Journal of Network Music and Arts

Sync Variations is a collaboration between the composer and sound artist Elad Shniderman, the physicist Moti Fridman, and his colleagues Nir Davidson and Shir Shahal. An article on the scientific research aspect of this project was published in Nature Communications². This article focuses on the musical performance and score.

The project is the product of a unique interaction between musicians through a custom-programmed network system. This system simulates the network environment of the internet in many ways. However, the piece has not yet been performed over the internet, which naturally will be the next step in this project. …

On Composing 5,000 Miles, Joe Sferra

This article is my account of composing my first piece for telematic performance, a quartet called 5,000 Miles. The piece was commissioned by the ACCAD Sonic Arts Ensemble, directed by Marc Ainger, Ann Stimson, and Federico Cámara Halac. I performed the piece with the ensemble on two performances in November 2020: a performance for the NowNetArts Conference, and a second performance titled “Into the Multiverse” for the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University. I outline how I approached writing a specifically telematic piece, then present an analysis.

We present a report of the experience of our remote musical collaboration during the Covid-19 pandemic regarding live electronic, audiovisual compositions, and telematic performance in the context of the project Sound Notebooks. We discuss the problems found and the solutions adopted in the performances, as well as the hypotheses of musical research raised by the remote environment. We argue that the variety of expressive modes, sonic modalities, and video possibilities in the Sound Notebooks repertoire we presented contributes to the construction of an aesthetics for remote performance. Electo Electro 2020 was a project that was created specifically for the 2020 presidential election cycle. This paper is a follow-up to an article published in 2019 for the Journal of Network Music and Arts, “Voting Booths and Interactive Art Installations: The Diebold AccuVote-TS in Context.” In that paper, I discussed the original concept and goals for the project, several examples of work from other artists, and an earlier project from 2016 that served as the impetus for Electo Electro. Effective laboratory and classroom demonstration of microbiome size and shape, diversity, and ecological relationships is hampered by a lack of high-resolution, easy-to-use, readily accessible physical or digital models for use in teaching. Three-dimensional (3D) representations are, overall, more effective in communicating visuospatial information, allowing for a better understanding of concepts not directly observable with the unaided eye. Published morphology descriptions and microscopy images were used as the basis for designing 3D digital models, scaled at 20,000×, using computer-aided design software (CAD) and generating printed models of bacteria on mass-market 3D printers. Autologous Stem Cell-Derived Β Cells For Diabetes Cell Replacement Therapy, Kristina G. Maxwell

Autologous stem cell therapy is a promising treatment for patients with diabetes worldwide. Previous stem cell-derived β (SC-β) cell protocols were unable to efficiently differentiate multiple patient induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into stem cell-derived islets (SC-islets), containing insulin-secreting SC-β cells. Recent updates targeting the actin cytoskeleton have enabled the differentiation of 14 diabetic and nondiabetic stem cell lines into SC-islets. We used genetic engineering, specifically CRISPR/Cas9, to correct the diabetes-causing mutation in stem cells from patients with Wolfram Syndrome. The genetically engineered SC-β cells functioned and had a composition similar to nondiabetic SC-β cells, unlike the unedited SC-β cells …

Amelia Earhart’s prominence in American aviation during the 1930s obscures a crucial point: she was but one of a closely knit community of women pilots. Although the women were well known in the profession and widely publicized in the press at the time, they are largely overlooked today. Like Earhart, they wrote extensively about aviation and women’s causes, producing an absorbing record of the life of women fliers during the emergence and peak of the Golden Age of Aviation (1925–1940). The majority of Irish passage tombs (c. 230) predominantly date to the Middle Neolithic (c. 3600–3000 BC). A small number of summit cairns may also contain passage tombs because of their round form, proximity and intervisibility. The island’s passage tombs and related cairns share distinguishing characteristics – elevated siting, visibility and long-range views of distant horizons in varying directions of the compass. This chapter presents the findings of the first scenic analysis of the horizon and views at these sites recorded at an island scale. The method uses measured orientations of horizon sectors related to observed variation in horizon range. …

While many metropolitan Nebraskans had someone in their household that quarantined because of possible coronavirus exposure or who contracted COVID-19, most have friends or family in their community that quarantined or contracted the virus. Many metropolitan Nebraskans also have friends or family both inside and outside their community who were hospitalized as a result of COVID-19.

As the world becomes more connected and globalized, the problems that engineers are called upon to solve are increasingly complex and interdependent. Unfortunately, engineering coursework has traditionally focused on abstract and closed-ended problem solving, offering few opportunities for students to develop these skills. In this practice paper, we argue for the importance of integrating the humanities and engineering to understand the multiple and intersecting layers of context in an engineering project. We then describe the Humanities-Informed Engineering Projects course, which we developed to help students acquire this perspective. This body of research examined the Arab American culture and its impact on women who studied the male-dominated major of engineering. Through a qualitative approach, women born and raised in an Arab American home unpacked their experiences since childhood that made them who they are today. The 10 female Arab American participants shared how they made it through and successfully completed their major in engineering. This study focused on engineering, since there has been little to no growth in women who major in this male-dominated subject.
