In cloze procedure the reader must replace, with some degree of accuracy, the systematically deleted words. Responses to cloze deletions are influenced by the reader's understanding of syntax, morphology and lexical items.

Much of the cloze research which followed Wilson Taylor's first publication on the subject in 1953 has centered on methods of cloze construction as an evaluation instrument with emphasis on test validity, scoring and interpretation. Studies assessing the potential of cloze as an instructional device for improving reading skills are more recent and less conclusive.

The problem was to determine, on the basis of selected factors, whether there were differences in performance between high school hospitality cooperative education students and students who worked in the hospitality industry but who did not participate in a hospitality program.

The study sample consisted of students from two New Mexico and two Arizona high schools. Fifty-nine of the students were enrolled in 2 hospitality related cooperative education course. The remaining 49 students were working in fac hospitality industry but were not enrolled in a hospitality program.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the portrayal of American Indian characters found in children’s fictional literature. It sought to determine the kinds of characteristics most commonly attributed to American Indians in children’s stories; wether or not misinformation was present; wether or not stereotypes were used; and whether or not there were any changes in characterizations related to time periods. Differences in portrayals by Indian and non-Indian authors and by experienced and less experiences authors were also investigated.

Two passages of prose were selected and two cloze tests were constructed over each passage. The sequential type was constructed by a standard word-deletion procedure. In the scrambled type, the sentences of each passage of prose were systematically shuffled. There were 56 items in the sequential type of passage A, and the same 56 in scrambled order in A. The sample consisted of 36 subjects--18 males and 18 females--who were hospitalized patients at the Bernalillo County Mental Health Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Patients were asked to participate in the study upon admission, and were randomly assigned to groups of six to either of two control conditions or to an assertive training condition. It was hypothesized that reading strategies used by children from Spanish-speaking backgrounds reading in English are influenced by the facility in English of those children. Maturational levels of English structures used by two such children, one estimated by the teacher to be reading above grade level and one estimated by the teacher to be reading below grade level, were measured by transformational analysis. The use and effectiveness of reading strategies including sound/graphic systems, grammar, and meaning were determined for each reader.
