Oscillatory And Monotonic Modes Of Long-Wave Marangoni Convection In A Thin Film, Sergey Shklyaev, Mikhail Khenner, Alexei Alabuzhev
Oscillatory And Monotonic Modes Of Long-Wave Marangoni Convection In A Thin Film, Sergey Shklyaev, Mikhail Khenner, Alexei Alabuzhev
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We study long-wave Marangoni convection in a layer heated from below. Using the scaling k=O Bi, where k is the wave number and Bi is the Biot number, we derive a set of amplitude equations. Analysis of this set shows presence of monotonic and oscillatory modes of instability. Oscillatory mode has not been previously found for such direction of heating. Studies of weakly nonlinear dynamics demonstrate that stable steady and oscillatory patterns can be found near the stability threshold.
Applications Of Ultrafine Powder Coatings, A.S. Mohammad Sayem Mozumder
Applications Of Ultrafine Powder Coatings, A.S. Mohammad Sayem Mozumder
Digitized Theses
Powder coatings have emerged as an alternative to the conventional liquid coatings when environmental regulations become stricter every year. The advantage of powder coatings mainly renders to their solvent-free formulations, because solvent(s) used in liquid coatings are to be evaporated to environment contributing to the total volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. Although advantageous, until recently, powder coating was not able to provide surface finishes comparable to the liquid coatings. However, when ultrafine powders (particularly, in the size range of 15-25 µm) becomes flowable with the aid of nano-additive(s), ultrafine powder coatings (UPCs) came into business with its thinner and smoother …

As the most frequent congenital anomaly and the leading cause of death, congenital heart disease is an attractive target for tissue engineering research. The challenging target to engineer a native blood vessel stems from the need to find substitutes for pediatric patients born with congenital defects. The tissue engineering graft functions to bring various cells of the vasculature in close proximity to one another to enable intercellular signaling which facilitates cell adhesion, migration and differentiation. …
Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Processing Of Nano - Clays And Polymer/Clay Nanocomposites, Mihai Manitiu
Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Processing Of Nano - Clays And Polymer/Clay Nanocomposites, Mihai Manitiu
Wayne State University Dissertations
Effective dispersion of the fillers in a polymer matrix and improvement of polymer-clay interactions are two key challenges in the field of nanocomposites. A novel processing method that utilizes the unique properties of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) to disperse nano-clay and prepare a series of polymer/clay nanocomposites with enhanced properties was explored.
Significant dispersion was achieved using the scCO2 process with Cloisite 10A without the presence of an organic phase as evident by the absence of the diffraction peak in WAXD and the presence of individual tactoids that lost their parallel registry. The expanded flexible structure of the scCO2 processed …
Rotational Relaxation Times Of Individual Compounds With Simulations Of Molecular Asphalt Models, Liqun Zhang, Michael L. Greenfield
Rotational Relaxation Times Of Individual Compounds With Simulations Of Molecular Asphalt Models, Liqun Zhang, Michael L. Greenfield
Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The dynamical properties of a complex system incorporate contributions from the diverse components from which it is constituted. To study this relationship in a multicomponent system, relaxation times based on rotation autocorrelation functions in molecular dynamics simulations were analyzed for molecules in two sets of unmodified and polymer-modified model asphalt/bitumen systems over 298–473 K. The model asphalt systems were proposed previously to approximate the chemical and mechanical properties of real asphalts. Relaxations were modeled using a modified Kaulrausch–Williams–Watts function and were based on the third Legendre polynomial of normal vector time correlation functions for aromatic species asphaltene, polar aromatic, naphthene …

Partitioning Of Perfluorooctanoate Into Phosphatidylcholine Bilayers Is Chain Length-Independent, Wei Xie, Geoffrey D. Bothun, Hans-Joachim Lehmler
Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The chain length dependence of the interaction of PFOA, a persistent environmental contaminant, with dimyristoyl- (DMPC), dipalmitoyl- (DPPC) and distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC) was investigated using steady-state fluorescence anisotropy spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). PFOA caused a linear depression of the main phase transition temperature Tm while increasing the width of the phase transition of all three phosphatidylcholines. Although PFOA's effect on Tm and the transition width decreased in the order DMPC > DPPC > DSPC, its relative effect on the phase behavior was largely independent of the phosphatidylcholine. PFOA caused swelling of DMPC but not DPPC …
A Multiscale Gibbs-Helmholtz Constrained Cubic Equation Of State, Angelo Lucia
A Multiscale Gibbs-Helmholtz Constrained Cubic Equation Of State, Angelo Lucia
Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper presents a radically new approach to cubic equations of state (EOS) in which the Gibbs-Helmholtz equation is used to constrain the attraction or energy parameter, a. The resulting expressions for a(T, p) for pure components and a(T, p, x) for mixtures contain internal energy departure functions and completely avoid the need to use empirical expressions like the Soave alpha function. Our approach also provides a novel and thermodynamically rigorous mixing rule for a(T, p, x).When the internal energy departure function is computed using Monte …

The Development And Application Of A Novel Free-Damage Fracturing Fluid (Ph<2), Jin Zhang, Yan Zhang, Yongfu Wu, Xiuqing He, Xinzhu Zhang
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
At present, water-Based fracturing fluid systems are mainly polymer (macromolecule) and visco-elastic surfactant (micro molecule). Because of polymer properties and incomplete gelout, the damage to matrices and conductivity of artificial fractures will be inevitable. the surfactant-Based fracturing fluid system is a micro-molecule system not to damage artificial fractures. However, it is difficult to eliminate the damages from rock debris moving and clay swelling information. a novel free-damage fracturing fluid system (FDFF), a cationic surfactant derived from a long chain fatty acid, has been developed and applied in Daqing oil field. FDFF can crosslink in a wide range from a strong …

Alkyl Polyglycoside/1-Naphthol Formulations With Ultra-Low Interfacial Tensions Against N-Octane For Enhanced Oil Recovery, Stefan Iglauer, Yongfu Wu, Patrick Shuler, Yongchun Tang, William Goddard
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present Alkyl polyglycoside (APG)/1-naphthol formulations which show ultra-low interfacial tensions (IFT) against n-octane. We demonstrate that 1-naphthol is very efficient as a cosolvent in terms of reducing IFT. These formulations are therefore potentially suitable as agents for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). an increasing APG concentration strongly increased viscosity, and the formulations showed shear-thinning behavior. in a core flood EOR test we showed that this type of formulation significantly increased oil production. © 2010, European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers.
Enhanced Pervaporation Using A Novel Pump Configuration, Donough Patrick Shanahan
Enhanced Pervaporation Using A Novel Pump Configuration, Donough Patrick Shanahan
Theses
The pervaporation process is investigated in this work under the guises of process design improvements and process performance. Several avenues of research were investigated.
The main aim of the project was to investigate the use of liquid ring vacuum pumps for permeate recovery at laboratory and industrial scales. Due to technical and economical issues, these pumps were deemed unsuitable. This analysis then had to be extended further. Previous work investigated the use of dry vacuum pump systems on a lab scale and this work was extended to industrial scale simulations. Results from the lab scale process particularly those relating to …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Vertebroplasty (VP) and balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) are now widely used for treating patients in whom the pain due to vertebral compression fractures is severe and has proved to be refractory to conservative treatment. These procedures involve percutaneous delivery of a bolus of an injectable bone cement either directly to the fractured vertebral body, VB (VP) or to a void created in it by an inflatable bone tamp (BKP). Thus, the cement is a vital component of both procedures. In the vast majority of VPs and BKPs, a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement is used. This material has many shortcomings, notably …

Design And Development Of Highly Active, Nanoengineered, Platinum Based Core-Shell Electrodes For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Seth Louis Knupp
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Highly active nanoengineered core-shell electrocatalyst have a great potential to be used as fuel cell electrodes. They can alleviate problems related with commercial carbon supported platinum by simultaneously lowering cost while enhancing reaction kinetics and overall performance. More recently, use of nanoengineered core-shell electrode structures have showed their ability to enhance the stability and overall lifetime of the catalyst without sacrificing the electrode's performance. We studied the potential of using highly active core-shell nanoparticles supported on carbon nanomaterials as fuel cell electrodes.
Strength Evaluation And Transportation Behavior Of Preformed Particle Gel Using Screens And Tubes, Rajesh Sarma Challa
Strength Evaluation And Transportation Behavior Of Preformed Particle Gel Using Screens And Tubes, Rajesh Sarma Challa
Masters Theses
"This research included a series of experiments, using screen models to evaluate the strength of swollen gel particles. It also includes the study of PPG propagation and extrusion behavior through tubes of various internal diameters. The effect of the particle gel swelling ratio (depending on brine concentration), flow rate; and mesh size on the gel injection pressure and injectivity were studied. The results show that gel injection pressure depends primarily on the swelling ratio and the mesh size. However, the injection pressure does not increase significantly with injection rates, behavior consistent with the real-time injection pressure and injection rate change …
Identifying Multiple Steady States In The Design Of Reactive Distillation Processes, Thomas Karl Mills
Identifying Multiple Steady States In The Design Of Reactive Distillation Processes, Thomas Karl Mills
Doctoral Dissertations
"Global homotopy continuation is used to identify multiple steady states in ideal reactive flash and reactive distillation systems involving a reaction of the form A+B [symbol for <--> C taking place in the liquid phase. The choice of specifications has an influence on the existence of multiple solutions for both the flash and the column. For the flash, specification of the heat input or withdrawal can give rise to multiplicities while specification of the split fraction does not. Specification of one internal energy balance variable and one external material balance variable does not produce multiplicities in the column; however, specification of …-->
Enhanced Photorefractivity In A Polymeric Composite Photosensitized With Modified Carbon Nanotubes, Naveen Kumar Lingam
Enhanced Photorefractivity In A Polymeric Composite Photosensitized With Modified Carbon Nanotubes, Naveen Kumar Lingam
Masters Theses
"This work involves the photosensitization of photorefractive polymeric composites through the inclusion of multiwalled and singlewalled carbon nanotubes grafted to poly(N-vinyl carbazole). The photorefractive nature of the holograms gratings was established using two-beam-coupling, yielding two-beam-coupling gain coefficients approaching 80 cm⁻¹. Degenerate-four-wave-mixing experiments exhibited diffraction efficiencies as high as 60% as well as over-modulation voltages as low as ~ 40 V/µm. These notable figures of merit indicate that the grafting of the various carbon nanotubes to the poly(N-vinyl carbazole) polymer resulted in enhanced photorefractive performance. The mechanism responsible for this enhancement in photorefractive performance is investigated using a variety of experimental …

Superconducting thin films of magnesium diboride were synthesized by a novel electroless plating process. Electroless plating shares many similarities to electroplating with the major difference being the absence of a continuous bias voltage. Significantly, this work represents the first investigation where electroless deposition has been used to prepare compounds, as opposed to the elemental metals considered in all previous studies. Magnesium Diboride is a recently discovered superconducting …
Molecular Modeling Of Energetic Materials And Chemical Warfare Agents, Nandhini Sokkalingam
Molecular Modeling Of Energetic Materials And Chemical Warfare Agents, Nandhini Sokkalingam
Wayne State University Dissertations
Contamination of military sites by energetic materials and chemical warfare agents is a growing problem. To avoid health hazards associated with these compounds, it is necessary to decontaminate or remediate the contaminated sites. Effective decontamination requires knowledge of environmental fate of contaminants and the appropriate remediation methodologies. While the fate of chemical warfare agents are well studied, the impact of certain energetic materials in the environment is relatively unknown. So the current focus is determining environmental fate of Insensitive Munitions (IM) which are energetic materials that have low shock sensitivity and high thermal stability and developing detection schemes for identifying …

Investigation Of Nitrogen Release During Coal Pyrolysis In An Oxy-Fuel Combustion Process, John M. Sowa, Kolbein K. Kolste, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
Three coals were studied in a flat flame burner (FFB) to determine nitrogen release during pyrolysis as a function of the temperature from 1600 to 1900 K in an oxy-fuel environment. The oxy-fuel environment was created by replacing the background N2 with CO2 in the FFB experiments. Both types of experiments were conducted under fuel-rich conditions, with no O2 present in the postflame gases. The oxy-fuel results were compared to previous results from FFB experiments in a N2 atmosphere. A bituminous coal showed no difference in mass and nitrogen release between the two environments. The sub-bituminous coal exhibited higher mass …

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at a constant heating rate is a popular technique for characterizing reaction behavior. Determination of kinetic coefficients from suchTGAdata has given rise to a large range of reported activation energies for similar samples. In general, rate coefficients are determined using either a linearized integral method or a derivative method. A new method incorporating several well-known techniques is presented that avoids the problems with the linearized techniques as they are generally used. This paper compares results from the new method with results using either the integral or derivative method. Mathematically generated data were used with known kinetic parameters …

Individual samples of high moisture fuels from the western and southern United States and humidified aspen excelsior were burned over a flat-flame burner at 987◦ ±12 C and 10±0.5 mol% O2. Time-dependent mass and temperature profiles of these samples were obtained and analysed. It was observed that significant amounts of moisture remained in the individual samples after ignition occurred. Temperature histories showed a plateau at 200◦–300 C at the leaf perimeter rather than at 100 C, with a plateau of 140 C for the leaf interior. Implications are that classical combustion models should be altered to reflect the behaviour of …

A Sub-Grid, Mixture–Fraction-Based Thermodynamic Equilibrium Model For Gas Phase Combustion In Firetec: Development And Results, Michael M. Clark, Thomas H. Fletcher, Rodman R. Linn
Faculty Publications
The chemical processes of gas phase combustion in wildland fires are complex and occur at length-scales that are not resolved in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of landscape-scale wildland fire. A new approach for modelling fire chemistry in HIGRAD/FIRETEC (a landscape-scale CFD wildfire model) applies a mixture–fraction model relying on thermodynamic chemical equilibrium to predict combustion flame temperatures and product species compositions. The mixture–fraction approach is common in combustor modelling applications. However, since individual flame sheets are not resolved in HIGRAD/FIRETEC, application of the mixture–fraction approach requires the development of a sub-grid model, which is based on the two assumptions …

Enhanced Vacuum Drying Through Improved Solvent Recovery, Reduced Process Cycle Times And Prediction Of Drying Duration, Diana Patricia Mesa Delgado
Theses
Drying of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals is often accomplished under vacuum conditions to enhance energy efficiency and to avoid overheating of thermo sensitive materials. This project aims to study vacuum drying operations to obtain a better understanding of this process so as to optimize drying performance. This project obtained industrial data collected from a range companies in Ireland.
Pharmaceutical companies started assessing processes and making changes to drying processes from 2004 onwards; these initiatives are due to economic pressures, environmental issues and the Process Analytical Technology (PAT) initiative launched by the FDA in 2004.
Vacuum drying has been used in …

Microalgae Harvesting By Flocculation With Polymer-Coated Magnetite Particles, Humayun Shariff
Masters Theses
"Although microalgae are considered to be one of the potentially significant feedstock for renewable biofuels, harvesting them efficiently from culture ponds has been a major hurdle. The conventional harvesting methods such as centrifugation and filtration are very time and labor intensive processes. Gravimetrical settlement with the aid of cationic flocculants is the most widely employed technique, but suffers from the difficulty in recovering microalgae floes. Furthermore, recycling of these flocculants after the harvesting process is not possible. Polymer-coated magnetite particles have been investigated for applications in various fields. This research has focused on the development of a novel and efficient …
Desulfurization And Tar Removal From Gasifier Effluents Using Mixed Rare Earth Oxides, Sumana Adusumilli
Desulfurization And Tar Removal From Gasifier Effluents Using Mixed Rare Earth Oxides, Sumana Adusumilli
LSU Master's Theses
Biomass gasification is a promising source of fuels. However, hydrogen sulphide, tars and other by-products must be removed from the raw gas because they deactivate downstream reforming and water gas shift catalysts. The goal of this project is to find the best REO combination for simultaneous tar cracking and desulfurization of gasifier effluents and to find the sorbents that are stable at high operating temperatures of gasifiers. Simultaneous tar cracking and H2S removal from a simulated gasifier effluent was tested using different rare earth mixed oxide (REO) catalysts/sorbents based on Ce/LaOx, Ce/La/MOx and Ce/La/M2Ox/Al2O3 where M is a transition metal …

Surfactant-Induced Flow Behavior Effects In Gas Condensate Reservoirs, Bikash Deep. Saikia
LSU Master's Theses
Natural gas, which accounts for a quarter of world’s energy, has been a major energy source because of its abundance and less impact on environment. With explorations at higher depth, pressure and temperature, the share of gas condensate reservoirs to global gas production is increasing. A unique production challenge associated with these reservoirs is the condensate blockage problem, which is the buildup of condensate liquid saturation around wellbore as a result of drawdown below dew point pressure. Mitigation of this problem requires in depth understanding of the multiphase flow of liquid and gas. Surfactants are well known in the literature …

Carbon capture and storage is one of the technologies that could help reduce CO2 concentration in the atmosphere while contributing to cutback of Greenhouse Gas emissions. Depleted oil and gas fields are favorable targets for CO2 storage because existing wells can be readily used as injection wells. However, a number of abandoned wells also serve as gateway to the reservoir which should be considered in the context of effective Carbon capture and storage. Wellbore cement is a very essential element in wellbore systems that serve as a barrier between different zones in the subsurface. The fractures inside wellbore cement sheath, …

An Experimental Study Of Surfactant Enhanced Waterflooding, Paulina Metili Mwangi
LSU Master's Theses
Surfactants have a variety of applications in the petroleum industry due to their remarkable ability to lower the oil-water interfacial tension and alter wettability. However, surfactant adsorption on rock surfaces has severely crippled this means of improving oil recovery due to the high cost associated with the large quantities of surfactant needed. A previous experimental study by Ayirala (2002) reported the development of mixed wettability using a nonionic surfactant. At this mixed-wet state he was able to recover about 94% of the original oil in place. The underlying motivation of this study was to achieve such high recoveries without using …
