Intellectual Humility And The Art Of Disagreement At The Christian College, James S. Spiegel

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Education at a Christian college properly features both honest inquiry and unwavering allegiance to core theological standards, such as those embodied in the classical creeds. This combination of commitments can create tension for the Christian educator, as insistence upon doctrinal allegiance can inadvertently reinforce dogmatic attitudes so common among late adolescents. In this paper I discuss the virtue of intellectual humility and its importance for combating student dogmatism in an atmosphere of steadfast Christian commitment. After distinguishing between theological essentials and disputable matters, I discuss philosophical and theological grounds for being intellectually humble. And I illustrate ways in which faculty …

In this paper, the process in which both project-based curriculum strategies and Blackboard web-based technology were utilized to develop on-line methods courses to prepare science teachers is described. A discussion of the curriculum design process includes a rationale for using project-based instruction in methods courses, along with a rationale for using Blackboard, a web-based technology, as the environment for the course. The course‘s potential for creating highly qualified science teachers as defined by the No Child Left Behind legislation of 2001 and the National Science Teacher Association‘s Standards for Science Teacher Preparation will be explored [1].

The initiation of the Virginia Commonwealth University B.S. in Science program was reported in this journal Fall 1999 as a program designed to meet the academic content major of a teacher preparation program for elementary and middle school mathematics and science teachers [1]. This paper reports the current status of the interdisciplinary B.S. in Science degree program including program enrollment data and trends. Also described are refinements in the required curriculum, which include a newly developed geometry, a mathematical computing course, and an emerging teaching technology course featuring graphing calculators, CBLs, and computer software applications.

This paper describes the DEEP in Math Program developed in the academic year 1998-1999 from a collaborative effort of the Louisiana Systemic lnitiative Program (LaSlP) and the Louisiana Department of Education (LDE). It includes evidence of impressive results in low achieving schools and in high-poverty districts targeted by the effort. This paper describes the analysis of socio-eeonomic factors in correlation to standardized educational test scores. The scores used were from the Elementary School Proficiency Assessment exam distributed to fourth graders in New Jersey during the years 1999, 200l- 2003 [1-4]. The socio—economie factors are from the 2000 United States Census [5]. Simple regression and other statistical equations were used to compare the data from both sources with Microsoft Excel as a programming tool to perform the analysis.

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

All accredited institutions in the United States that are involved in distance learning initiatives need to be concerned about how their programs and courses will be viewed by accreditation organizations. A review of the policies of several major accreditation associations and professional groups, national, regional and specialized, yields similar results when issues of distance learning are concerned. These requirements are reviewed. Virtually all accreditors require evidence of regular assessment processes. Alternative methods for conducting these assessments are proposed.

Proximal Factors Predicting Student Performance In A Self-Paced College Psychology Course, Ronald L. Skidmore

This study examined the effectiveness of using selected self-report measures assessing motivational orientation, learning strategies, procrastination, and perceptions of daily hassles to facilitate the prediction of student engagement in a self-paced introductory psychology course. Research has shown these factors to be associated with academic success, and of concern to instructors and students alike. Surveys that economically and effectively assess these factors would be invaluable for the instructor attempting to predict student engagement and determining possible interventions to promote academic success. Four surveys purporting to measure the constructs were chosen. A demographic survey was also administered.

This study was conducted to establish baseline information about Ivy Tech State College academic chairs’ personal/background characteristics and to determine those chairs’ rating of the importance of their tasks and their perceptions of the job challenges they will face in the future. In addition, the study compared Ivy Tech chairs’ personal/ background characteristics and perceptions of their tasks and job challenges with the findings of the 1992 International Community College Chair Survey. A multi-disciplinary project entitled ‘New Managerialism and the Management of UK Universities’ was conducted by a team of researchers based at Lancaster University between October 1998 and November 2000. The study was funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (grant no R000237661).
