Liquid-Liquid Extraction With First Order Reaction : A Mathematical Simulation, Alan Wayne Smith Jan 1973

Liquid-Liquid Extraction With First Order Reaction : A Mathematical Simulation, Alan Wayne Smith

Masters Theses

"Models for mass transfer to droplets based on film theory with first order chemical reaction are proposed and compared with experimental data. The experimental extraction data is available from the work by Andoe (1968). The physical system used was benzene as a continuous phase and water as a dispersed phase with 2-chloro-2- methyl propane the solute diffusing into and reacting in the droplet. This system had a high interfacial tension (31.0 dynes/cm) and droplet Reynolds numbers ranging from 600 to 1345.

The predicted results of this work are in the form of the dimensionless total mass transferred to the droplet …

Heat Transfer Of A High Prandtl Number Oil In Laminar Flow, John Robert Lee Iii Jan 1973

Heat Transfer Of A High Prandtl Number Oil In Laminar Flow, John Robert Lee Iii

Masters Theses

"A numerical model was developed for the purpose of studying the flow and heat transfer of a hypothetical oil in laminar flow within a horizontal pipeline. Free convection, work of compression, and axial conduction were neglected, but the fluid properties - i.e., density, specific heat, viscosity, and thermal conductivity - were allowed to vary and the effect of viscous dissipation was included in the analysis of the system.

The mathematical forms of the momentum, continuity, and energy equations require that numerical solutions be obtained with a digital computer. These numerical approximations of the partial differential equations are presented and the …

Quantitative Overdesign By Stochastic Simulation, Raymond A. Freeman Jan 1973

Quantitative Overdesign By Stochastic Simulation, Raymond A. Freeman

Masters Theses

"The determination of overdesign, or safety, factors for industrial processes is an art acquired by the engineer through experience. In general, safety factors are increased as the uncertainty of the process variable increases; a procedure that can be expensive if safety factors are specified too small or too large. A single release of harmful substances from pollution control installations may cause irreparable damage. Likewise, the production of an off specification product by a chemical process costs money and resources. These facilities must often be designed for widely fluctuating flow rates, compositions, temperatures, and etc. Consequently, the selection of the proper …

Disposal Of Cattle Feedlot Wastes By Anaerobic Digestion, Eric Bayard Rapp Jan 1973

Disposal Of Cattle Feedlot Wastes By Anaerobic Digestion, Eric Bayard Rapp

Masters Theses

"Disposal of animal waste represents a severe environmental problem, particularly in areas such as cattle feedlots where livestock are concentrated. Animal waste can be converted to carbon dioxide and methane by the autocatalytic process of anaerobic fermentation. A scheme, based upon this process, for the disposal of the waste from two different size feedlots is presented. The design of this process is based on kinetic data from the literature which are fitted to a kinetic model including diffusional resistances. Economic calculations based upon available cost data are made to determine the profitability of the process. Economic evaluations indicate that this …

Relative Volatility In The System 1-Butene - N-Butane, Steven Lewis Walker Jan 1973

Relative Volatility In The System 1-Butene - N-Butane, Steven Lewis Walker

Masters Theses

"An apparatus suitable for the rapid collection of P-x data at constant T is described. Isothermal P-x data at 40, 70, 100, 130, and 160 degrees Fahrenheit at the extremes of the composition range for the 1-butene - n-butane system are presented as a demonstration of the suitability of the device for its intended purpose. Limiting values of the relative volatility for the binary are presented. The relative volatilities were calculated using limiting forms of the general coexistence equation which are given in the literature. Several recommendations are given for improvements of the equipment and experimental technique"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of Medium And High Internal Phase Ratio Water/Polymer Emulsions, Kenneth J. Lissant, Kenneth G. Mayhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Medium and high internal phase ratio water/polymer emulsions were studied utilizing scanning electron microscope techniques. Results are reported for the geometry and distribution of droplets for water/polymer ratios from 1 1 to 9 1. Electron micrographs confirm those models which predicts polyhedral droplet formation at high internal phase ratios. © 1973.

A Technique For Improving Material Balance Accuracy In Reservoir Simulation Models, A. R. Merchant, Marion D. Arnold, A. Herbert Harvey Jan 1973

A Technique For Improving Material Balance Accuracy In Reservoir Simulation Models, A. R. Merchant, Marion D. Arnold, A. Herbert Harvey

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One criterion for determining the precision of pressures calculated by a simulation model is the accuracy of the material balance. A high degree of precision in the calculated pressures is a necessary but not sufficient condition for elimination of significant errors in the prediction of fluid migration in the reservoir. A new procedure, called error matrix technique, has been developed for reduction of material balance errors. This reduction is accomplished by adjusting potential gradients at every grid point in the simulation model so that the material balance is accurately maintained. Performance of a hypothetical oil reservoir was simulated both by …

Stratigraphic Relations Of Members Of The Needles Range Formation At Type Localities In Southwestern Utah, M. G. Best, R. T. Shuey, C. F. Caskey, S. Kerry Grant Jan 1973

Stratigraphic Relations Of Members Of The Needles Range Formation At Type Localities In Southwestern Utah, M. G. Best, R. T. Shuey, C. F. Caskey, S. Kerry Grant

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Needles Range Formation is one of the most extensive of the middle Tertiary ash-flow sheets in the Great Basin of Nevada and western Utah. The original definition of the formation by Mackin (1960) named two members and mentioned three type localities. Our recent studies have shown that this published information now requires revision. To provide a firm basis for stratigraphic studies of the Needles Range Formation, this paper presents geologic maps, measured sections, and paleomagnetic data for three type localities in southwestern Utah. These include the northern Needles Range and Wah Wah Springs localities previously mentioned by Mackin, plus …

Nucleate Boiling From Polymer Coated Surfaces., David Franklin Warner Jan 1973

Nucleate Boiling From Polymer Coated Surfaces., David Franklin Warner

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study consisted of an examination of both the effects of nucleate boiling on polymer coated surfaces and the effects of the polymer coated surfaces on the nucleate boiling curve. The nucleate boiling curve (the curve resulting from plotting heat transferred per unit area versus the temperature difference between the boiling surface and the liquid pool) of the polymer coated surfaces were compared with the nucleate boiling curve of gold-plated surfaces with no polymer coat and it was found that the thicker the polymer coat, the more the curve deviated from that of the metal uncoated surfaces.

All surfaces were …

Convergence Of Material Balance In Mathematical Simulation Of Petroleum Reservoirs, Abdul Rashid Merchant Jan 1973

Convergence Of Material Balance In Mathematical Simulation Of Petroleum Reservoirs, Abdul Rashid Merchant

Doctoral Dissertations

One criterion for determining the precision of pressures calculated by a simulation model is the accuracy of the material balance. A high degree of precision in the calculated pressures is a necessary condition for elimination of error in prediction of fluid migration in the reservoir. However, this condition is not sufficient to guarantee accuracy of the simulation, since inaccuracies are introduced by truncation errors, machine round-off errors, and by the use of finite difference approximations to represent nonlinear partial differential equations.

A new procedure called Error Matrix Technique has been developed for reduction of material balance errors. This reduction is …

Numerical Simulation Of Individual Wells In A Field Simulation Model, Ali Mohammed Akbar Jan 1973

Numerical Simulation Of Individual Wells In A Field Simulation Model, Ali Mohammed Akbar

Doctoral Dissertations

"Conventional numerical simulation of hydrocarbon reservoirs is inadequate for the prediction of bottom-hole pressures at production wells. This problem can be overcome by using a special mathematical model which combines individual well simulation with reservoir simulation. Severe computational instability is commonly encountered in the radial models due to the relatively small grid-blocks and high fluid velocities in the vicinity of the well bore. This instability is found to be more pronounced during depletion of the reservoir when the pressure near the well bore is below bubble-point pressure. A new technique is introduced here for saturation calculations in the critical region …

Electro-Reduction Of Bromate On Mercury, Jaw-Shin Chang Jan 1973

Electro-Reduction Of Bromate On Mercury, Jaw-Shin Chang

Doctoral Dissertations

"The electrochemical reduction of BrO⁻₃ was studied on a stationary Hg electrode in neutral and basic solutions containing K⁺, Na⁺, and L⁺. Coulombic efficiency studies showed Br⁻ to be the predominant reduction product. The steady state kinetic parameters include Tafel slopes of ca. -0.120 V, approximate first order activity dependences for both BrO⁻₃ and the accompanying cation, and no pH dependence. A reaction scheme is proposed which involves BrO⁻₃ "bridged" to the electrode by the accompanying cation. It is suggested that the "bridging" is a result of ion-pairing in the electrical double-layer"--Abstract, page 1.

Film Boiling Of Freon 113, Normal Pentane, Cyclopentane, And Benzene From Cylindrical Surfaces At Moderate Pressures, Gary Joseph Capone Jan 1973

Film Boiling Of Freon 113, Normal Pentane, Cyclopentane, And Benzene From Cylindrical Surfaces At Moderate Pressures, Gary Joseph Capone

Doctoral Dissertations

"An investigation of film boiling heat transfer in saturated pools of liquid Freon 113, Normal Pentane, Cyclopentane, and Benzene was made. The fluids were boiled from copper, cylindrical heat transfer surfaces, 3 inches long, and 0.55, 0.75, and 1.00 inch in diameter. The heat transfer elements were positioned horizontally in an autoclave and tested at moderate pressures of up to a pressure of 242.5 psia for Normal Pentane.

The experimental data are discussed and compared with known film boiling correlations. The known correlations were found to be inadequate in predicting heat transfer coefficients as a function of pressure, temperature difference …

An Application Of Residual Relaxation To Mathematical Simulation Of Petroleum Reservoirs, Grufron Achmad Jan 1973

An Application Of Residual Relaxation To Mathematical Simulation Of Petroleum Reservoirs, Grufron Achmad

Doctoral Dissertations

"Stability and convergence have long been primary concerns in the application of numerical techniques to the simulation of petroleum reservoir performance. An iterative method based on sequentially reducing the residual to zero at each grid point has been developed. It has been shown analytically that this residual relaxation method is stable, convergent, and consistent.

A three-phase areal model was developed to simulate a hypothetical homogeneous petroleum reservoir, and various computational methods were tested with this model. The residual relaxation method developed in this study (RELAX) was found to converge as rapidly as SIP, and much faster than either LSOR or …

Measurement Of Molecular Diffusivities Of Liquid Alkane Systems, James W. Moore Jan 1973

Measurement Of Molecular Diffusivities Of Liquid Alkane Systems, James W. Moore

Doctoral Dissertations

"An unsteady-state porous frit method of diffusion coefficient measurement, recently developed in this laboratory, was improved and expanded upon. The experimental technique has been refined and documented. The unsteady-state diffusion of an initially 0.5 N NaCl solution into pure water (effective diffusivity -1.480 x 10-5 cm2/sec) was employed as the calibration standard. An overall calibration precision of ±4% was obtained. Diffusion times of two hours or less were used for the non-aqueous diffusivity measurements. The validity of this measurement technique was confirmed by the agreement of the measured self-diffusion coefficient of n-heptane (25⁰C) with literature values.

Film Boiling Of Benzene, Freon 113, Freon 11, And Normal Pentane From Horizontal Surfaces At Atmospheric Pressure, Richard Stanley Kistler Jan 1973

Film Boiling Of Benzene, Freon 113, Freon 11, And Normal Pentane From Horizontal Surfaces At Atmospheric Pressure, Richard Stanley Kistler

Doctoral Dissertations

"A film boiling study was conducted with five different area flat plates at atmospheric pressure for benzene, Freon 113, Freon 11, and n-pentane. The heat transfer surface was horizontal for all tests.

The data were compared to the correlations commonly used for heat transfer. The common correlations were found to be in error for small surface sizes, but adequate for all fluids except benzene for the largest surface, a semi-empirical equation which correlates the available data as a function of surface diameter was derived and discussed"--Abstract, page iii.

Kinetics And Dynamics Of Continuous Crystallization, Karichangal C. Parthasarathy Nov 1972

Kinetics And Dynamics Of Continuous Crystallization, Karichangal C. Parthasarathy

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

A design correlation is presented for the prediction of steady state product size distributions resulting from a continuous crystallizer, based upon a single experimental determination. This has been accomplished by the definition of a new parameter called the "degree of crystallization," which has been related to the experimental nucleation and growth rates in a salting-out crystallizer. The correlation resulted from the detection of variations in the suspension density of the mother liquor which has previously been assumed constant in certain power law models. The degree of crystallization has also been described in terms of dimensionless number, length and area moments …

A Study Of Homogeneous Catalysis By High-Pressure Kinetics. The Mechanism Of Catalysis Of A Diels—Alder Reaction, Bruce E. Poling, Charles A. Eckert Nov 1972

A Study Of Homogeneous Catalysis By High-Pressure Kinetics. The Mechanism Of Catalysis Of A Diels—Alder Reaction, Bruce E. Poling, Charles A. Eckert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The application of high-pressure kinetics as a tool to investigate the detailed mechanism of catalysis of a reaction is demonstrated. Activation volumes have been determined for the Diels-Alder addition of 2, 3-dimethylbutadiene to n-butyl acrylate, both uncatalyzed and catalyzed with AICI3. Also, partial molal volumes of reactants and products have been measured. From these data it is shown that the volume profile along the reaction coordinate is similar for both the catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions. Further, both reactions proceed by a concerted one-step mechanism through a compact transition state with maximum accumulation of double bonds. Thus, the role of the …

The Fate Of Hazardous Polluting Substances In An Aqueous Environment, Robert Paul Casani Oct 1972

The Fate Of Hazardous Polluting Substances In An Aqueous Environment, Robert Paul Casani

Theses

The fate of Hazardous Polluting. Substances (HPS) in an aqueous environment has been investigated using ultraviolet light. Chlorobenzene, o-cresol and nitrobenzene were used as model HPS for this study. The kinetics were followed and good first order plots were obtained for all compounds. The temperature of the reaction was shown to effect the rate. Solid insoluble and soluble non-volatile products were formed in the photolytic reaction of the three model systems.

The Preparation Of Cis- And Trans-1,2-Dimethoxyethylene. The Study Of The Cis-Trans-Rearrangement And Evaluation Of Equilibrium Constants, James T. Waldron

Dissertations

Equilibrium constants for the mercuric acetate-catalyzed reaction, cis-CH3 OCH=CHOCH3 D trans-CH3 OCH=CHOCH3, have been determined in the liquid and vapor phase over the temperature range 30° - 175°C by gas chromatography analysis. A novel synthesis of the cis- and trans-isomers of 1,2-dimethoxyethylene is discussed. From a screening of 29 catalysts, mercuric acetate, mercuric benzoate, and mercuric salicylate were found to be favorable isomerization catalysts. For the liquid phase reaction,

ln K = -779.8/T + 0.6748

with ΔH° = +1.549 ± 0.019 Kcal/mole
and ΔS° = +1.34 ± 0.05 e.u./mole

Similarly, for the vapor phase reaction, …

Theses

A literature survey was conducted on SBR aging, Being vulnerable to attack by the forces of nature (such as ozone, oxygen, heat and light), SBR vulcanizates requires the addition of chemicals to retard aging. Phenylamines were found to be the best type of antiaging additives, The effectiveness of other antiaging additives were examined. Although the mechanisms of aging are not perfectly understood; sane theories and aging reactions are discussed.

Continuous Crystallization Of High Explosives, Larry E. Hatler Jul 1972

Continuous Crystallization Of High Explosives, Larry E. Hatler

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Nitroguanidine (NQ) is a high explosive which is commercially available in low bulk density form (0.20 to 0.30 gms/cm3). This low bulk density limits its usefulness as an explosive. High bulk density NQ can be produced from a NQ-N, N-dime-thylformamide-Versamid 125 system when crystallized in a mixed suspension mixed product removal crystallizer. Bulk densities ranged from 0.92 to 1.05 gms/cm3 for the operating conditions used. The effect of agitator speed, growth rate, and solids concentration on nucleation rates was determined using a multiple linear regression technique. The resulting equation is: B0 = 0.19 (RPM) 1.54 (G) …

Dispersion In Laminiar Flow Of Non-Newtonian Fluids, Subhash N. Shah Jul 1972

Dispersion In Laminiar Flow Of Non-Newtonian Fluids, Subhash N. Shah

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

In the present investigation, Taylor's analysis of the dispersion of solutes in laminar flow of a Newtonian fluid through a circular tube was extended to the case of a non-Newtonian Eyring model fluid. A new approach was taken to solve the convective diffusion equation for the Eyring model fluid. This approach incorporates the use of the dimensionless longitudinal pressure gradient and the mean velocity to obtain the dimensionless concentration. Using an approach similar to that of Taylor, a solution of the diffusion equation was obtained for quantities such as the dimensionless concentration, mean concentration, and effective dispersion coefficient as a …

Computer Simulation Of A Linde "Double Column", John A. Bazan

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a Fortran Computer Program to simulate the operation of a Linde "Double Column" for the separation of air into oxygen and nitrogen. The model outputs the number of contact stages required, the reflux ratio, the heat loads (condenser and reboiler, and the five profiles of temperature, pressure, vapor flow rate, liquid flow rate, and light component composition. From this data, the proposed design can be evaluated, and the effect of varying operating conditions explored.

A Solid State Kinetic Study Of Potassium Permanganate In Alkali Halide Disks, Joseph Paul Cusumano Jun 1972

A Solid State Kinetic Study Of Potassium Permanganate In Alkali Halide Disks, Joseph Paul Cusumano

Theses

The stoichiometry and the kinetics of the reactions of KMnO4 in KCl and KIO4 in KCl were studied. The kinetics of the reactions were studied at three different temperatures to obtain the thermodynamic parameters. In addition, these reactions were studied in KBr and RbI matrices. The data was obtained using infrared spectrophotometer measurements.

The reactions all appeared to be first order with respect to the permanganate ion. The stoichiometric studies indicate that the Mn4- is converted to Mn++ and the Mn++ ion apparently catalyzes the reduction of KI4. The results indicate the …

Analysis Of Decomposition Gases And Leach Water From Controlled Sanitary Landfill, Robert Gargano Jun 1972

Analysis Of Decomposition Gases And Leach Water From Controlled Sanitary Landfill, Robert Gargano

Theses

A sanitary landfill was simulated by placing "refuse" between two layers of soil in 6" by 24" cylinders. Canine nutriment was used to simulate the refuse. Once the refuse began to decompose, the decomposition gases were collected in a gas cell and analyzed in an Infrared Spectrophotometer. When gas samples were not taken, the decomposition gases were vented through a water trap (to prevent air from backing up into the system) into the atmosphere. Distilled water was added and withdrawn at two week intervals to leach out the pollutants.

From the Infrared analysis, the decomposition gases were determined to be …

Separations Via Semicontinuous Parametric Pumping, Edward H. Reiss Jun 1972

Separations Via Semicontinuous Parametric Pumping, Edward H. Reiss

Theses

A semicontinuous parametric pump with batch operation during one half-cycle and continuous operation in the other half-cycle was experimentally investigated in the model system, toluene-n-heptane on silica gel adsorbent. Comparison was made with analytical results obtained by the equilibrium theory. It was shown that when the penetration distance for the cold cycle was less than or equal to that of the hot cycle and the height of the column, the rate of production of pure solvent in the semicontinuous pump may become quite large relative to that in the continuous pump.
