It is a matter of public record that the present system for educating Indian children attending de facto segregated Indian schools has failed to serve Indian schoolchildrens’ needs as evidenced by low academic achievement levels, accelerating over-age in grade level, and high drop-nut rates. This may be due in part to lack of knowledge regarding the cognitive strengths and learning styles of Indian children, although much appears in the literature regarding their weaknesses as associated with school readiness and academic accomplishment. The purpose of this study was to determine what changes in student teacher dogmatism and attitudes occurred during the student teaching experience as a function of the supervising teacher's dogmatism and attitudes as measured by the Rokeach Dogmatism Scale and the Minnesota Teacher Attitude Inventory.

The population for this study consisted of all students enrolled in education courses during the spring semester of 1974 who had not had field work in the public schools and all Secondary Education students enrolled in student teaching and their supervising teachers. The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyzes selected teacher and student variables pertaining to personal and background characteristics, perceptions, prefer­ences and achievement.

The study sample consisted of social studies teachers and their classes in 34 New Mexico rural or small-town schools. Most of t􀀏e selected schools have a relatively high enrollment of minority group, low socioeconomic status (SES) students. Subjects are 60 teachers and 1255 students, representing approximately one-fifth of the senior high population of the participating schools.

Th~ proactive interference (PI) release procedure was used in two experiments to assess encoding, differential encoding, and the relative: dominance of encoding attributes in children's short-term memory. The procedure consisted of Ss receiving a series of memory tests, each of which involved the recall of a triad of auditorily-presented words after a 14 second retention interval. The Ss in the experimental groups received four successive recall tests with triads of words which were homogeneous with respect to a given attribute. The model would classify dialectal variations in the areas of phonology, morphology and vocabulary. The design of this study included the development of a theoretical model based on field and documented research and validation by expert opinion. This is a study of the acquisition by children of one aspect of communicative competence, the ability to decide that certain kinds of language are more appropriate to speakers of one sex than the other. It was first established that adults had such competence, and then shown how children came to approximate it. The effect of modeling on the performance of rule-governed language behaviors of 208 male and female, Anglo and Chicano, sixth grade students was experimentally investigated. These students, from four elementary schools, were randomly assigned either to a no-model control group or to one of forty-eight experimental modeling groups. Live, audio-taped and written models, who were (or were characterized as) either adults or peers and Anglos or Chicanos, modeled sentences in response to twelve pictorial stimuli. This study analyzed student and school characteristics in an effort to see effects these characteristics might be having on students' feelings about school structure and alienation from school. Several student characteristics were compared with feelings about school structure perceived as bureaucratic. Identification of students by ethnic groups (Chicano and Anglo), socio-economic status (high, middle and low), and students' sex were considered important indicants of students' feelings toward school bureaucracy. The purpose of this study was to determine if biobehavioral correlates of PCM (WISC subtest) performance offered some promise in the diagnosis and prescription in the learning situation for southwest Native American students. The need for an approach of this kind was predicated on the effectiveness of current testing and labeling practices in "Indian education," and the fact that the southwest Native American student who attends off-reservation boarding schools is generally disadvantaged. Disadvantaged is defined as that state of anomie (Spilka, 1970) and poverty, malnutrition and disease, and family disorganization which char­acterizes the student population used in this study.

Chapter 1 provides a compilation of legal precedents that can be used in challenging existing oppressive school practices. The second chapter deals more specifically with the reality of oppression.
