomb
The Relationship Between The Centrifuge Moisture Equivalent And The Vacuum Moisture Equivalent In Soils, Samuel Payton Halcomb
Masters Theses
"Soil is a material that has been formed through the influence of many different natural agencies. The engineer is not so much interested in how the soil was formed, but he does want to know the characteristics of the soil with respect to its use as a structural material. Therefore, the engineer is primarily interested in the physical properties of soils.
Much progress has been made during the past twenty five years in the study of Soil Mechanics, but even today there is a tendency among engineers to think of soil as just a mixture of clay, sand, silt and …
Investigation Of The Fundamental Properties Of Rubber-Asphalt Mixtures, Yali Cevat Hasan
Investigation Of The Fundamental Properties Of Rubber-Asphalt Mixtures, Yali Cevat Hasan
Masters Theses
"The writer of this thesis believes that the most important thing next to the original construction cost of a road, is the maintenance cost. It is apparent that the maintenance cost for any given road is directly proportional to the percentage of worn out sections in that road. It is believed that climatic conditions are the very first cause of road failures and that traffic on the road often has a secondary degree of importance in the causing of road surface failures….
It is obvious that extreme heat as well as extreme cold will ruin a road. A heavy traffic …
An Economy Study Of Vierendeel Trusses, Donald Lee Dean
An Economy Study Of Vierendeel Trusses, Donald Lee Dean
Masters Theses
"Since the introduction of the pin connected steel truss in the United States in 1847 as a truss that could be actually designed, there has been very few basic changes in the truss as a structure. True, web members have been sloped or braced in many different ways to best adapt the truss for the structural materials being used, and over the protests of many , pin connections have almost wholly given way to riveted or arc welded connections, however, the basic idea of using all members as two force members has prevailed. Concern over the existence of bending stresses …
Drainage By Pumping In The Lewiston Area, Utah, Paul J. Pehrson
Drainage By Pumping In The Lewiston Area, Utah, Paul J. Pehrson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In irrigated areas it often becomes necessary to provide means by which the excess water may be removed. After a period of time if these drainage provisions are not made, it may become necessary, because of the saline soils or water logged condition that may develop, to abandon the land for agricultural purposes.
The increases of irrigation on the higher lands in Utah has resulted in an increased need for drainage on much of the lower land in the valleys. This increased need for drainage has long been recognized and in 1947 it influenced the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, in …
Field Resolution Tests With The Metrogon Lens, Robert Greig Livingston
Field Resolution Tests With The Metrogon Lens, Robert Greig Livingston

"The first portion of this treatise is devoted to a compilation of general knowledge concerning photographic resolution testing - an explanation of certain optical terms; the drafting of resolution targets; methods for averaging resolution values, measured at various positions on the format, to obtain one over-all value for an exposure; and a description of the factors involved in conducting the photographic operations. In the second part of the paper, analyses of the results obtained from line-target resolutions are made with the purpose of determining those combinations of aperture, filter, and shutter speed which result in high photographic resolutions. This information …
An Application Of Skew Frequency Curves To River Stages, Vernon A. C. Gevecker
An Application Of Skew Frequency Curves To River Stages, Vernon A. C. Gevecker
Professional Degree Theses
"Floods have occurred in the past and will occur again in the future. References to floods are incorporated in some of the early writings of man. Unfortunately though man has recorded the event, he has seldom recorded facts whereby it is possible to determine the volume of flow or the height to which the water rose. Where man has recorded the height to which water rose, much data such as channel conditions, vegetation coverage on the flood plain, etc., remains vague or unknown.
It has been only in comparatively recent times with the advent of the steamboat that man has …
The Economic Spacing Of Contraction Joints In Reinforced Concrete Pavements, Wilbert Frederick Wegener
The Economic Spacing Of Contraction Joints In Reinforced Concrete Pavements, Wilbert Frederick Wegener
Masters Theses
"Structurally, there are two types of joints used in concrete pavements: (a) the tied, or permanently-closed joint; and (b) the open or free type of joint. The permanently closed joint utilized tie-steel of some form to keep the joint from opening. Usually, this steel is in the form of short individual bars extending across the joint and bonded to both slabs (designated as "tie-bars") or in the form of distributed reinforcement. The remaining method of classification, that of refering [sic] to the joint purpose, gives the expansion joint, contraction joint, and warping joint. An expansion joint is, as the name …
Economical Span Length Ratios For Three-Span Continuous Girder Bridges, Donald Hindrik Timmer
Economical Span Length Ratios For Three-Span Continuous Girder Bridges, Donald Hindrik Timmer
Masters Theses
"The three-span continuous bridge is one of the most popular bridges used by highway departments at the present time. The low first cost and overall economy combined with the pleasing appearance of this type of bridge as compared to simple span structures has led most highway departments to use continuous spans whenever conditions permit. The design of three-span continuous bridges, as well as the design of any of the other bridge types, is usually carried out as an analysis rather than a design. In the case of the three-span continuous girder, with rolled steel beams, an initial assumption as to …
The Study Of Effect Of Definite Grain Sized Sand On The Shearing Strength Of Clays, Faruk Omer Akkoseoglu
The Study Of Effect Of Definite Grain Sized Sand On The Shearing Strength Of Clays, Faruk Omer Akkoseoglu
Masters Theses
"Slopes of all kinds, including mountains, hills, sea coast bluffs, river banks, and man made cuts and fills, stay in place only because of the shearing strength possessed by the soil or rock of which they are composed. The resistance of soils to shearing strength is probably the most important of all the soil properties to foundation engineers. Most of the serious structural failures which are due to unexpected soil behaviour are caused by deficiency in the shearing strength of the soil. Water, on the other hand, possesses no static strength in shear, therefore bodies of water have no surface …
Effects Of Sand Admixtures On The Physical Properties Of Soils, Necati Kanatsiz
Effects Of Sand Admixtures On The Physical Properties Of Soils, Necati Kanatsiz
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of sand admixtures on the physical properties of soils. Soil may be defined as a heterogenous [sic] collection of rock and mineral fragments whose decomposition and disintegration have been brought about by the action of physical, chemical, and biological forces, working singly or in combination...In the conviction that the study of soils, with respect to highway engineering, is becoming more and more important this study was undertaken in order to learn whether the addition of sand would lead to desirable results, and if not, at least secure some further addition …
The Theory Of Limit Design As Applied To Column Analysis, John Francis Mccarthy
The Theory Of Limit Design As Applied To Column Analysis, John Francis Mccarthy
Masters Theses
"In any discussion of compression members of a structure, account has to be taken primarily of the relative "slenderness" or bending weakness of the member. If the member be so short that axial loading causes very slight deflection at any point throughout the member, it is usually designated a simple compression member and no account is taken of the additional stresses due to the deflection. When, however, the ratio of the length to the least radius of gyration of the member becomes so large that bending stresses cannot be ignored, the member is usually called a column and its consequent …
Velocity Studies In A Vertical Pipe Flowing Full, Robert Franklin Tindall
Velocity Studies In A Vertical Pipe Flowing Full, Robert Franklin Tindall
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation is to install a hard drawn copper pipe approximately 1/2 inch in diameter, and approximately 35 feet long in a vertical position. The copper pipe is to have pressure takeoff points at various distances along the length of the pipe. The purpose of these takeoffs is to measure the pressure of the water at the point of takeoff in the pipe. The water is to be forced into the pipe, assisted by gravity, thereby causing a pressure of some measurable quanity [sic] greater than absolute zero pressure. The discharge was to be by volumetric measurement, …
Effect Of Removed Web-Section On Critical Load For I-Beam Columns, Henri Simon Rigo
Effect Of Removed Web-Section On Critical Load For I-Beam Columns, Henri Simon Rigo
Masters Theses
"This investigation deals with a series of column tests of aluminum I-sections which have a perforated web. Specifically, the tests show that the weight is decreased without decrease in strength. Several basic assumptions are made in the design of a column. The physical action of a column is idealized in the derivation of formulae which will predict within reasonable limits the load which the member will sustain. In a given installation of non-homogeneity of material, kinks, uneven bearing, lack of symmetry due to riveting or welding, stress concentration and many other disturbing factors not in agreement with these assumptions may …
Flood Control With Retarding Basin Type Reservoirs In Meramec Basin, Missouri, Ilhan Kaya Ozbilen
Flood Control With Retarding Basin Type Reservoirs In Meramec Basin, Missouri, Ilhan Kaya Ozbilen
Masters Theses
"When rainfall occurs that provides more runoff than can be carried within the normal channels of existing streams a flood results. The excess water overflows the valley lands, invades developed areas, and causes destruction of property or, in extreme cases, loss of human life...Many structures are built to control water: Waterways of proper depth and width provide arteries of transportation; water controlled and discharged through water-wheels provides power; water may be caught in storage basins and distributed for irrigation or water supply; and water that is an actual or potential source of damage or danger to property or to human …
The Precipitation-Runoff Relationship On The Grand River Basin Of Missouri And Iowa, J. Kent Roberts
The Precipitation-Runoff Relationship On The Grand River Basin Of Missouri And Iowa, J. Kent Roberts
Masters Theses
"In the study of a drainage basin which is to be utilized for water supply or water power, there is frequently a dearth or complete lack of runoff data, though precipitation data are almost always available. The Water Resources Branch of the United States Geological Survey maintains gaging stations on various streams and runoff records from these streams are available from their publications and offices. Many of these runoff records cover a considerable number of years, and are entirely sufficient for use in an analysis of any drainage basin covered by such data. Some of these gaging stations have not …

Calibration Of Weirs By Means Of Critical Flow And Specific Energy, Robert A. Rapp
Calibration Of Weirs By Means Of Critical Flow And Specific Energy, Robert A. Rapp
Masters Theses
"For many years man has been relying more each day upon metering devices to measure the flow of fluids in industry. The orifice, orifice meter, venturi meter, pitot tube, nozzle, flume and the weir have been employed, each having its own particular advantage.
In this parade of metering progress, the contracted weir has long been the forgotten brother of the suppressed weir. In almost every textbook on hydraulics or fluid mechanics, the following words appear, "end contractions are to be avoided where the weir cannot be calibrated". This skepticism and the length or absurdity of some contracted weir formulas led …
The Effect Of Pressure Prehydration On The Strength Of Hydraulic Cement Concrete, Thomas Holmes Whitfield Jr.
The Effect Of Pressure Prehydration On The Strength Of Hydraulic Cement Concrete, Thomas Holmes Whitfield Jr.
Masters Theses
"It appears that the rapidity of curing and the degree or ultimate strength of concrete can be influenced by both chemical and physical factors. The main function of the physical factors involved seems to be the creating of a more intimate combination of the cement and water which are the active ingredients. For example, finer grinding of the cement would present more surface area to the water; the application of heat would decrease the amount of surface tension of the water, in addition to speeding the chemical reaction, steam under pressure would force water into the porous particles of cement; …
The Development Of Plans For A National Airport For Ankara, Turkey, Mehmet Ragip Samli
The Development Of Plans For A National Airport For Ankara, Turkey, Mehmet Ragip Samli
Masters Theses
"'The present rapid development of general interest in aviation has brought to the front a new field of engineering. Development of the airplane has already reached a stage where the limit of its usefulness seems fixed only by the places which may be provided for taking off and landing. Due to the newness of the problem, not every one on whom responsibility rests recognizes the fact that the selection of the proper site and location for an airport is just as much an engineering problem as are its design and construction.'
The Turkish government began construction or the Ankara-Esenboga airport …
