The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of a phonetic reading approach, namely that published by the Economy Company, with a traditional basal reading approach upon reading achievement in the primary grades of the Peter G. Schmidt Elementary School, in Tumwater, Washington. A secondary purpose of the study was to compare the effects of the two approaches on spelling achievement in the second and third grades in the Peter G. ·Schmidt Elementary School.

An Investigation Of Five Basic Reading Programs At The Third Grade Level For Instruction In Contextual And Structural Clue Techniques Of Word-Meaning Attack, Jeanne G. Nurding

The purpose of this study was to examine five basic reading programs at the third grade level to identify instructional lessons presented in two categories of context clues and three types of structural clues. The two categories of contextual clues were word clues and typographical clues. The three types of structural clues were prefixes, suffixes, and inflectional endings. Identification of the variety of clues and frequency of clue lessons in each textbook series and the similarities and differences in presentation among series was also considered an important part of the purpose for this study.

Over the years, teachers and administrators alike have struggled with teaching orthography, the conventions and rules of spelling. In particular, teachers in Prince William County in Virginia have struggled with how to teach orthography in their junior high schools. In the past, various orthography techniques they’ve used have failed to meet the needs of their students. This thesis analyzes the effect of an in-service program in Marsteller Junior High School to improve the orthography instruction in their schools.

It was believed by this writer that it would be impossible to establish a degree program which would fulfill the needs of and satisfy all students. For this reason; it was impossible to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of the requirements for a Master's degree. The task of this research was to determine the effectiveness of the Neurological Impress Method of reading instruction with these kinds of students. The purpose of this study is to determine whether second grade children from a low socio-economic area, taught with the use of flat pictures and the interpretation of such pictures to build vicarious experiences in the social studies program in correlation with other subject areas, will achieve as well as, or better than, second grade children from the same economic area who will be taught without such an abundant use of flat pictures.

Part I consists of a survey of the 1962-1963 curriculum offerings in speech and hearing therapy available to the student majoring in elementary education at eleven of the accredited institutions of higher learning in the State of Washington.
