The Linguistic, Cultural, And Developmental Considerations Inheritent In The Design And Implementation Of An Esl Program For Navajo Children At Borrego Pass School, Charles E. Hancock

MA TESOL Collection

This paper examines the considerations - linguistic, cultural, and developmental - which should be considered in the design and implementation of an ESL program appropriate to the settings of a bilingual-bicultural education program and to the needs of Navajo children. The process of language development in both first and second language learning is related to the design of learning activities and sequencing of language objectives. Observations of learning styles and language usage as provided by the culture, the individual, and by his peers as they relate to the development of a bilingual Navajo child are examined. The paper discusses the …

A Critique Of Language Learning And Theory In The Audio-Lingual Method Of Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Stephen Gregory Hanchey Jan 1974

A Critique Of Language Learning And Theory In The Audio-Lingual Method Of Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Stephen Gregory Hanchey

MA TESOL Collection

In this paper I investigate the claims on which many present ESL methods are based and examine them in view of recent developments in both learning theory and linguistics. There are reasons to think that the audio-lingual method is grounded in inadequate theories of learning and linguistics; if so, this warrants experiments in new methods and re-examination of such currently acceptable teaching methods as repetition, imitation, and pattern practice. In particular, I examine the practices of the audiolingual method which are based on behaviorist and structural linguistic theories, especially those practices which are extensions of theories about child language acquisition, …

The Foreign Professional Institute Of Language Instruction As A Prospective Place Of Employment: Berlitz As A Focal Case Study: Boon Or Brothel, Paul E. Soroken

MA TESOL Collection

Do foreign professional institutes of language instruction offer a viable prospect of employment for the trained ESL teacher? Taking Berlitz as a focal example, many of the more salient features of this organization have been pointed out and additional comments added where attributes of other institutes with which the author is acquainted vary.

Certainly these institutes show some variance but many attributes remain stable. The prospective employee is urged to know well exactly which aspects pointed out in this paper exist in the particular institute he is considering.

The reactions and feelings of other teachers who have been in the same teaching …

Report On Supplementary Esl Reading Course, David B. Hopkins

MA TESOL Collection

The ESL Reading course described in this report was conducted for Latin American scholarship students during the summer of 1973 at the School for International Training. Since it was intended to be a supplement to the regular classes of these students, every effort was made to allow the course direction to develop according to the needs of the participants. Although the original thrust of the program was to focus upon reading attitudes, utilizing the reading interests of the students, a parallel focus on reading skills evolved. I believe that the program achieved some success by offering both the satisfaction of …
