- Untreated behavior problems in elementary school students can result in a trajectory of negative life outcomes, which include more failed courses, lower grade point averages, increased absenteeism, and higher retention rates compared to other students (Wagner et al., 1993).

- Family-school partnerships and parental involvement in interventions and educational programs positively correlate with favorable outcomes for students, families, and teachers (e.g., Grolnick & Slowiaczek, 1994).

- Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC; Sheridan, Kratochwill, & Bergan, 1996; Sheridan & Kratochwill, in press) maintains promise as an evidence-based model for increasing ongoing, collaborative family-school interactions (Guli, 2005).

DeFiore (2006) provides a comprehensive review of elements that have shaped the state of special education in Catholic schools. The article speaks of the bishops’ vision without teeth and the theoretical support provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEIA). DeFiore discusses the demand for services that are not met because of a lack of resources, expertise, and funding. The article concludes by allowing that much has occurred over the past decade, but more is needed.

To meet this need, DeFiore states that diocesan and local leaders must face the challenge of inspiring the laity to …

Effective Letter Identification Activities For K-1 Children: A Handbook For Teachers, Luann Nicole Jensen Jun 2006

Effective Letter Identification Activities For K-1 Children: A Handbook For Teachers, Luann Nicole Jensen

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project is to provide K-1 teachers with a handbook of effective letter identification activities. Letter identification is a pre-requisite reading skill that students must have in order to be successful readers and to prevent reading difficulties later on. This handbook can be implemented by teachers of kindergarten or first grade children who need a letter identification intervention. The lessons in this project were developed to be paired with explicit, intensive teaching during the intervention to help remediate a child's weakness in identifying letters.

Aesthetic Knowing: Essential To The Development Of Heart And Mind., Laura Howzell-Young, Susan Daniels

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice

Children are biologically wired to experience their world through rich sensory, affective, aesthetic, and imaginal experiences. Children thirst for art, music and movement, and these modes are utilized widely to learn the varied languages of literacy: the alphabet, numbers, vocabulary, body-sense and more. Yet, in response to meeting higher and more prescribed standards at the elementary and secondary levels, there is a tendency to narrow the curriculum, to consider art and music expendable, to view social-emotional development as external to the schoolhouse. This narrowing is happening just as our global culture is moving again toward multiple kinds of communication: toward …

Pediatric School Psychology

-&#;With an increasing number of children with chronic health conditions, the concept of pediatric care has expanded from a primarily medical emphasis to one that is more comprehensive and includes the disciplines of psychology and education (Perrin, 1999).

-&#;Children with developmental disabilities experience symptoms that affect their physical, academic, behavioral, developmental, and social functioning; therefore, collaboration among interdisciplinary professionals is essential.

-&#;Pediatric school psychology represents an “emergence of a subspecialty” within school psychology and includes the competencies of both school psychology and health psychology (Power, DuPaul, Shapiro, & Parrish, 1995).

-&#;Pediatric school psychologists serve as a liaison …

Defining Quality In Early Childhood Settings: Experiences From The Field, Atiya Hussain, Audrey Juma

Book Chapters / Conference Papers

“The successful education of the child during her/his years of schooling and the participation of that child in society as an adult, depends to a greater degree upon the foundation laid during the early years” (Evans, Myers and IIfled, 2000, p.7). Research indicates that learning is crucial to development whereby knowledge, skills, attitudes and values are developed. Research from disciplines such as physiology, nutrition, health, sociology, psychology and education provide evidence indicating that the early years are crucial in terms of developing intelligence, personality and social behaviour of children. If children are not provided opportunities to communicate, learn and develop …

Introduction To Chinese Youth (With A Commentary), Jieying Xi, Yan Xia

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Different countries and fields of study differ in determining the age group of youth. Based on the census result from the National Bureau of Statistics and the situation of Chinese youth, the age group of youth is defined as those from 15 to 29 years old. Therefore, Chinese youth described in this chapter refers to the age group of 15-29 living in the Chinese mainland, not including youth from Hong Kong, Macao Special Administrative Regions and Taiwan Province. According to China’s fifth census conducted in 2000, the youth population in the Chinese mainland is 315 million, accounting for 25.36% of …

The Sustainment Of Early Childhood Teachers In The Classroom, Pamela A. Kilgallon Jan 2006

The Sustainment Of Early Childhood Teachers In The Classroom, Pamela A. Kilgallon

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The changing nature of teaching has led to an increased focus on the retention and productive engagement of teachers in the classrooms. The ongoing implementation of educational change, accompanied by an ageing trend amongst teachers and rising incidences of teacher attrition, stress and burnout, highlights the importance of teachers being sustained in their profession. Furthermore, recognition of the value of early childhood education has drawn attention to early childhood teachers' abilities to be sustained in their teaching practice, effectively engaging students in the learning process. Acknowledging these issues, this study examined factors that influence early childhood classroom teachers' sustainment in …

Kindergarten Readiness: Using Age Or Skills In Assessing A Child’S Readiness, Leslie Barden Smith Dec 2005

Kindergarten Readiness: Using Age Or Skills In Assessing A Child’S Readiness, Leslie Barden Smith

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Currently, age is the primary indicator of kindergarten readiness. A concise list of readiness skills to guide parents and teachers when deciding if a child is ready for kindergarten is lacking. The literature reveals that older age kindergarten entrance is not a predictor of academic success, nor is age an accurate indicator of readiness. In this study, responses from approximately 22 kindergarten teachers to a readiness questionnaire identify and develop a succinct list of the skills these professionals view as most significant for kindergarten readiness. According to the teachers in this study, the ability to sit and listen for approximately …

Relationships Between Consultation Training And Practice: Serving Families And Schools, Jennifer D. Burt, Stanley A. Garbacz, Susan M. Sheridan, Kathryn A. Black, Stephanie C. Olson

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Presentations

• Children and families face more challenges than at any time in recent history. For example, there are increasing numbers of children who live in poverty, and/or single-parent homes.

• Schools are being called to engage in deeper partnerships with parents and communities to address these complex needs (Ysseldyke et al., 1997).

• Consequently, home-school partnership models have become a top priority in the field of school psychology (Christenson, 2004; Ysseldyke et al., 1997).

• Additionally, indirect services are emphasized more than ever before, with data-based consultation models being recognized as an essential skill in the school psychologist’s repertoire (Sheridan …

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Presentations

• Conjoint behavioral consultation (CBC) is a structured, indirect model wherein a consultant works with a parent and teacher together to promote collaborative, problem-solving partnerships across home and school settings (Sheridan, Kratochwill, & Bergan, 1996). • Goals of CBC are to address child concerns shared by parents and teachers, enhance problem-solving skills of parents and teachers, and promote future home-school partnerships. • CBC has been shown to be effective in addressing a range of behavioral, social, and academic concerns (Kratochwill, Elliott, & Busse, 1998; Sheridan, Eagle, Cowan, & Mickelson, 2001) across home and school settings, and parents and teachers report …

A Study Of The Role Of Gender In The Classroom, Ryan Ann Malloy Jun 2005

A Study Of The Role Of Gender In The Classroom, Ryan Ann Malloy

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the role gender plays in the classroom, through considering both teacher and student perceptions of gender and how those perceptions impact student learning and socialization. Conducting my early research it became evident that the three underlying forces that allow gender to impact the classroom environment are socialization, individual perceptions, and instructional practices. In order to understand the true influence of gender in the classroom I incorporated a qualitative study on these three interrelated pieces to see how they came to life in an actual kindergarten classroom. Students took part in face-to-face interviews, …

An Investigation Of The Increase In Phonemic Awareness In Kindergarten Students Who Were Exposed To Word Sort Activities, Karen S. Münch

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if word sort activities would help improve the phonemic awareness of kindergarten students. The experimental and control groups consisted of students ranging in a variety of reading abilities. The experimental group received phonics instruction through the use of word sorting activities. The control group had no guidelines for phonics instruction. Any phonics lesson taught in the classroom were done according to the classroom instructors own plans and ideas. Pre-test and post-test scores showed that students that were exposed to word sort activities scored significantly higher on sound recognition tests then other students. …

The results of the Community Child Care Research Project provide new data describing the child care experiences of low income working families in 4 communities in Indiana. Because the study participants were volunteers rather than randomly selected, and because the research design was correlational rather than experimental, conclusions drawn from these fi ndings necessarily have limitations. The fi ndings cannot be confi dently generalized to other low income working families and child care providers, nor can the links between child care quality and children’s development be assumed to be causal. For example, while it is quite possible that higher quality …
