Children in the Duval County School System in Jacksonville, Florida, who are low/average achievers have to compete in a multi-graded classroom atmosphere. These students are passed along supported by low minimum-based competency test scores. The purpose of this project was to show teachers how they can present mnemonic procedures to these students in an effort to help these students raise test scores, boost self-esteem, and provide a self-help study device that can aid their progress in subsequent grades, aid morale, and thus avoid potential drop-outs in the system. It is the purpose of this study to compose a bibliography of primary level books and/or stories that depict a positive image of the elderly. Various procedures were used to gather selections of reading material for primary level children which portray this image. The following were the methods used for this compilation. Numerous reference books which categorize children's books under related topics were examined. Approximately thirty-five letters were submitted to various organizations which deal with the elderly population asking for information or sources regarding this topic. The project focused on nine students who had a pronounced need for movement while learning and/or being tested. The study was conducted to determine whether the achievement scores of these nine students would be influenced by the denial or availability of movement while they were administered a standardized reading test. The purpose of the project was two-fold. First, it was developed to teach first grade children the importance of learning to read as a functional necessity. The second purpose was to develop methods of doing this while simultaneously reinforcing several beginning reading and comprehension skills in a motivational way. A Skill Based Approach To Organizing And Cataloguing Supplemental Reading Materials At The Elementary Level, Patricia E. Selby

This project organized and catalogued all of the supplemental reading materials of an elementary reading room according to a reading skills code list. The code list was developed by consulting reading skills lists and the school district's student learning objectives. Fifteen major skill areas were included in the code list. Each was broken down into subskills which were assigned code numbers. Each supplemental material was examined and catalogued under the appropriate code number. A handbook was compiled which explained the system and listed all of the materials by skill area.

The home language acquisition skills notebook was developed to aid parents in giving appropriate language stimulation and activities for their child's level of development, four to six years of age. In addition, positive home teaching techniques, positive home language hints, and a mini-language library bibliography are also available to guide the parent in appropriate home language intervention. Although the notebook will be used with language delayed children first, it is designed to be used with all children in the Lake Chelan Elementary Kindergarten in an attempt to stimulate better language skills, both receptive and expressive.

There was a need to determine the recreation needs of girls in the pre-adolescent age range of nine through fourteen years old so that municipal recreation professionals may program activities to meet the desires of this specific population. In order to do this, a testing instrument was developed. The test, a recreation preference schedule, used closed questions exclusively, unlike many of the available checklist surveys. The recreation preference schedule was modeled after the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule that was used in counseling. Due to the low economic area from which the subjects for this experiment were chosen, many were lacking in environmental experiences which contributed to their growth in reading skills and interests in the primary grades. This experiment was devised as a means to study reading difficulties in children from a low socioeconomic area, while, at the same time, parents were used to help overcome those problems. The main purpose of this study was to compare and contrast improvement in reading interest and reading skills in matched groups of subjects of an experimental and a control group.

To determine the effect of a teacher's reading literature upon the interest in reading books among sixth grade students, one group (experimental) participated in a twenty-eight week program of scheduled daily time during which they listened to literature read by their teacher.
