The following paper is a report describing a TEFL teacher training program taught to the International Career Training students at the School for International Training, Brattleboro, Vermont. It includes : a two-week detailed lesson plan of classroom activities for module participants, a description of their practice-teaching with sample lesson plans and evaluations, participants' evaluations of the course, suggestions for improvement of future modules, and administrative details involved in setting up a course of this type on the SIT campus.

This paper presents a study of the present use of auxiliary personnel in media centers in Washington State public schools. These findings along with documents received from school districts, the review of literature, and related knowledge of the field were used as a basis for the development of guidelines relating to selecting, employing, assigning, training, and evaluating of media aides.

The proposed guidelines are presented to aid school district administrators in developing their own policies and procedures relating to media auxiliary personnel.

A Survey Of Elementary School Principals Attitudes Regarding The Effectiveness Of The Association Of Washington School Principals In Professional Negotiations, David Holmes Adams

This study was made to gain information pertinent to assessing the effectiveness of the Association of Washington School Principals in meeting the needs of its members who are elementary school principals. The study indicated that a majority of the respondents felt that Association was doing an adequate job. However, a significant relationship was found to exist between principals from small districts and the feeling of inadequate representation.

Due to the newness of this Association, it is recommended that a similar study be done in the future.

The purpose of this study was to discover which professional organization structure would best provide optimum conditions for Washington State's middle school principals to develop the middle school concept.

A questionnaire was used to determine if middle school principals desired the formation of a separate middle school principals' association. These principals indicated that they did not desire such an association. By majority, the middle school principals chose the Washington Association of Junior High & Middle School Principals to represent them.

This study introduced a nine week course of consumer mathematics in a seventh grade mathematics class in a consolidated junior high school in central New Mexico. The effect of modeling on the performance of rule-governed language behaviors of 208 male and female, Anglo and Chicano, sixth grade students was experimentally investigated. These students, from four elementary schools, were randomly assigned either to a no-model control group or to one of forty-eight experimental modeling groups. Live, audio-taped and written models, who were (or were characterized as) either adults or peers and Anglos or Chicanos, modeled sentences in response to twelve pictorial stimuli. Each of the modeled sentences contained semantically related valuational-preference categories, a prepositional phrase and a relative clause. The deficit approach to the verbal abilities of poor children has attempted to show that the verbal acuity of these children is extremely low or nonexistent, and that this disadvantage is a direct result of factors residing within the poor child and his environment. In response to this, current research has indicated that poor children tend to develop dual registers of responsiveness: one essentially nonverbal and/or nonsensical for use in threaten­ing, authority-directed situations (asymmetrical), and one highly verbal and articulate for use in nonthreatening, informal situations (symmetrical). This study analyzed student and school characteristics in an effort to see effects these characteristics might be having on students' feelings about school structure and alienation from school. Several student characteristics were compared with feelings about school structure perceived as bureaucratic. Identification of students by ethnic groups (Chicano and Anglo), socio-economic status (high, middle and low), and students' sex were considered important indicants of students' feelings toward school bureaucracy. Other characteristics operating within students themselves were studied as possible clues to how students adapt to the school's organizational structure. The first major objective for this investigation was to study the historical development of the undergraduate program in teacher education in the Department of Elementary Education at the University of New Mexico. The second major objective was to show the direction in which the Department appears to be going along with a rationale for that movement.

The purpose of this study was to determine if biobehavioral correlates of PCM (WISC subtest) performance offered some promise in the diagnosis and prescription in the learning situation for southwest Native American students. The need for an approach of this kind was predicated on the effectiveness of current testing and labeling practices in "Indian education," and the fact that the southwest Native American student who attends off-reservation boarding schools is generally disadvantaged. Disadvantaged is defined as that state of anomie (Spilka, 1970) and poverty, malnutrition and disease, and family disorganization which char­acterizes the student population used in this study.

The primary purpose of this study was to field test an application of Iannaccone's political linkage typology. Iannaccone conceptualized a state’s educational political linkage pattern by formulating a typology of educational­political processes. The fourfold typology includes the following: (1) Type I, Locally-based disparate, (2) Type II, State-wide monolithic, (3) Type III, State-wide fragmented, and (4) Type IV, State-wide syndical. Previous research has shown both vocal and visual cues are utilized in stereotyping. Studies dealing with stereotypes in the classroom suggest that teachers' stereotypes of students' ethnic and social class backgrounds affect both their expectations for students and their evaluations of them. Chapter 1 provides a compilation of legal precedents that can be used in challenging existing oppressive school practices. The second chapter deals more specifically with the reality of oppression. Words and formulations in Washington take on new dimensions when they reach Beeville, Texas. The third chapter examines the goals and definitions of current bilingual/bicultural programs. The structure of the verb prefix system in the Navajo verb is clarified by a thorough generative phonological analysis of the morphophonemic alternations in the prefix complex. The intricate modal prefix alternations are presented in detail. Initially, an important internal boundary in the verb, the disjunct boundary, is demonstrated. The disjunct boundary is central to the formulation of a number of common phonological rules such as ni-absorption and vowel deletion, and it provides the organizing principle for a full structural statement of the mode system. The present study was an investigation of the sources of job attitudes of school superintendents. The study sample consisted of forty of the eighty-eight superintendents in the State of New Mexico. Demographic data indicated that the sample approximated the national group of school superintendents along several important dimensions, including age, experience, and formal preparation.

The study utilized as its conceptual base the Herzberg Dual-Factor Theory of job satisfaction. The present investigation intended to study conformity of Chinese and Americans in several different situations through three independent experiments conducted in Taipei, Taiwan and in Albuquerque, New Mexico, based on the paradigm adapted from imitation studies. The purposes of this study were: (1) to change the behavior of selected children by training their mothers to implement an interaction style known as the professional response through providing corrective feedback, pointing out salient attributes, supplying elaboration and extending knowledge and (2) to assess the effects of those behavior changes on teacher-child language interactions. The null hypothesis stated that following the training of experimental group mothers, their children's interactions with the teacher would not differ significantly from those of control group children whose mothers received no training.
