High-Ability Middle School Girls In Independent Schools, Maria Arellano Mar 2020

High-Ability Middle School Girls In Independent Schools, Maria Arellano

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Research shows that middle school is a critical time for gifted girls. There is much research as to why and the ways in which girls’ intellectual ambitions significantly wane during the middle school years, but not much on how to combat the issue. Whatever studies have been conducted in the area of gifted and talented female learners has been largely done in the public sector. Given the unique culture and practice of independent schools existing research on this topic in public schools does not provide a clear view of how independent schools are catering to their most highly able female …

Each team’s goal was to create and teach interdisciplinary curriculum units using U.S. English language arts Common Core State Standards with social studies and science. A year-long instrumental case study design was used to examine (a) how teachers perceived collaborative professional development to create interdisciplinary unit plans and (b) how teachers viewed outcomes of teaching interdisciplinary units of their own design. Practice articles regarding Common Core State Standards curricula integration are plentiful; however, …

Growth Mindset And The Gospel Community, Jillian Lederhouse

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Since publication in 2006, noted Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck’s research on mindset has influenced P-12 curriculum and instruction, helping pre-school, elementary and secondary educators create learning environments that help children and adolescents achieve more rigorous learning outcomes. This essay poses the question of whether it should create an equal impact on higher education, and, more specifically, on Christian teacher preparation programs. The article first reviews the differences between fixed and growth mindsets, misconceptions of the two, and how the two models affect learning at all levels. The essay then gives five scripturally grounded reasons for encouraging a growth mindset in …

Candidates reflect on their conceptions of literacy, teaching, identity and worldview within an institution grounded in the Christian faith. Findings, philosophical ponderings and content analysis suggest that the identity …

Groundings In Nature Mysticism And Adult Learning, Lee W. Nabb, Keith B. Armstrong Mar 2020

Groundings In Nature Mysticism And Adult Learning, Lee W. Nabb, Keith B. Armstrong

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Historically, American education has functioned as the benefactor and disseminator of nature education, although that role has diminished in direct proportion to the diminutive presence of American natural landscapes. This withdrawal has led many to adulthoods typically devoid of a sense of place on the planet, as well as potentially limiting the ability to experience the sublime or mystical insights of life. This discussion investigates an experiential, interdisciplinary-action approach, used at Yellowstone National Park and a Canadian wilderness project, that supports and informs the reintegration of nature for the sublime or mystical development of adult students in higher education.

The Pilot Shortage – From Student Pilots To The Atps, Joe Clark M.A.S. Mar 2020

The Pilot Shortage – From Student Pilots To The Atps, Joe Clark M.A.S.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Aviation is now facing an incredible pilot shortage, a shortage greater than anticipated in the past. Young pilots learned of the upcoming pilot shortage when told the World War II pilots were retiring, followed by the Korean aviators, then the jet jockeys of Vietnam. Somehow, those shortages never seemed to happen.

Today, it is a different story. According to statistics maintained by the Federal Aviation Administration, the number of active pilots dropped from more than 800,000 in 1980 to just over 633,000 in 2018. Over the course of those years, the numbers steadily declined with an occasional uptick over the …

Characterizing The Growth Of One Student's Mathematical Understanding In A Multi-Representational Learning Environment, Hilal Gulkilik, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, Hasan Huseyin Ugurlu, Nejla Yuruk

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to characterize the growth of one student’s mathematical understanding and use of different representations about a geometric transformation, dilation. We accomplished this purpose by using the Pirie-Kieren model jointly with the Semiotic Representation Theory as a lens. Elif, a 10th- grade student, was purposefully chosen as the case for this study because of the growth of mathematical understanding about dilation she exhibited over time. Elif participated in task-based interviews before, during and after participating in a variety of transformation lessons where she used multiple representations, including physical and virtual manipulatives. The results …

Supporting English Learners Through Practice-Based Research, Catherine Lammert, Erica B. Steinitz Holyoke Mar 2020

Supporting English Learners Through Practice-Based Research, Catherine Lammert, Erica B. Steinitz Holyoke

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Learning to use critical practice-based research as part of teaching is an important goal for preservice teachers, especially for those who plan to teach English learners in linguistically diverse settings. In this study, we examine the experiences of preservice teachers who were introduced to a framework for enacting iterative, transformative action research, and used the framework to study their own teaching in a one-on-one writing partnership with young English learners. Using an established self-efficacy survey instrument, as well as qualitative measures such as course artifacts and observations of teaching, we conducted a mixed-methods study to examine the impact of research …

Critical Factors For Effective And Equitable Ngss Science Teaching Practices, Elizabeth B. Lewis, Lyrica L. Lucas, Amy Tankersley, Elizabeth Hasseler, Brandon Helding

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Presentations

With the widespread adoption and adaption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and its implicit focus on inquiry-based instruction, reformed science teaching practices are critically important to meeting the U.S. vision of scientific literacy for all students. Thus, the role of teacher learning through both teacher preparation and professional development must be well understood and informed through empirical findings. Accordingly, the theme of this NARST conference paper set is to identify effective science teaching practices using the lens of the NGSS science and engineering practices (SEPs), science subject matter knowledge, and equitable teaching practices. We found that inquiry-based instruction …
