Phospholipid Transport In Silicon Hydrogel Contact Lenses, Yibei Zhao Sep 2011

Phospholipid Transport In Silicon Hydrogel Contact Lenses, Yibei Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

Dry eye syndrome has been associated with the lack of phospholipids in the tear film, leading to disruption of the tear film and subsequent irritation. Characterization of the transport and release of phospholipids from a silicone hydrogel contact lens is required to assess the possible use of these lenses for phospholipid delivery to increase patient comfort. This thesis examines the use of silicone hydrogel contact lenses as phospholipid delivery devices. Contact lenses of silicone hydrogel composition were loaded with varying amounts of radiolabeled 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) from a solution of n-propanol. These lenses were eluted at 35°C into artificial …

Abstract

: Hydroxyapatite (HA) coating of hard tissue implants is widely employed for its biocompatible and osteoconductive properties as well as its improved mechanical properties. Plasma technology is the principal deposition process for coating HA on bioactive metals for this application. However, thermal decomposition of HA can occur during the plasma deposition process, resulting in coating variability in terms of purity, uniformity and crystallinity, which can lead to implant failure caused by aseptic loosening. In this study, CoBlast™, a novel blasting process has been used to successfully modify a titanium (V) substrate with a HA treatment using a dopant/abrasive regime. …

Faculty Publications

In this study, we present an artificial neural network (ANN) model that attempts to predict the dynamic release of doxorubicin (Dox) from P105 micelles under different ultrasonic power densities at 20 kHz. The goal is to utilize the developed ANN model in optimizing the ultrasound application to achieve a target drug release at the tumor site by controlling power density and ultrasound duration via an ANN-based model predictive control. The parameters of the controller are then tuned to achieve good reference signal tracking.

Robust Cns Regeneration After Complete Spinal Cord Transection Using Aligned Poly-L-Lactic Acid Microfibers, Andres Hurtado, Jared M. Cregg, Han B. Wang, Dane F. Wendell, Martin Oudega, Ryan J. Gilbert, John W. Mcdonald

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Following spinal cord injury, axons fail to regenerate without exogenous intervention. In this study we report that aligned microfiber-based grafts foster robust regeneration of vascularized CNS tissue. Film, random, and aligned microfiber-based conduits were grafted into a 3 mm thoracic rat spinal cord gap created by complete transection. Over the course of 4 weeks, microtopography presented by aligned or random poly- l-lactic acid microfibers facilitated infiltration of host tissue, and the initial 3 mm gap was closed by endogenous cell populations. This bulk tissue response was composed of regenerating axons accompanied by morphologically aligned astrocytes. Aligned fibers promoted long distance …

Theoretical Prediction Of Drug Release In Gi Tract From Spherical Matrix Systems, Naga Lakshmi Ramana Susarla Aug 2011

Theoretical Prediction Of Drug Release In Gi Tract From Spherical Matrix Systems, Naga Lakshmi Ramana Susarla

Dissertations

The significance of controlled release drug delivery systems (CRDDS) lies in their ability to deliver the drug at a steady rate thus reducing the dosage interval and providing a prolonged pharmacodynamic effect. But despite the steadily increasing practical importance of these devices, little is known regarding their underlying drug release mechanisms. Mathematical modeling of these drug delivery systems could help us understand the underlying mass transport mechanisms involved in the control of drug release. Mathematical modeling also plays an important role in providing us with valuable information such as the amount of drug released during a certain period of time …

Multifunctional Reactive Nanocomposite Materials, Demitrios Stamatis Aug 2011

Multifunctional Reactive Nanocomposite Materials, Demitrios Stamatis

Dissertations

Many multifunctional nanocomposite materials have been developed for use in propellants, explosives, pyrotechnics, and reactive structures. These materials exhibit high reaction rates due to their developed reaction interfacial area. Two applications addressed in this work include nanocomposite powders prepared by arrested reactive milling (ARM) for burn rate modifiers and reactive structures. In burn rate modifiers, addition of reactive nanocomposite powders to aluminized propellants increases the burn rate of aluminum and thus the overall reaction rate of an energetic formulation. Replacing only a small fraction of aluminum by 8Al•MoO3 and 2B•Ti nanocomposite powders enhances the reaction rate with little change …

Effects Of Non-Planar Distortions In Porphyrin Compounds On Their Properties And Functionality, Raid Haddad Aug 2011

Effects Of Non-Planar Distortions In Porphyrin Compounds On Their Properties And Functionality, Raid Haddad

Porphyrins and related compounds are ubiquitous in nature, performing diverse functions including solar energy transduction, electron transport, molecular transport and storage, and catalysis. Due to their unique photophysical and chemical properties, they are excellent candidates for application as photosensitizers, catalysts, photocatalysts, molecular electronics and opto-electronics. Several properties of porphyrins are sensitive to small variations in their structure, and this dissertation investigates the effects of out-of-plane distortions of the macrocycle on optical properties, reactivity to axial ligands, and substituent rotation. The structure-functions relationships are examined using molecular simulations, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, resonance Raman spectroscopy, and normal-coordinate structural decomposition (NSD) analysis of …

Novel Routes For Synthesis Of Pd Nanoparticles And Faceted Zno Supports For Heterogeneous Catalysts, Patrick David Burton Aug 2011

Novel Routes For Synthesis Of Pd Nanoparticles And Faceted Zno Supports For Heterogeneous Catalysts, Patrick David Burton

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Alcohol steam reforming is a promising source of hydrogen as fuel, and could be improved by the use of an optimal catalyst. The methanol steam reforming reaction, CH3OH+H2O --> 3H2+CO2 frequently conducted by means of a Cu/ZnO catalyst. Unfortunately, this catalyst deactivates quickly and is pyrophoric. Pd catalysts are much more stable, but reactions using these catalyst follow the decomposition pathway, CH3OH --> 2H2+CO. PdZn alloys can achieve the desired selectivity, and have been noted to form under reaction conditions from Pd/ZnO heterogeneous catalysts. In the present work, careful synthesis techniques of specific support and nanoparticle surfaces have been developed …

Polymerization In Emulsion Microdroplet Reactors, Nick J. Carroll Aug 2011

Polymerization In Emulsion Microdroplet Reactors, Nick J. Carroll

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The goal of this research project is to utilize emulsion droplets as chemical reactors for execution of complex polymerization chemistries to develop unique and functional particle materials. Emulsions are dispersions of immiscible fluids where one fluid usually exists in the form of drops. Not surprisingly, if a liquid-to-solid chemical reaction proceeds to completion within these drops, the resultant solid particles will possess the shape and relative size distribution of the drops. The two immiscible liquid phases required for emulsion polymerization provide unique and complex chemical and physical environments suitable for the engineering of novel materials. The development of novel non-ionic …

Lengner, Tripti Gaur, Yang Lou, Sadiq Hussain, Marci D. Jones, Brent Borodic, Jennifer L. Colby, Heather A. Steinman, Andre J. Van Wijnen, Janet L. Stein, Stephen N. Jones, Gary S. Stein, Jane B. Lian

School of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

The Runt-related transcription factor, Runx2, is essential for osteogenesis and is controlled by both distal (P1) and proximal (P2) promoters. To understand Runx2 function requires determination of the spatiotemporal activity of P1 and P2 to Runx2 protein production. We generated a mouse model in which the P1-derived transcript was replaced with a lacZ reporter allele, resulting in loss of P1-derived protein while simultaneously allowing discrimination between the activities of the two promoters. Loss of P1-driven expression causes developmental defects with cleidocranial dysplasia-like syndromes that persist in the postnatal skeleton. P1 activity is robust in preosteogenic mesenchyme and at the onset …

Thermal Model For Lithium Ion Battery Pack With Mixed Parallel And Series Configuration, Meng Guo, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

In this work, a mathematical thermal model for lithium ion battery pack with specific configuration was developed by coupling the single particle model and energy balance equation with basic circuit constraints. The temperature variation at different parts of the battery pack was considered in charge/discharge operations, and the dependency of cell parameters on temperature were taken into account. The model was validated by comparing the simulated current, voltage, and temperature profiles with experimental data. Case studies such as battery balancing and circuit interruption were also performed and discussed.

Roles Of Particle-Wall And Particle-Particle Interactions In Highly Confined Suspensions Of Spherical Particles Being Sheared At Low Reynolds Numbers, Ashok S. Sangani, Andreas Acrivos, Philippe Peyla Aug 2011

Roles Of Particle-Wall And Particle-Particle Interactions In Highly Confined Suspensions Of Spherical Particles Being Sheared At Low Reynolds Numbers, Ashok S. Sangani, Andreas Acrivos, Philippe Peyla

Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship

The roles of particle-wall and particle-particle interactions are examined for suspensions of spherical particles in a viscous fluid being confined and sheared at low Reynolds numbers by two parallel walls moving with equal but opposite velocities. Both particle-wall and particle-particle interactions are shown to decrease the rotational velocity of the spheres, so that in the limit of vanishingly small gaps between the spheres and the walls, the spheres acquire a rotational slip relative to the walls. The presence of the walls also increases the particle stresslet and, therefore, the total viscous dissipation. In the limit of vanishingly small gaps, the …

Electrochemical Synthesis Of Single Crystal Metal Nanowires, Nan Li

Master's Theses

Electrodeposition is an efficient and economical approach for template synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructured materials. Based on the porous membranes as templates during electrodeposition, metallic nanowires, nanorods, and nanotubes can overcome the geometrical restrictions to be inserted into the nanometric recesses with both diameter and length well controlled by tuning the size and thickness of the templates.

In this work, the morphology, growth rate and texture of copper nanowires prepared with templates were investigated by the controlled parameters in various experiments. Cu nanowire arrays with preferential orientations can be successfully synthesized into the Anodic Aluminum Oxide (AAO) templates with optimized …

Effects On Hydrogen Adsorption And Activation On Platinum In A Fuel Cell Catalyst, Jack Zhang Aug 2011

Effects On Hydrogen Adsorption And Activation On Platinum In A Fuel Cell Catalyst, Jack Zhang

All Dissertations

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells are a highly efficient source of power generation that is needed to sustain the energy demands of today's more environmentally conscience society. However, the presence of impurities in the hydrogen fuel stream, such as CO, H2S, and NH3 from the steam reforming/partial oxidation of hydrocarbons/methanol, can severely poison the Pt electrocatalyst present in the fuel cell electrode causing degradation in the fuel cell performance. To counter these poisoning effects, fuel cell manufacturers are forced to use higher Pt loadings, which dramatically increases material costs and prevents the successful commercialization of the technology. …

Expression And Characterization Of Protein Chimera With Embedded Activated Protein C Generation, Minjeong Schneider Aug 2011

Expression And Characterization Of Protein Chimera With Embedded Activated Protein C Generation, Minjeong Schneider

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Increasing demand of medical implants has lead researchers to develop biomaterial surfaces that offer improved performance and lower thrombogenecity. There have been attempts to model biomaterial surfaces after the native endothelium as it represents an optimal non-thrombotic surface. Typically, when biomaterials are contacted with blood, they often invoke the activation of clotting cascades. Thus, to overcome surface mediated thrombotic events, proteins and molecules with anticoagulant attributes of the endothelium have been immobilized onto biomaterial surfaces. Protein C (PC) plays a main role in blood coagulation and acts as an anticoagulant when it is converted into activated protein C (APC). Activation …

Oxygenate Synthesis During Co Hydrogenation On Cocuzno- Based Catalysts, Yu-Tung Tsai Aug 2011

Oxygenate Synthesis During Co Hydrogenation On Cocuzno- Based Catalysts, Yu-Tung Tsai

All Dissertations

The research of catalytic synthesis of methanol and other higher alcohols from CO hydrogenation has received great attention since 1980s. The focus of this research is to establish a better fundamental insight into heterogeneous metal catalysts for oxygenate (especially alcohol) synthesis by CO hydrogenation.
Co-based catalysts have been reported widely as the high-performance Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) catalysts. The solid base, hydrotalcite (HT), using as a support for Co catalysts resulted in higher activity for CO hydrogenation comparing to other supports (pre-calcined hydrotalcite, MgO and Al2O3). The activities of Co/HT reduced at different reduction temperatures (300-600oC) were …

Controlled Release Of 6-Aminonicotinamide From Aligned, Electrospun Fibers Alters Astrocyte Metabolism And Dorsal Root Ganglia Neurite Outgrowth, Nicholas J. Schaub, Ryan J. Gilbert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Following central nervous system (CNS) injury, activated astrocytes form a glial scar that inhibits the migration of axons ultimately leading to regeneration failure. Biomaterials developed for CNS repair can provide local delivery of therapeutics and/or guidance mechanisms to encourage cell migration into damaged regions of the brain or spinal cord. Electro spun fibers are a promising type of biomaterial for CNS injury since these fibers can direct cellular and axonal migration while slowly delivering therapy to the injury site. In this study, it was hypothesized that inclusion of an anti-metabolite, 6-aminonicotinamide (6AN), within poly-l-lactic acid electro spun fibers could attenuate …
