An In-Service Program For Secondary Teachers To Increase Understanding Of The Learning Disabled Student’S Response To Learning Styles, Marsha Nystrom

An in-service program for secondary teachers to increase understanding of the learning disabled student's response to learning style was developed. The in-service was organized into five 2 hour weekly sessions. The program format includes a participant agenda, and a presenter's guide with objectives and instructions for each instructional activity. Characteristics of the learning disabled student, the Dunn and Dunn applied model of student learning style, and two learning style materials development sessions were included in the in-service program.

This project served to develop a teacher manual for teachers of adults at the Bellingham Vocational Technical Institute in Bellingham, Washington. The project was designed to assist in staff development by (1) informing vocational instructors of state and school policies and procedures, (2) identifying new and updated teaching guidelines, and (3) by assisting in orienting new staff to school and vocational education procedures. A Skill Based Approach To Organizing And Cataloguing Supplemental Reading Materials At The Elementary Level, Patricia E. Selby

This project organized and catalogued all of the supplemental reading materials of an elementary reading room according to a reading skills code list. The code list was developed by consulting reading skills lists and the school district's student learning objectives. Fifteen major skill areas were included in the code list. Each was broken down into subskills which were assigned code numbers. Each supplemental material was examined and catalogued under the appropriate code number. A handbook was compiled which explained the system and listed all of the materials by skill area.

Home Language Acquisition Skills Notebook, Rosanna May Detering

The home language acquisition skills notebook was developed to aid parents in giving appropriate language stimulation and activities for their child's level of development, four to six years of age. In addition, positive home teaching techniques, positive home language hints, and a mini-language library bibliography are also available to guide the parent in appropriate home language intervention. Although the notebook will be used with language delayed children first, it is designed to be used with all children in the Lake Chelan Elementary Kindergarten in an attempt to stimulate better language skills, both receptive and expressive.

A Program For Parents In Children’S Literature And Prereading Activities, James Patrick Rogers

This project developed an educational program for parents of children in the lower economic classes. The program consisted of a series of workshops for parents to help them enrich the prereading background of their preschool and primary-grade children. The major emphasis was to acquaint parents with children's literature and with the importance of their role in the reading development of their children.

The Project Palatisha Developmental Checklist (PPDC) is a preschool screening instrument that is used by many different tribal Head Start programs throughout the western United States. An item analysis was made on the Cognitive, Fine Motor, and Language subtests of the PPDC. The sample population consisted of 202 children ages 3 through 5 who were enrolled in Head Start programs. The Head Start programs who participated were located on the Hualapai, Hopi, Salt River Pima-Maricopa, Makah, Quileute, Chehalis, and Yakima Indian Reservations. The purpose of this project was to develop a set of instructional materials that would provide classroom teachers with a motivational method for teaching the skill of following written directions. The set of 180 direction exercises provided practice in applying phonetic elements and structural analysis in the context of a reading activity. Comprehension skills were practiced through the development of key concepts, use of structural words, comparing and contrasting ideas, making appropriate judgments and teaching cognitive strategies. With daily use, the directions provided continuous practice in essential reading skills while eliciting observable consequent behaviors which implied language reception or comprehension.

A Four-Stage Program Of Enrichment In Reading For Gifted Junior High School Students, Mina Winifred Welch

The needs of gifted students and strategies for meeting those needs were studied. A four- stage enrichment model was designed, accompanied by a teacher's guide for implementation of a sample application of the model at the seventh grade level. The four stages of enrichment activities included in the model were (1) exploratory activities beyond the regular curriculum, (2) activities to develop critical reading and thinking skills, (3) activities for improvement of information-gathering skills, and (4) a mentorship phase.

The need for developing strategies for teaching in the content areas was examined and, as a result, a study guide was developed to aid students in understanding the content of the psychology textbook. Lessons were developed for each of four different chapters to serve as instructional tools for teaching the content of a specific psychology textbook. The problem was to determine whether selected psycholinguistic instructional aids were effective in remediating learning deficiencies among early elementary children (grades 1-3). Literature was reviewed to substantiate a need for the use of psycholinguistic instructional aids for remediation of learning deficiencies among early elementary children. Research surveyed included auditory perception skills, language skills, motor skills, and visual perception skills. Data were collected from test groups of students in grade levels one, two, and three. When considering specific instructional areas associated with the performance of teachers, do teachers and administrators in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) school system differ in their perceptions regarding the appropriateness of inservice education programs? Procedure. Three sample groups were derived from the population of SDA educators in California. These groups included: administrators at the district level; administrators in elementary and secondary schools; and elementary and secondary teachers. The purpose of this study was to compare the priority ratings given to evaluative criteria of four groups within the education profession--superintendents, secondary supervisors, secondary principals, and secondary teachers. The research sought to determine whether or not factors of agreement existed among the four groups of people regarding their attitudes toward important teacher characteristics. A total of fifty-two subjects from four occupational roles was used: thirteen superintendents, thirteen supervisors, thirteen principals, and thirteen teachers. The subjects were administered the Teacher Characteristics Q Sort, a ninety-item sort of adjectives. The results were factor analyzed, and four significant factors emerged. Factor A …

The problem was to determine the extent a selected parent education program influenced the oognitive and affective development of educationally deprived Appalachian pre-school children and to determine to what extent the program influenced the prime caregivers' assessment of the child's behavior. Subjects included 40 Appalachian prime caregivers and their children who participated in four intact home-based classes. They were randomly assigned to treatment by the teacher, in order to equate the home visitor case load.
