Transforming Black Students’ Higher Education Experiences And Lives: A Proposal For The Csu, Don Lundy
Transforming Black Students’ Higher Education Experiences And Lives: A Proposal For The Csu, Don Lundy
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
For decades, a racial “achievement gap” has persisted in U.S. higher education. Specifically, White students have outperformed Black students on a number of indicators, including college admissions, standardized test scores, and graduation rates. This graduate project considers several explanations for this persistent inequity. The root of the problem, it argues, is U.S. higher education’s history of racism and exclusion and the oversaturation of whiteness in these institutions. In other words, U.S. higher education was built for and continues to serve White students at the expense of Black students. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) show us that when whiteness is …

Language Ideologies In First Year Composition Textbooks, Joanna Clevenger
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This thesis examines how standard language ideologies are perpetuated in the five most frequently assigned first year composition textbooks from four higher education institutions in Southern California’s Inland Empire. Standard language ideologies position one variation of a language as superior, correct, appropriate and the normal variation of a language which everyone should be able to speak. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, the five textbooks were analyzed in order to uncover the embedded power and hegemony over women, people of color, and those from a lower socioeconomic status which are prevalent throughout society because they are unchallenged and widely accepted as the …

Radicalizing First Year Composition: A Novice Educator’S Venture Into Revolutionary Teaching, Xochilt Trujillo Flores
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This project is based on my experiences and reflections as a novice instructor on implementing educational practices which center a critical, feminist, anti-racist pedagogical approach in a first year composition course. Using my own experiences of teaching FYC as a central focus, this project will collect data through teacher-reflective journals. Those journals will be focused on how radical pedagogy shapes my approaches to teaching and how I experience/implement that approach in my day-to-day practices. In doing so, this project aims to address the persistent gap between theory and practice, particularly in the context of novice educators’ experiences in a …

Examination Of Experiential Phenomena Influencing Culinary Educators’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Danny Babin
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study aimed to explore the theory of expert teaching by comparing culinary educators at the secondary and postsecondary levels based on their varying levels of experience. Experience for culinary educators included pre-service teacher training, in-service teacher training, professional industry experience, and teaching experience. The primary goal of this descriptive phenomenological study was to examine the impact professional experience has on culinary educators’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). Distinctions in PCK include collective PCK, personal PCK, and enacted PCK. PCK theory has been an integral part of educational research for over three decades; it has been studied, refined, and implemented into …
Engaged Social Media In Higher Education While Avoiding The Label Of "Striving", Jessica Nerren
Engaged Social Media In Higher Education While Avoiding The Label Of "Striving", Jessica Nerren
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
Striving has become a word laden with problematic meanings in the world of higher education. For instance, if a university is too aligned with business, or becomes overly selective, or deviates from original purpose or mission, then, at times, those actions are seen as striving (O’Meara, 2007). O’Meara (2007) defines striving as participation in efforts to improve status and prestige in line with the hierarchy. Allen (2021) echoes the problematic nature of this practice witnessed abroad, equating striving educational practices with neoliberalism, potentially overshadowing primary purposes of the institution, such as learning and teaching, or drowning out important parts of …
Into The College Classroom, Another Tour Of Duty: A Guide For Instructors Of Veteran Students In Higher Education, Steven Dewalden
Into The College Classroom, Another Tour Of Duty: A Guide For Instructors Of Veteran Students In Higher Education, Steven Dewalden
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Concepts found in organizational socialization and culturally responsive pedagogy, were used in this project. The focus was on the veteran population who are leaving the unique organizations of the military to transition into higher education. Differences in socialization techniques used by the military and higher education are vastly different and contribute to unique outcomes for the new members. In this project, veterans were represented as a unique culture to consider in the classrooms of higher education as instructors prepare to use a culturally responsive approach to teaching. This project was created using an autoethnographic process using self-reflection through a narrative …

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) Course in Effective Teaching Practices, a nine-month online module certification program, provides an opportunity to learn how to design courses, engage learners, and establish a productive learning environment in both online and face-to-face teaching format. Upon completion of each module, course participants reflected on technique chosen, successes and/or challenges, and plans for implementation.

The primary goals of participating in this conference were to enhance my teaching skills by:
1) exploring emerging tools and instructional strategies to develop adaptive learning; and
2) more specifically, investigating ways to develop personalized learning, micro-learning, and gamification using various adaptive technology tools and learning analytics.
This provided an opportunity for me to improve my understanding of theoretical models and practical guidelines for the developing adaptive online learning course activities that facilitate increase students’ engagement and motivation.
Smart Sparrow, Knewton, DreamBox, and ScootPad were studied at the AERA conference. Smart Sparrow is the tool that is flexible and can …

In this report, I share the main Teaching Skills Practices I learned during presentations I attended at the Mathematics Joint Meetings (Denver, January 15 - 18, 2020). It was a great opportunity to attend presentations on best practices and considerations in designing and developing math courses, ideas and innovations in teaching, and inquiry-based learning and teaching. Attending these presentations is helping me keep improving my teaching practices to better improve the learning experiences of my students, and is helping me (as the coordinator of college algebra/precalculus courses) to further improve our College Algebra Stretch Courses and Support Labs.
Eportfolios As A High Impact Practice, Neal Malik
Eportfolios As A High Impact Practice, Neal Malik
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
An e-portfolio has been recognized as a High Impact Practice (HIP). High Impact Practices are defined as “educational experiences that are meaningful, require student action and participation, and contribute to the life-long learning of the student.” (AACU, 2019, ¶2). Preliminary research has revealed that students that engage in HIPs are more likely to achieve higher grades, more readily retain and transfer information, and may narrow equity gaps (Kuh, Gambino, Ludvik, & O’Donnell, 2008). An e-portfolio is an interactive personal digital archive that may contain artifacts (such as resumes, curricula vitae, personal statements, etc.) or examples of achievements (such as projects, …

A modified model of legibility vis-a-vis salon session was adapted for use my class, immediately, after attending the conference. Also, I took two students from my Winter Quarter class (Anth 301, Anthropological Theory) to the conference held that Spring Quarter 2019. They presented their research papers completed in Anth 301. In two of my Spring Quarter courses, I applied the modified model, by pairing student partners who were asked in sequential order to kick off the discussion, which then opened up to engage all students into the participatory process. The idea of running discussions like mini salon sessions (salon sessions …

The National Conference on Higher Education in Prison (NCHEP) is one of the largest gatherings of prison educators in the country. Over the course of four days, the NCHEP featured workshops that examine the best practices in prison education. I attended workshops on starting higher education in prison programs, fundraising and grant writing, strategic planning, fostering collaborative learning, using technology in the prison classroom, handling the emotional challenges of teaching in prison, and meeting accreditation standards.
