Contactless microscale tweezers are highly effective tools for manipulating, patterning, and assembling bioparticles. However, current tweezers are limited in their ability to comprehensively manipulate bioparticles, providing only partial control over the six fundamental motions (three translational and three rotational motions). This study presents a joint subarray acoustic tweezers platform that leverages acoustic radiation force and viscous torque to control the six fundamental motions of single bioparticles. This breakthrough is significant as our manipulation mechanism allows for controlling the three translational and three rotational motions of single cells, as well as enabling complex manipulation that combines controlled translational and rotational motions. …

Atomic Layer Deposition Of Ru Nanoclusters On Ba-Laceox: A Highly Efficient Catalyst For Ammonia Synthesis Under Mild Conditions, Kaiying Wang, Baitang Jin, Xiaoqing He, Xinhua Liang
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Ammonia synthesis has significant implications for global energy and environmental issues, driving the need for highly active catalysts that operate under mild conditions. This study reports the successful deposition of uniform ∼1.0 nm metallic ruthenium (Ru) nanoclusters onto Ba-LaCeOx particles via atomic layer deposition (ALD). The catalytic performance of the ALD-prepared Ru nanoclusters was assessed for ammonia synthesis and compared with two catalysts produced by conventional incipient wetness impregnation. For the ALD-prepared Ru nanoclusters, a pre-reaction H2-reduction step induced partial encapsulation of suboxide species on Ru sites due to strong metal-support interactions, limiting Ru nanocluster sintering and …

in this study, a method for determining the concentration of lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose in plant materials using Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy of Broussonetia papyrefera was developed and tested. The procedure is based on the use of calibration functions that reflect the dependence of the intensity of analytical absorption lines on the concentration of lignin (1512 cm-1) and cellulose (1450 cm-1) in standard samples; indirect correlation was used for hemicellulose. The model samples were ternary mixtures composed of lignin, bacterial cellulose and hemicellulose in different proportions. The proposed method was tested on a wide range of plant biomass samples.

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A spinal cord injury (SCI) compresses the spinal cord, killing neurons and glia at the injury site and resulting in prolonged inflammation and scarring that prevents regeneration. Astrocytes, the main glia in the spinal cord, become reactive following SCI and contribute to adverse outcomes. The anti-inflammatory cytokine transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGFβ3) has been shown to mitigate astrocyte reactivity; however, the effects of prolonged TGFβ3 exposure on reactive astrocyte phenotype have not yet been explored. This study investigates whether magnetic core-shell electro spun fibers can be used to alter the release rate of TGFβ3 using externally applied magnetic fields, …

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
The major obstacle to renewable energy sources is a lack of long-term energy storage capabilities. Energy produced during the day dissipates, leaving insufficient electricity for at night. The goal of the project is to design an Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Battery (AORFB) to act as long-term energy storage. Work has been done using machine learning to identify suitable compounds for the batteries. In this work there was no indication as to the aqueous solubility of the molecules; this controls the device’s energy storage capabilities. We used a machine learning model to determine the aqueous solubility of slightly more than 3000 …

Feasibility Study Of Perovskite Solid Electrolyte For Electrochemical Lithium-Ion Cells, Danyi Sun
Theses and Dissertations
To achieve a high energy density in lithium-ion batteries (LIB), replacing the graphite anode with lithium metal is essential, as it offers a theoretical capacity of 3840 mAh/g.(Q. Wang et al. 2021) However, the use of lithium metal anodes is restricted by the formation of lithium dendrites, which can cause short circuits.(Wood et al. 2016) Solid-state electrolytes present a viable alternative to conventional liquid electrolytes by potentially mitigating dendrite growth. Among these, the perovskite-type Li3/8Sr7/16Ta3/4Zr1/4O3 (LSTH) stands out due to its excellent ambient stability, although its synthesis, properties, and applications remain underexplored.(Y. Li et al. 2018) In this study, I …

To meet the growing demand for freshwater driven by population growth and rising living standards, the first desalination plants were established in the late 1950s. As energy costs have risen over time, research has increasingly focused on reducing the overall cost of water treatment. Electrodialysis (ED), which facilitates the migration of anions and cations across ion exchange membranes under the influence of an electric field, has gained significant attention as a treatment method for saline water and brine due to its simplicity, low cost, and scalability. However, its traditional batch operation mode and the potential for generating flammable gases have …

Electroless Deposition And Galvanic Displacement For The Control Of Supported Nanoparticle Size And Composition, Haiying Zhou
Theses and Dissertations
Catalyst performances can be greatly affected by properties such as particle size, composition, geometry, and cleanliness of the active surface. To achieve optimal catalytic performance, appropriate synthesis methods are required to synthesize the desired structures. Supported metal particle catalysts are usually prepared by impregnation and precipitation methods in industry. Although these two methods are simple, they exhibit poor control over surface morphology, leading to a wide particle size distribution and uncontrolled distribution of different metal components. In this dissertation, three topics on controlling surface morphology are discussed.
For structure sensitive reactions, reactivity and selectivity can be strongly affected by particle …

A Systems Biology Approach To Predict Phenotypes From Genotypes For Plants And Bacteria, Niaz Bahar Chowdhury
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Predicting phenotypes from genotypes is a central challenge in systems biology in understanding how organisms respond to environmental and genetic changes. To address this, genome-scale metabolic models (GSMs) integrated with omics data and machine learning provide a comprehensive framework to connect genotype to phenotype. This dissertation utilizes these approaches in plants and bacterial systems, revealing key metabolic adaptations. In maize, a root-specific GSM reveals metabolic reprogramming under nitrogen stress, offering strategies for improving stress tolerance. Building on this, a multi-organ maize GSM of temperature stress identifies metabolic bottlenecks, providing targets to enhance crop resilience. Similarly, in rice, a grain-specific GSM …
