Characterizing Nerve Fiber Activation By Varying Fiber Diameter And Depth Within A Conductive Medium: A Finite Element Approach, Nathan Daniel Soto Aug 2011

Characterizing Nerve Fiber Activation By Varying Fiber Diameter And Depth Within A Conductive Medium: A Finite Element Approach, Nathan Daniel Soto

Master's Theses

In some instances neuropathies can be diagnosed through a conduction velocity test. However, not all neuropathies can be classified using this method. Gaining an understanding of how the stimulus level varies for different fiber sizes at different fiber depths within a conductive medium will provide useful information for simulation studies.

Following a two-step approach using COMSOL and MATLAB, a simulation was implemented to investigate the stimulus necessary to activate different sized fibers at different depths. In this two-step approach, COMSOL was used to describe the voltage profile that would be present within a conductive medium after a stimulus was applied. …

Controlled Release Of 6-Aminonicotinamide From Aligned, Electrospun Fibers Alters Astrocyte Metabolism And Dorsal Root Ganglia Neurite Outgrowth, Nicholas J. Schaub, Ryan J. Gilbert Aug 2011

Controlled Release Of 6-Aminonicotinamide From Aligned, Electrospun Fibers Alters Astrocyte Metabolism And Dorsal Root Ganglia Neurite Outgrowth, Nicholas J. Schaub, Ryan J. Gilbert

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Following central nervous system (CNS) injury, activated astrocytes form a glial scar that inhibits the migration of axons ultimately leading to regeneration failure. Biomaterials developed for CNS repair can provide local delivery of therapeutics and/or guidance mechanisms to encourage cell migration into damaged regions of the brain or spinal cord. Electro spun fibers are a promising type of biomaterial for CNS injury since these fibers can direct cellular and axonal migration while slowly delivering therapy to the injury site. In this study, it was hypothesized that inclusion of an anti-metabolite, 6-aminonicotinamide (6AN), within poly-l-lactic acid electro spun fibers could attenuate …

Targeted Multistage Delivery Of Nanoparticles To The Bone Marrow, Aman Mann Aug 2011

Targeted Multistage Delivery Of Nanoparticles To The Bone Marrow, Aman Mann

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Bone marrow is a target organ site involved in multiple diseases including myeloproliferative disorders and hematologic malignancies and metastases from breast and prostate. Most of these diseases are characterized with poor quality of life, and the treatment options are only palliative due to lack of delivery mechanisms for systemically injected drugs which results in dose limitation to protect the healthy hematopoietic cells. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop effective therapeutic strategies that allow for selective delivery of therapeutic payload to the bone marrow. Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems provide the opportunity to deliver drugs to the target tissue while …

In-Vivo Ct Dosimetry During Virtual Colonoscopy, Jonathon W. Mueller Aug 2011

In-Vivo Ct Dosimetry During Virtual Colonoscopy, Jonathon W. Mueller

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Virtual colonoscopy (VC) is a minimally invasive means for identifying colorectal polyps and colorectal lesions by insufflating a patient’s bowel, applying contrast agent via rectal catheter, and performing multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) scans. The technique is recommended for colonic health screening by the American Cancer Society but not funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) partially because of potential risks from radiation exposure. To date, no in‐vivo organ dose measurements have been performed for MDCT scans; thus, the accuracy of any current dose estimates is currently unknown.

In this study, two TLDs were affixed to the inner …

Equivalent Circuit Implementation Of Demyelinated Human Neuron In Spice, Nathan A. Angel

Master's Theses

This work focuses on modeling a demyelinated Hodgkin and Huxley (HH) neuron with Simulated Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis (SPICE) platform. Demyelinating disorders affect over 350,000 people in the U.S and understanding the demyelination process at the cellular level is necessary to find safe ways to treat the diseases [9]. Utilizing a previous SPICE model of an electrically small cell neuron developed by Szlavik [32], an extended core conductor myelinated neuron was produced in this work. The myelinated neuron developed has seven active Nodes of Ranvier (nodes) separated by a myelin sheath. The myelin sheath can be successfully modeled with …

Global Flow Impacts Time-To-Passage Judgments Based On Local Motion Cues, Scott A. Beardsley, Elif M. Sikoglu, Heiko Hecht, Lucia M. Vaina

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We assessed the effect of the coherence of optic flow on time-to-passage judgments in order to investigate the strategies that observers use when local expansion information is reduced or lacking. In the standard display, we presented a cloud of dots whose image expanded consistent with constant observer motion. The dots themselves, however, did not expand and were thus devoid of object expansion cues. Only the separations between the dots expanded. Subjects had to judge which of two colored target dots, presented at different simulated depths and lateral displacements would pass them first. Image velocities of the target dots were chosen …

Quantitative Analysis Of The Reaction Between Gliadin And Citric Acid Under Weak Acidic And Weak Alkaline Conditions, Wei Li

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Gliadin was reacted with citric acid under weak acidic and weak alkaline conditions in both wet and dry states and the reaction mechanism was studied. The low morphological stability in an aqueous environment and inferior mechanical properties have restricted the applications of plant proteins, although these materials possess a unique structure, biocompatibility and biodegradability. Carboxylic acids such as citric acid are inexpensive and nontoxic chemicals and are preferred for crosslinking proteins and cellulose to improve the desired properties of the materials.

In this study, gliadin was chosen as a model of plant proteins to react with citric acid. However, previous …

Sensorimotor Control Of 3d Arm Movement And Stability In Post-Stroke Hemiparesis, Kakanand Alfonsomarie Srungboonmee Jul 2011

Sensorimotor Control Of 3d Arm Movement And Stability In Post-Stroke Hemiparesis, Kakanand Alfonsomarie Srungboonmee

Dissertations (1934 -)

Deficits of the affected arm in people with post-stroke hemiparesis have been generally associated with decreased strength and increased spasticity. These deficits are varied in proximal (shoulder) and distal (elbow) joints which results in an overall impairment during movement or during stabilization of hand position in space. In this study, reaching of the hemiparetic arm in 3D workspace was characterized by a curved and non-smooth endpoint trajectory and a reduced functional range of motion, compared to the unimpaired arm. Smoother trajectories were observed in the acceleration phase more than the deceleration phase, which was common to both the stroke subjects …

A Study On Facility Planning Using Discrete Event Simulation: Case Study Of A Grain Delivery Terminal, Sarah M. Asio

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The application of traditional approaches to the design of efficient facilities can be tedious and time consuming when uncertainty and a number of constraints exist. Queuing models and mathematical programming techniques are not able to capture the complex interaction between resources, the environment and space constraints for dynamic stochastic processes. In the following study discrete event simulation is applied to the facility planning process for a grain delivery terminal. The discrete event simulation approach has been applied to studies such as capacity planning and facility layout for a gasoline station and evaluating the resource requirements for a manufacturing facility. To …

Structure And Optical Properties Of Self-Assembled Multicomponent Plasmonic Nanogels, Tao Cong, Satvik N. Wani, Peter Anthony Paynter, Radhakrishna Sureshkumar

Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - All Scholarship

Multicomponent plasmonic nanogels (PNGs) capable of broadband absorption of light in the 400-700 nm wavelength range were synthesized by the self-assembly of metal nanoparticles with wormlike surfactant micelles. Small angle x-ray scattering and rheological experiments suggest that the nanoparticles bridge micelle fragments to aid the formation a stable gel phase with exceptional color uniformity. Their optical absorbance could be robustly tuned by changing the nanoparticle type (Au/Ag), size, shape, and/or concentration. The PNGs have relatively low viscosity and are thermoreversible. Potential applications to the manufacturing of coatings and interfaces for solar energy harvesting and reconfigurable optical devices can be envisioned.

Asymmetric Transfer Of Task Dependent Perceptual Learning In Visual Motion Processing, Sampada Charudatta Wakde Jul 2011

Asymmetric Transfer Of Task Dependent Perceptual Learning In Visual Motion Processing, Sampada Charudatta Wakde

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The effects of perceptual learning (PL) on the sensory representation are not fully understood, especially for higher–level visual mechanisms more directly relevant to behavior. The objective of this research is to elucidate the mechanisms that mediate task dependent learning by determining where and how task dependent learning occurs in the later stages of visual motion processing.

Eighteen subjects were trained to perform a dual–2TAFC visual discrimination task in which they were required to simultaneously detect changes in the direction of moving dots (task–1) and the proportion of red dots (task–2) shown in two stimulus apertures presented in either the left …

Detection Of Specific Biological Antigens Using Ac Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Darrel Angelo Mazzari Jul 2011

Detection Of Specific Biological Antigens Using Ac Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Darrel Angelo Mazzari

Dissertations (1934 -)

When certain antigens are present in our environment, a rapid, on-site, accurate, selective, and repeatable detection method can be invaluable in preventing illness or saving lives. Rapid detection of these antigens is important to avert spreading infections.

Currently, capturing a sample and sending it to a laboratory can take weeks to get results, which can be much too long. Conventional sensing methodologies include various electrical measurements as capacitive, potentiometric, piezoelectric, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Of particular power and interest is Alternating Current (AC) Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) which provides for the characterization of the electrical …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The rod photoreceptors are implicated in a number of devastating retinal diseases. However, routine imaging of these cells has remained elusive, even with the advent of adaptive optics imaging. Here, we present the first in vivo images of the contiguous rod photoreceptor mosaic in nine healthy human subjects. The images were collected with three different confocal adaptive optics scanning ophthalmoscopes at two different institutions, using 680 and 775 nm superluminescent diodes for illumination. Estimates of photoreceptor density and rod:cone ratios in the 5°–15° retinal eccentricity range are consistent with histological findings, confirming our ability to resolve the rod mosaic by …

Monitoring Of Mesenchymal Based Constructs Using Magnetic Resonance Elastography, Evan T. Curtis Jul 2011

Monitoring Of Mesenchymal Based Constructs Using Magnetic Resonance Elastography, Evan T. Curtis

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Evaluating the functionality of an engineered material lies in the proper characterization of its material and functional properties. In the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, engineered bone or fat tissue must behave as an adequate replacement else failure of the material could result in discomfort and further surgical procedures. A significant material characteristic that reflects tissue development is the mechanical properties (i.e. shear strength and viscosity). Shear strength and viscosity provide an indication of how efficient the material is in dissipating energy. Energy dissipation occurs naturally in many tissues including fat and can prevent damage to deeper tissues. Many of the …

Adaptive Real-Time Decoding Of Brain Signals For Long-Term Control Of A Neuro-Prosthetic Device, Tushar Ashok Dharampal Jul 2011

Adaptive Real-Time Decoding Of Brain Signals For Long-Term Control Of A Neuro-Prosthetic Device, Tushar Ashok Dharampal

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Changes in the statistical properties of neural signals recorded at the brain machine interface (BMI) pose significant challenges for accurate long-term control of prostheses interfaced directly with the brain by continuously altering the relationship between neural responses and desired action. In this thesis, we develop and test an adaptive decoding algorithm that can recover from changes in the statistical properties of neural signals within minutes. The adaptive decoding algorithm uses a Kalman filter as part of a dual-filter design to continuously optimize the relationship between the observed neural responses and the desired action of the prosthesis. Performance of the algorithm …

Examining The Relationships Among Injury Outcomes, Velocity And Grip Strength During Dynamic Platform Perturbation, Braden Cripe Jul 2011

Examining The Relationships Among Injury Outcomes, Velocity And Grip Strength During Dynamic Platform Perturbation, Braden Cripe

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Studies examining the relationship between inputs and outputs for simulated models of dynamically perturbed horizontal platforms are scarce. Most of these scenarios include a standing operator with upper extremity grip, oftentimes subjected to lateral impulses, which may lead to occupant injury. While the detailed study of these collision scenarios is sparse, the prevalence of their application is great.

This thesis aims to identify how two input parameters, velocity change (ÄV) and grip strength, affect injury assessment reference values (IARVs). This is accomplished by using Mathematical Dynamic Modeling (MADYMO) software to simulate the scenarios defined by those inputs. In the simulation, …

Role Of Tendon Vibration In Multijoint Reflex Coupling In The Hemiparetic Arm Post Stroke, Bani Gadhoke Jul 2011

Role Of Tendon Vibration In Multijoint Reflex Coupling In The Hemiparetic Arm Post Stroke, Bani Gadhoke

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Post stroke hemiparesis causes reflex coupling in multiple muscles of the arm, leading to atypical movements that hamper motor control. In particular, people post-stroke can become unstable while holding the arm at the end of a planar motion. Recently, we have found that tendon vibration of the wrist flexors improves the stability of the arm during a hold task. The objective of the current study was to identify the effects of vibration applied to the wrist flexors on the biceps and triceps stretch reflexes, generated using a tendon tapper. In people post-stroke, tendon tap perturbations of the biceps and triceps …

Methods For Detecting High-Frequency Oscillations In Ongoing Brain Signals: Application To The Determination Of Epileptic Seizure Onset Zones, Chiran Dilip Doshi

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder with varied expression. Patients with focal onset seizures that are resistant to medications can benefit from ablative surgery. However, localization of the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and characterization of propagation to secondary areas can be challenging. The present study aimed at developing the appropriate signal processing methodology to detect bursts of interictal high-frequency oscillations (HFOs), as a possible signature of the SOZ, in patients with drug-resistant partial epilepsy. Additionally, invasive interictal and ictal intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) data and non-invasive electromagnetic source imaging with magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from three subjects were analyzed. We developed a novel …

Tools For Creating Wide-Field Views Of The Human Retina Using Optical Coherence Tomography, Ashavini M. Pavaskar Jul 2011

Tools For Creating Wide-Field Views Of The Human Retina Using Optical Coherence Tomography, Ashavini M. Pavaskar

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has allowed in-vivo viewing of details of retinal layers like never before. With the development of spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) details of nearly 2µm axial resolution and higher imaging speed have been reported. Nevertheless, a single volume scan of the retina is typically restricted to 6mm x 6mm in size. Having a larger field of view of the retina will definitely enhance the clinical utility of the OCT.

A tool was developed for creating wide-field thickness maps of the retina by combining the use of already available tools like i2k Retina (DualAlign, LLC, Clifton Park, NY) …

Modeling And Computational Framework For The Specification And Simulation Of Large-Scale Spiking Neural Networks, David James Herzfeld Jul 2011

Modeling And Computational Framework For The Specification And Simulation Of Large-Scale Spiking Neural Networks, David James Herzfeld

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Recurrently connected neural networks, in which synaptic connections between neurons can form directed cycles, have been used extensively in the literature to describe various neurophysiological phenomena, such as coordinate transformations during sensorimotor integration. Due to the directed cycles that can exist in recurrent networks, there is no well-known way to a priori specify synaptic weights to elicit neuron spiking responses to stimuli based on available neurophysiology. Using a common mean field assumption, that synaptic inputs are uncorrelated for sufficiently large populations of neurons, we show that the connection topology and a neuron's response characteristics can be decoupled. This assumption allows …
