As he approaches the club, Clay notices that "across the bowl that held the town, another mountain rose up" (52). The most noticeable feature on this opposite mountain is a "marble statue of Jesus with his arms stretched out in front ... so lit up that it could be seen for miles" (52). Yet in 2010 when IBM’s Institute for Business Values asked 1500 chief executives what leadership competency they championed above all others, voters selected none of the winners from three years before. Instead, the new American idol was creativity.

Werewolves And Other Shapeshifters In Popular Culture: A Thematic Analysis Of Recent Depictions, Kimberley Mcmahon-Coleman, Roslyn Weaver Dec 2011

Werewolves And Other Shapeshifters In Popular Culture: A Thematic Analysis Of Recent Depictions, Kimberley Mcmahon-Coleman, Roslyn Weaver

Kimberley McMahon-Coleman

In recent years, shapeshifting characters in literature, film and television have been on the rise. This has followed the increased use of such characters as metaphors, with novelists and critics identifying specific meanings and topics behind them. This book aims to unravel the shapeshifting trope. Rather than pursue a case-based study, the works are grouped around specific themes--adolescence, gender, sexuality, race, disability, addiction, and spirituality--that are explored through the metaphor of shapeshifting. Because of its transformative possibilities and its flexibility, the shapeshifter has the potential to change how we see our world. With coverage of iconic fantasy texts and a …

Integrating Ctls Into Campus Strategic Planning Through An Effective Brainstorming Process, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

One way Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs) can position themselves at the epicenter of campus activity and insert themselves into strategic planning is by transforming group work through an effective brainstorming process that the authors have developed called Ideation Development for Excellence in Academic Learning (I.D.E.A.L.). The authors explain the evolution of the process in a learning community from best practices in brainstorming through a working model. The process has been effective with actual groups both on and off campus (vs. laboratory conditions). “Collaboration drives creativity because innovation always emerges from a series of sparks—never a single flash of …

Bloody Ground: Stories Of Mystery And Intrigue From Kentucky, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

In the 1770's before Daniel Boone finally settled at Boonesborough, he made many forays into "Cantucke," mentally mapping the territory, taking what game he could, and establishing relationships with the Shawnee and settlers. He started with a curiosity about a land he knew little of and ended up becoming its most famous inhabitant. In the 1970's in Richmond, about ten miles from Boone's fort, we sat down in a booth at a local McDonald's and started writing--short stories, plays, novels, magazine columns, newspaper articles, and academic papers. One of us was a native Kentuckian and the other a carpetbagging Connecticut …

It Works For Me, Creatively, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

The authors’ purpose in this seventh book in the “It Works for Me” series is to demonstrate that “everyone possesses creative talent, though it may be latent in some and difficult to bring out in others. It’s not just a talent possessed by artists and engineers, mind you, but everyone.” Furthermore, “Creative people have figured out consciously or un- that a small seed of creativity can be made to grow by having the proper environment and a minimal set of skills.
