It was the purpose of this study (1) to compare the cost of textbooks for grades one through six for the first class school districts in the State of Washington; (2) to establish an ideal textbook budget for optimum learning; (3) to find the useful life of a textbook as limited by durability and need for revision in certain subject areas, and (4) to investigate storage procedures, particularly central storage versus individual building storage, to determine the most efficient use of the basic and supplemental texts owned by a district.

It was the purpose of this study: (1) to trace the historical development, through various levels, of the certification of professional educational personnel in New Mexico; (2) to note the extent to which the schools of the state had reached or exceeded state-prescribed standards for their educational personnel from 1912 to 1958; and (3) to use widely accepted factors which may indicate whether improved educational levels in the state had accompanied higher certification requirements. In the year 1950, public laws 815 and 874 were formally added to the federal statutes through action by the Congress of the United States. This legislation provided federal funds to public schools under conditions which enabled and encouraged their integration of Indian students. Overall, such integration was advantageous to Indian groups. Since the 1920's the conviction that Indians learned better in the public schools, where there was increased contact with the majority culture, had been growing. It was the first purpose of this study to investigate a considerable group of elementary school pupils with the intention of determining the measurable growth in reading ability during a seven-month period of instruction. The second purpose of this study was to determine whether or not a significant difference existed in the amount of reading growth between the unilinguals of the sampling and the bilinguals. The third purpose of the study was to identify specific areas of weakness in reading and either to make appropriate recommendations for their corrections or to point out the area of indicated research.
