The Relation Of Heat Transfer To Mass Transfer In Vaporization Through Porous Membranes., Chung-Liang Yeh Jan 1967

The Relation Of Heat Transfer To Mass Transfer In Vaporization Through Porous Membranes., Chung-Liang Yeh

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to study the mass and heat transport phenomena through porous, water-repellent membranes. The investigation concerned the rate of vaporization of salt water at a porous membrane surface, mass transfer of vapor through the pores of the membrane, condensation of vapor on the other surface of the membrane in contact with a coolant (fresh water), and the undesired heat transfer by conduction through the membrane. The water-repellent membrane separated the two liquid phases by surface tension forces and provided a vapor phase in its pores. Membranes made of fiberglass and Teflon had been found suitable …

Mass Transfer From A Torus Shaped Body, Kamalesh Suryakant Desai Jan 1967

Mass Transfer From A Torus Shaped Body, Kamalesh Suryakant Desai

Masters Theses

"A mathematical model for molecular diffusion in a torus was derived. Handlos and Baron have assumed a system of tori in their eddy diffusion model for liquid-liquid extraction from droplets. However, the effect of torus curvature was neglected in their studies. Since they assumed the torus could be represented by an infinite cylinder. In this study, the effect of torus curvature was considered on the concentration profile and the fraction of the solute extracted. The partial differential equation describing the model consists of three independent variables, and a finite difference technique was employed for the solution of the mathematical model. …

A Kinetic Study Of Ti⁺³ Oxidation To Ti⁺⁴ In Hydrofluoric Acid Solutions, Kuo-Shein Shen Jan 1967

A Kinetic Study Of Ti⁺³ Oxidation To Ti⁺⁴ In Hydrofluoric Acid Solutions, Kuo-Shein Shen

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the oxidation rate of Ti⁺³ to Ti⁺⁴ in hydrofluoric acid solutions in the absence of air. The concentration of hydrofluoric acid was varied from 0.25 to 2.00 M and the concentration of titanium from 0.05 to 0.50 M. The temperature was controlled at 25⁰C. The reaction rate was relatively slow. In most instances, less than 50 percent of the Ti⁺³ was oxidized during a period of 100 hours"--Abstract, page vii.

Study Of Mass Transfer Through Porous Water-Repellent Membrane As A Function Of Membrane Thickness And Rates Of Heating, Yalamanchili Babu Rao Jan 1967

Study Of Mass Transfer Through Porous Water-Repellent Membrane As A Function Of Membrane Thickness And Rates Of Heating, Yalamanchili Babu Rao

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to study the mass transfer coefficients through porous water-repellent membranes, and their dependence on membrane thickness and rates of heating, and to compare experimental correlations with theoretically based equations. The membranes used during the experimental work were made of glass fiber treated with Teflon suspension and aluminum sulfate. The mechanism involves evaporation and condensation on opposite sides of a vapor-filled porous membrane. Salt water evaporates from one interface of a non-wettable, porous membrane, diffuses through the vapor filled pores, and condenses to fresh water at the other interface of the membrane. This transfer may …

Modifications have been incorporated in the last two techniques for (a) constant volume injection of produced gas, (b) the presence of a gas cap, (c) gas-cap injection of produced gas volumes, (d) varying water encroachment and production, and/or, (e) varying sweep efficiencies …

Molecular Diffusion In Polymer Solutions By A Microinterferometric Method, Surendra V. Desai Jan 1967

Molecular Diffusion In Polymer Solutions By A Microinterferometric Method, Surendra V. Desai

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation of molecular diffusion in aqueous polymer solutions was to study the effect of solute concentration on the differential diffusion coefficient and also to study the effect of polymer concentration on the mean integral diffusion coefficient. For this purpose a microinterferometric method was used. Two non-ionic, water soluble polymers, Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and Carboxypolymethylene (Carbopol), were used in the study with D-Glucose as a solute.

The differential diffusion coefficient was found to increase with increases in solute concentration in all cases. For CMC, the integral diffusion coefficient at first decreased with increasing polymer concentration but became constant …

Some Aspects Of Transient Flow Behavior In Artesian Aquifers And In Hydrocarbon Reservoirs Surrounded By Artesian Aquifers, Alton John Nute Jan 1967

Some Aspects Of Transient Flow Behavior In Artesian Aquifers And In Hydrocarbon Reservoirs Surrounded By Artesian Aquifers, Alton John Nute

Masters Theses

"An analysis of the principal theories concerning the transient movement of water in artesian aquifers and from artesian aquifers into hydrocarbon reservoirs is presented. Various analytical methods which can be applied to depict the behavior of these two types of aquifer systems are compared.

Most aquifer studies to date have been based upon the Thesis Non-Equilibrium Formula. This equation has been used to calculate the coefficients of storage and transmissibility for aquifers; to evaluate well performance; and to investigate problems concerning recharge, movement, and discharge of aquifer water. However, one problem which still remains is that of accurately predicting the …

Hot‐Film Anemometry Measurements Of Turbulence In Pipe Flow: Organic Solvents, Gary Kent Patterson, Jacques L. Zakin Jan 1967

Hot‐Film Anemometry Measurements Of Turbulence In Pipe Flow: Organic Solvents, Gary Kent Patterson, Jacques L. Zakin

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Longitudinal turbulence intensities, autocorrelations, and energy spectra have been measured in the flow of toluene, benzene, and cyclohexane in smooth, round 1‐ and 2‐in. I.D. tubes. These measurements were made with a constant‐temperature hot‐film anemometer and covered radial positions from the center to r/a = 0.85 in the 2‐in. tube and to r/a = 0.75 in the 1‐in. tube. The turbulence intensity data were found to be similar to those obtained for air in a 10‐in. pipe by Laufer. A slight diameter effect was observed, the intensities in the 1‐in. tube being slightly lower than those in the 2‐in. tube …

The Mechanism Of The Electrooxidation Of Acetylene On Gold, James W. Johnson, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James Jan 1967

The Mechanism Of The Electrooxidation Of Acetylene On Gold, James W. Johnson, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Acetylene has been oxidized anodically in aqueous solutions at 80 °C on gold electrodes. It was found that the partial oxidation to CO2 was accompanied by a polymer formation. Effects of potential, acetylene partial pressure, pH, and temperature on the rate (current) were measured. A discontinuity in the Tafel curves was noted that indicated a change in the reaction mechanism with potential. The discontinuity was also pH dependent. A mechanism involving the discharge of H2O and/or OH− has been proposed that is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. All rights reserved.

A Structural Investigation Of Bismuth Ferrate And The Bifeo₃-Pbzro₃-Pbtio₃ Ternary System, Gary D. Achenbach Jan 1967

A Structural Investigation Of Bismuth Ferrate And The Bifeo₃-Pbzro₃-Pbtio₃ Ternary System, Gary D. Achenbach

Doctoral Dissertations

"Solid state reaction of Bi2O3 · Fe2O3 mixtures was shown to yield impure bismuth ferrate, BiFeO3, containing Bi2Fe4O9 and residual Bi2O3; this places the results of much of the literature based on BiFeO3 prepared by this technique in suspect. Single phase polycrystalline BiFeO3 was prepared by multiple nitric acid leaching of sintered samples which contained excess Bi2O3 to prevent the formation of Bi2Fe4O9 during sintering. X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data indicate that …

A Study Of Surface And Geometric Effects On The Nucleate Boiling Of Liquid Nitrogen And Liquid Argon From Atmospheric To The Critical Pressure, Calvin Benson Cobb Jan 1967

A Study Of Surface And Geometric Effects On The Nucleate Boiling Of Liquid Nitrogen And Liquid Argon From Atmospheric To The Critical Pressure, Calvin Benson Cobb

Doctoral Dissertations

"A maximum heat flux correlation was derived for corresponding states liquids and subsequently verified by the data collected in this study as well as data presented in the literature. By applying this correlation, one can predict maximum heat flux values at high pressures from maximum heat flux values measured at low pressures; however, to apply the correlation it is necessary to have at least one maximum heat flux value and the saturation temperature at which it was determined.

Contrary to existing correlations, it is shown that for any nucleate boiling heat transfer correlation to be truly general, it must include …

Kinetics Of The Lactic Acid-Butyl Alcohol Esterification Reaction, Joel Howard Kaplan Jun 1966

Kinetics Of The Lactic Acid-Butyl Alcohol Esterification Reaction, Joel Howard Kaplan

Dissertations

Kinetic and equilibrium data for the esterification reaction of monomeric lactic acid with normal butanol were determined in a series of experiments utilizing a batch stirred tank reactor. The variables studied were temperature and catalyst concentration. The kinetic data were successfully represented by the integrated equation for a second order reversible reaction.

Rate constants were obtained at three temperature levels and four catalyst levels. The observed rate constants in the catalytic reaction were linearly correlated with catalyst concentration and also satisfied the Arrhenius criterion. The activation energy and frequency factor for the uncatalyzed reaction were determined to be 13,190 calories …

Kinetics Of Hydrolysis Of Butyl Lactate, Peter Pommers Jun 1966

Kinetics Of Hydrolysis Of Butyl Lactate, Peter Pommers

Theses

The acid catalyzed hydrolysis of butyl lactate with water, using lactic acid to achieve a homogeneous solution, was studied.

Experiments at various temperatures were run under catalyzed and uncatalyzed conditions. The course of the hydrolysis was followed by titrating the acidity of the reaction mass at certain time intervals. From the results of these titrations and from the experimental determinations of the equilibrium constant, the reaction velocity constants for the hydrolysis of butyl lactate were calculated. The velocity constants were found to range from .8 x 10-5 to 25 x 10-5 liters/ (g-mole)(min), depending upon the reaction temperature …

Vapor-Liquid Equilibria System : Chloroform, Carbon Tetrachloride, Isopropanol, Barnet H. Bursack Jun 1966

Vapor-Liquid Equilibria System : Chloroform, Carbon Tetrachloride, Isopropanol, Barnet H. Bursack

Theses

A study was made of the vapor-liquid equilibria of the ternary system: Chloroform (CHCl3), Carbon Tetra-chloride (CCl4) and Isopropanol (C3H8O). An Othmer still was used for the equilibria determination. Refractive index and density measurements were used to determine liquid and vapor compositions. A comparison between experimental and theoretical values was made using the Margules 3-suffix ternary equations for the correlation.

It was necessary to investigate the vapor-liquid equilibria of each of the three binary systems to evaluate the techniques and equipment used and obtain new data. Only one previous investigation of the …

The Kinetics Of A Heterogeneous System, Francisco H. Fernandez-Ortega, Gonzalo D. Milian Jun 1966

The Kinetics Of A Heterogeneous System, Francisco H. Fernandez-Ortega, Gonzalo D. Milian

Theses

The reaction between an acidic potassium dichromate solution and metallic copper has been studied at 25.0°C under batch quiescent and continuous flow conditions.

The effect of time of reaction, reactor diameter, acid, dichromate, and salt concentration upon reaction rate have been investigated for a quiescent batch reactor and found to influence the Reaction Velocity Constant of the system. As the reaction progressed, the Reaction Velocity Constant was observed to decrease. An increase in reactor diameter resulted in a Reaction Velocity Constant increase. Small increments in the dichromate concentration produced a decrease in the Reaction Velocity Constant. A maximum point of …

Effects Of Non-Constant Molal Flow On Distillation Plate Separation, Joseph Lawrence Niedzwiecki, W. Weissman Jun 1966

Effects Of Non-Constant Molal Flow On Distillation Plate Separation, Joseph Lawrence Niedzwiecki, W. Weissman

Theses

This thesis presents new equations for predicting degree of separation on a distillation plate, recognizing non-constant molal flow effects. A FORTRAN program is included for solving the new equations. Experimental runs were made for comparison to theoretical predictions.

First an equation is derived for predicting separation at a point on a distillation plate. The derivation is analogous to Murphree's point efficiency equation except that the effects of flow between phases are included by applying the Colburn-Drew theory. Finally, an overall plate separation equation is derived analogous to the A.I.Ch.E. eddy diffusion model for Murphree plate efficiency, except that the rate …

Current-Potential Effects Of Trace Impurities In Manganese Electrowinning-Ii, Bipinchandra Govindlal Shah Jun 1966

Current-Potential Effects Of Trace Impurities In Manganese Electrowinning-Ii, Bipinchandra Govindlal Shah

Theses

The effects of trace non-metallic impurities, found in manganese electrowinning solutions, on cathode current-potential curves have been investigated. Five impurities, e.g., Sulfur-dioxide, Ammonium Sulphide, Urea, Thiourea, and Gelatine were studied.

In the first phase of the study the effect of individual impurity on the standard polarization curve was determined for a range of concentration. It was observed that these impurities did not affect the standard polarization curve.

In the second phase the above observation was confirmed by using cobalt as metallic impurity in addition to the non-metallic impurity. A marked effect on the standard polarization curve was observed due to …

Fugacity And Activity Coefficients For The N-Butane-Nitrogen System, Richard E. Walter Jun 1966

Fugacity And Activity Coefficients For The N-Butane-Nitrogen System, Richard E. Walter

Theses

Fugacity and activity coefficients were calculated for the nitrogen-n-butane system at 310°, 340°, 370°, and 400°F. in 100 atmosphere pressure intervals from 100 to 700 atmospheres for the pure components and mixtures of 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 mol% n-butane. Calculations were based on a method proposed by Van Ness. This calculation procedure combines an analytical solution utilizing the Redlich and Kwong equation of state with a graphically obtained correction factor.

Diffusion Coefficients In Alcohol - Water, Frank Gustav Meier Jun 1966

Diffusion Coefficients In Alcohol - Water, Frank Gustav Meier

Theses

Diffusion coefficients of potassium, calcium and magnesium ions in ethanol-water solutions have been determined at 20°C. by means of Dowex 50W-X8 under experimental conditions that indicate that the transfer rate is controlled by film diffusion.

This investigation presents, for the first time, diffusion coefficients for these ions in ethanol solutions at concentrations below 0.01N.

The combined effect of viscosity and dielectric Constant of the solvent on the diffusion coefficient of Ions is demonstrated.

Hydrotropic Extraction Of Hydrocarbon Mixtures, Michael Jay Ram May 1966

Hydrotropic Extraction Of Hydrocarbon Mixtures, Michael Jay Ram

Dissertations

The solubilities at 25°C of selected aromatics and straight chain alkanes in hydrotropic solutions of sodium xylene sulfonate and sodium cymene sulfonate were studied. The results of this investigation are shown on distribution diagrams relating the solubilities of alkane and aromatic in each phase.

Two methods were investigated to predict the experimentally determined solubilities. The semi-empirical solubility parameter approach resulted in answers that were extremely low. A purely theoretical approach involves the calculation of dispersion forces between molecules. An equation for predicting solubilities has been derived so that it is applicable to four component systems. This method results in values …

A Systematic Evaluation Of Alternate Chemical Routes, Arthur H. Bobis Apr 1966

A Systematic Evaluation Of Alternate Chemical Routes, Arthur H. Bobis

Dissertations

A systematic method for selecting from among alternative routes for chemical synthesis is developed and presented. Consideration is given not only to making the best decision, but of reaching that decision with a minimum of experiments.

A method is developed whereby the calculated differences in process cost due to variations in the levels of such responses as chemical yield, usage and recovery are displayed graphically. Such a representation by indicating the potential worth of any experiment focuses attention on those parts of the synthesis which have an economic bearing on the ultimate process cost.

The probability of achieving a particular …

Conversion Of Parahydrogen To Orthohydrogen, George A. Winkler Mar 1966

Conversion Of Parahydrogen To Orthohydrogen, George A. Winkler

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Heisenberg (53) and Hund (57) postulated the existence of two modifications of hydrogen. This occurred as a result of Heisenberg's previous explanation of the existence for orthohelium and parahelium using quantum theory. From analogous considerations, he and Hund asserted that hydrogen was a mixture of two gases. Dennison (28) applied their theories to explain the falling off of the rotational specific heat of hydrogen. This had been observed by Eucken (34) in 1912. In 1928, Giaque and Johnston (45) held gaseous hydrogen at 85°K for six months. On liquefaction they found a detectable difference in vapor pressure. They stated that …

Vapor Liquid Equilibria Of The Isopropanol-Isopropylacetate-Water System, Amin Zavosh Feb 1966

Vapor Liquid Equilibria Of The Isopropanol-Isopropylacetate-Water System, Amin Zavosh

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The separation of isopropylacetate from a ternary mixture of isopropanol, isopropylacetate and water by azeotropic distillation requires reliable and thermodynamically consistent vapor-liquid equilibrium data. By using a single experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium datum point for each of the related binaries of the above system, it is possible to determine the binary constants of some of the integrated forms of the Gibbs-Duhem equation such as the Van Laar or Margules equation. The binary constants can be used in the ternary forms of the above equations and in conjunction with the definition of activity coefficient to generate approximate vapor-liquid equilibrium data over the …

Further Studies Of The Catalytic Oxidation Of Ortho-Xylene To Phthalic Anhydride Using A Fluidized Bed Reactor., Richard Shih-Chun Chu Jan 1966

Further Studies Of The Catalytic Oxidation Of Ortho-Xylene To Phthalic Anhydride Using A Fluidized Bed Reactor., Richard Shih-Chun Chu

Masters Theses

"This investigation was conducted to further study the vapor-phase oxidation or o-xylene to phthalic anhydride in a fluidized bed catalytic reactor. Parameters investigated during the study were temperature, catalyst volume, and catalyst activated by use or different promoters. Two different vanadium pentoxide catalysts were used. One was a new catalyst(Catalyst I) supported on a silica base and diluted with potassium sulfate. The other catalyst(Catalyst II) was similar to the first one except that it had been used in a commercial fixed bed reactor operated by the Monsanto Company, St. Louis, Missouri, using naphthalene as a reed material. It had been …

Nucleate-Boiling Heat Transfer To Water At Atmospheric Pressure, H. D. Chevali Jan 1966

Nucleate-Boiling Heat Transfer To Water At Atmospheric Pressure, H. D. Chevali

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the hysteresis effect, the effect of micro-roughness and orientation of the heat-transfer surface, and the effect of infra-red-radiation-treated heat-transfer surfaces on the nucleate-boiling curve.

It has been observed that there exists no hysteresis effect for water boiling from a cylindrical copper surface in the nucleate-boiling region over the range studied. The nucleate-boiling curve has been found to be independent of micro-roughness and orientation of the heat-transfer surface. There was no detectable change in the nucleate-boiling characteristics of the heat-transfer surface when the surface was treated with infra-red radiation"--Abstract, page ii.

Electrodialysis Of Tomato Juice, Raghunath R. Khetan Jan 1966

Electrodialysis Of Tomato Juice, Raghunath R. Khetan

Masters Theses

"Thermal decarboxylation of carboxylic acids has been helpful in illustrating some fundamentals of reaction kinetics in solution. It has been important in formulation of the theory of unimolecular reactions. It is also used frequently in the synthetical methods of organic chemistry.

In a recent study of the anodic oxidation of malonic acid in sulfuric acid at 80⁰C using a platinum anode, the interpretation of some results was impossible due to the spontaneous decomposition of the malonic acid. As no information is available in the literature about decomposition rates of malonic acid in sulfuric acid at the concentrations used, it was …

The Anodic Behavior Of Zinc In Aqueous Salt Solutions, Yun-Chung Sun Jan 1966

The Anodic Behavior Of Zinc In Aqueous Salt Solutions, Yun-Chung Sun

Doctoral Dissertations

"The increasing demand for protective metals as coatings and non-corrosive alloys has caused extensive research on the fundamental behavior of metals in corrosive media. The problem of controlling the destructive process of metallic corrosion still exists and becomes urgent in this space age. The desirablity of metals such as beryllium, magnesium, and zinc in air frame and space structural units, because of their high strength to weight ratio, has been responsible for the considerable progress in their technology in recent years.

The basic mechanism of the anodic dissolution of metals such as zinc, cadmium, and magnesium in salt solution is …

Nucleate Boiling Heat Transfer To Liquid Nitrogen At Atmospheric Pressure, Satish R. Parikh Jan 1966

Nucleate Boiling Heat Transfer To Liquid Nitrogen At Atmospheric Pressure, Satish R. Parikh

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to study the effect of micro-roughness, a thin layer of oil, and infra-red radiations on the cylindrical heat transfer surface of copper, in liquid nitrogen and at atmospheric pressure during nucleate boiling. An attempt was made to find any possible effect of orientation of the heat transfer element on nucleate boiling. A number of different runs were taken with different degrees of roughness, and different orientation positions. Nucleate boiling has been found to be nearly independent of the heat transfer surface roughness and of orientation while strongly dependent on the chemical nature of the …
