Identification Of The Presence Of The Restoration Concept In Seventh-Day Adventist Nursing Programs In The United States, L. Phil Hunt

Problem. In 1976 Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) nursing educational leaders adopted a statement of philosophy and goals that incorporated the concept of restoring humans to God's image. Although Adventist education was founded upon restoration themes, no empirical evidence indicates that nursing faculty and students perceive restoration as important or evident in nursing education today. It was the purpose of this study to determine the extent to which the concept of restoration is manifested in SDA nursing programs in the United States.

Method. Ten summary statements provide a definition of restoration consistent with the beliefs and teachings of the SDA church. An …

The impact of personality type on question preference is an area of new endeavor. It is the purpose of this study to determine if a relationship exists between the Sensing and Intuiting dimensions of personality as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the questioning preference of students. A Chi Square analysis of the data revealed a trend. Frequency distributions were used to determine the direction of the trend. Both the Sensing and the Intuiting subjects showed a tendency to follow type with regard to question preference. In other words those subjects showing a Sensing preference on the MBTI …

College choice is a critical decision facing many high school students. Although some research has examined where students go for help in making college choices, few studies have examined how race or gender differences of the students or differences in their standardized test scores affect their information sources. Entering college freshmen (N=3,708) indicated which ~f nine information sources (college students, friends, high school counselor, college publication, family, alumni, high school teacher, newspaper, tel~vision) they used in selecting a college.

Responses were analyzed separately for females and males, blacks and whites, in each of four American College Testing (ACT) score categories. …

Depo-Provera has been a scientific and political battleground for over twenty years. At stake have been the reproductive health of women, the marketing of a long-acting contraceptive by a multinational corporation, and international family planning and population control. Seventy nations have approved its use as a female contraceptive, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not, because the drug is a suspected carcinogen. FDA's decision means marketing of Depo-Provera as a contraceptive is forbidden in the United States and in U.S. foreign aid programs. Between 1965 and 1974, the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) spent in excess of $2 billion. Since 1974, that figure has climbed to more than $4 billion, with the bulk of these funds spent for road building and vocational schools. Despite this outpouring of funds, many in the region have never heard of the ARC. Part of the problem is ARC's lack of credibility, caused by less than spectacular results.

The Effects Of Genre And Tone On Undergraduate Students Preferred Patterns Of Response To 2 Short-Stories And 2 Poems, Jane Ann Zaharias

To assess the effects of textual variation on students' preferred patterns of literary response, 166 college undergraduates were asked to read two poems and two short stories. They then completed a modified version of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement's Response Preference Measure for each literary work. Data from the response preference inventories were analyzed by means of a two-factor repeated-measurement MANOVA, with genre and tone as the within-subjects variables. Significant main effects were obtained for both genre and tone. The genre x tone interaction was, however, not significant. As a follow-up, a series of 2 x …

Two reports offer insight into the personality and working conditions of the Kentucky Coal miner. Dr. George E. Dickinson's survey measures death anxiety among miners; Dr. Stuart S. Sprague's correlated report tracks the often volatile effort to legislate and enforce safety regulations. Both reports arrive at one perhaps startling conclusion: many miners agree - and are somewhat supported by statistics - that they themselves are most frequently to blame for accidents.

The primary purpose of this study was to identify factors limiting student participation in supervised occupational experience (SOE) programs in Nebraska, as perceived by Nebraska vocational agriculture instructors. Specific objectives included:

1. Identify SOE-related characteristics of Nebraska vocational agriculture instructors.
2. Determine the Importance of selected school district, vocational agriculture, economic, student, and social factors in limiting student participation in SOE.
3. Determine differences among factors limiting student participation in SOE by length of contract, number of SOE on-site instructional visits per year, hours employed, in addition to vocational agriculture duties and years of teaching experience.

This guidebook was produced for participants of the Sixth Gondwana Symposium held at the Institute of Polar Studies in August 1985. The trip traverses the highly scenic Appalachian Plateau. Enroute to eastern Kentucky, nonmarine sandstone, mudstone, coal, and limestone of the Upper Carboniferous to Permian (?) Dunkard Group, and Upper Carboniferous Monongahela and Conemaugh Formations will be examined in southern Ohio and western West Virginia. Health and welfare are usually considered secondary or peripheral concerns of modern society. The article considers how questions about the provision of social welfare are imbedded in the economic, social, moral, and political fabric of contemporary America and New England. Underlying trends of economic, social, and attitudinal change are outlined, and implications for the future are considered. The article also considers the role of universities in equipping the next generation of citizens to cope more effectively with the complex issues that are forcing a restructuring of urban services.

Within the last 10 years considerable attention has been given tot he effects of personality type on teaching and learning. Nearly 700 studies have been completed, but few have involved students of agriculture. Lawrence (1982) has stated that one of the greatest problems of American education today is the failure to recognize the unique learning needs of differing personality types.

Specific recommendations were proposed for college and university administrators' application to maximize academic faculty and administrator job satisfaction.
