The Impact Of Elementary Mathematics Specialists, P. F. Campbell, N. N. Malkus Jan 2010

The Impact Of Elementary Mathematics Specialists, P. F. Campbell, N. N. Malkus

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Elementary Mathematics Specialists are placed in schools to construct leadership roles and to provide on-site professional development addressing mathematical content and pedagogy in order to enhance instruction and to improve student achievement. A three-year, randomized, control study found that, over time, Specialists had a significant positive impact on student achievement in Grades 3, 4, and 5. This effect on student achievement was not evident at the conclusion of the Specialist's first year of placement. It emerged as knowledgeable Specialists gained experience and as the schools' instructional and administrative staffs learned and worked together. Specialists who were highly engaged with a …

Early Algebra And Mathematics Specialists, M. K. Murray

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This paper discusses early algebra as it relates to the Mathematics Specialist program. Early algebra is described based on research and readings from the body of literature focused on early algebra. Reasons why early algebra should be emphasized in elementary school mathematics are discussed, followed by a description of the role elementary school Mathematics Specialists must play if schools are to begin to focus on early algebraic instruction. Finally, some suggestions are made for ways the Mathematics Specialist program might encourage more explicitly an early algebraic approach to elementary school mathematics.

Will Peer Review Still Function And How?, Sheri Spaine Long Jan 2010

Will Peer Review Still Function And How?, Sheri Spaine Long

College of Arts & Sciences Professional Work

Editors of scholarly journals increasingly use web-based peer review and tracking systems to offer enhanced speed, communication, automation and a complete record of submissions and peer review history. Such digital tools are likely to increase frequency of revisions and ultimately lead to a higher quality published article. However, with the larger and ever more dispersed reviewer pool that is facilitated by web-based systems, there is less reliance on elite reviewers. Therefore, there is more pressure on editors to assign manuscripts for review appropriately due to more peer reviewers, academic globalization, and the inherent depersonalization of the digital editorial assistant.

Child Care Centers On Higher Education Campuses: Director Perceptions Of Internal And External Roles And Director Leadership, Kerisa A. Myers

Dissertations

An increasing focus on early childhood education and brain research offers a prime opportunity for higher education institutions to research and formulate thought concerning quality child care. Currently, there is limited research examining the impact and roles of child care centers on university campuses. To add to the base of knowledge, this nationally-focused study examined the following broad question: "what value do campus child care centers offer to a given higher education institution and its surrounding community, especially from a center director's perspective?"

An on-line survey was sent to over 400 campus child care directors at two- and four-year public …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Douglas McGregor (1960) a thinker, leader, management and leadership theorist postulated over three decades ago that every leader has core assumptions about human nature and these assumptions influence the style of leadership practiced by the leader. McGregor’s views on leadership are important because he was the first to apply behavioural science findings to the world of business and leadership. He postulated the core leadership assumptions (Theory X and Theory Y) to assist leaders question their underlying assumptions and perceptions about people.

Educator Perceptions Toward The Iep Meeting, Wade Fish

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The individualized education program (IEP) was the primary component of Part B of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975. Through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA 2004), the IEP has continued to direct the educational needs, goals and objectives, placement, evaluation criteria, present levels of educational performance, and duration of programming modifications for students receiving special education services (Drasgow, Yell, & Robinson, 2001; 20 U.S.C. § 1400). The IEP functions as the blueprint for services to be provided for students, as IEP regulations identify meeting dates, parental and student consent and accountability, as well as …

Illuminating Adolescent Voices: Identifying High School Students’ Perceptions Of Teacher Caring, Ruben Garza, Gail Ryser, Kathryn Lee

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The purpose of the current study was to identify teacher behaviors that secondary students perceived as demonstrating caring. The questions that guided this inquiry were (a) what teacher behaviors do high school students perceive as caring? and (b) what teacher behaviors do high school students perceive as the most important aspects of caring? Whereas previous studies clearly have documented the power and influence of caring teachers on adolescents’ success, we posit that knowing what students perceive as caring behaviors can be used as a springboard to shape the context of caring for all students, especially those who are marginalized, feel …

Educational Restructuring And The Policy Process: The Toronto District School Board 1997-2003, Duncan Maclellan

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

This paper will examine the seminal events leading up to passage of the Fewer School Boards Act (Bill 104), and its impact on the newly created Toronto District School Board (TDSB). While the focus of this paper will be on Bill 104, it is important to note that significant structural changes needed to occur in Toronto and its neighbouring municipalities before Bill 104 could take effect. To facilitate these changes, the Ontario government introduced and passed Bill 148 An Act to Establish a New City of Toronto. Bill 148 amalgamated the City of Toronto with the surrounding cities of East …

Hiring, Promoting, And Valuing Non-Tenure Track Faculty, Kathleen Williams, Karen Poole, Vicki Macready

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Non-tenure track faculty comprise an increasing percentage of full time faculty employed by American universities. In 2001, the Association of American Universities (AAU) reported that 31% of full and part-time faculty were non-tenure track. According to a 2006 report by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), full-time non-tenure track faculty increased from 13% to 18.7% of total faculty between 1975-2003. These faculty often serve in most of the same roles as tenure track faculty, including teaching, research and service. At the same time, they are nearly always paid less, have fewer benefits, few opportunities for research leaves or sabbaticals, …

Identifying And Alleviating Stress Of Teacher Candidates In A Secondary Professional Development Schools (Pds) Program, Molly Mee

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Teacher candidate stress is a significant issue for candidates, students, mentor teachers, and the Institute of Higher Education (IHE) representatives who work with the candidates. Stress during this important stage in a new teacher’s career can be detrimental in many ways from causing early burnout (Greer & Greer, 1992; Schwab, 1989) to attrition (Brownell, 1997) and absenteeism. “It is during student teaching that preservice teachers begin to learn the habits of the profession and begin to develop adaptive or maladaptive coping skills for dealing with the stress of teaching” (Gold, 1985; Greer & Greer, 1992 as cited in Fives, Hamman, …

Leadership As Imagery: Creating Your Picture Of The Future, Kerri Mckenna Oct 2009

Leadership As Imagery: Creating Your Picture Of The Future, Kerri Mckenna

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

After several years of bi weekly faculty meetings, I had had my fill of “School Leaders” dictating and telling us what needed to be done in order to meet state standards, raise test scores and improve student attendance. Each week we had a “new idea” tossed at us from above with the same fervor and enthusiasm that I shared with my students about writing. And, each week, my over loaded brain walked out of the faculty meeting criticizing the fact that I was being told what to do, but not why it was important that I did it. The constant …

Leading Faculty: Understanding The Connection Between Goals And Values, Frank Grosso Oct 2009

Leading Faculty: Understanding The Connection Between Goals And Values, Frank Grosso

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Faculty can never do enough. We need them to teach, write, advise, mentor, network, and conduct groundbreaking research. And when we are faced with extremely limited budgets, hiring freezes, and increased pressure to bring in research funds, university faculty are counted on to pick up the fallen pieces. Academic leaders find themselves asking faculty to give more time and effort to assist in advancing their institutions, but at what price? Typically, as leaders demand more of the faculty, morale tends to decrease and grumbling skyrockets. In actuality, it is like that in any organization. However, it is no secret that …

Potential Extensions To Transformational Leadership Models, C.R.A. Jackson Oct 2009

Potential Extensions To Transformational Leadership Models, C.R.A. Jackson

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The view adopted in this research was that transformational leadership (Bass 1985; Burns 1978) could be characterised by an ability to bring about significant change in an organization, and that transactional leadership above was inadequate for this task. Since the 1980s, research (Avolio & Bass 2002; Bass 1990; Parry 1996) supported the idea that transformational leadership was more effective than transactional leadership in generating the extra effort, commitment and satisfaction of those being led (Bass 1990). Transformational leadership was a process where leaders and followers raised one another to higher moral and motivational levels (Yukl 1971). As Bass (1990) asserted, …
