Oracle: A Game Of Cultural Awareness, Allyn Willey-Billings

The purpose of this project is to promote meaningful cross-cultural communication in the ESL classroom. As a game, ORACLE works on various levels. The most obvious area is more effective language use through reading, speaking and writing. As a tool for culturalawareness, it reveals participants' underlying impressions/prejudices of one another as well as working on their ability to listen beyound the words spoken to the personality beneath. Its intent is the enrichment of people through cooperation and the understanding of the unpredictable nature of Humankind.

Participation theatre provides a creative and valuable experience for the primary school child. The attitude and involvement of the classroom teacher can hinder or enhance this experience for the child. Some people view a conjoining of Christianity and Mathematics as improper. They miss the point of the relationship. The content of mathematics is not affected by Christianity. The relationship does not concern what, or how (the Christian doesn’t solve equations or differentiate differently), but it concerns why. It concerns such things as the interpretation and appreciation of the beauty, the symmetries, the coincidences, the remarkable properties, man’s creative role, etc. This paper explores the relationship between Christianity and mathematics as part of a panel discussion on the topic.

This article surveys the different views of mathematical methodology that occurred from ancient Greek times through the early modern period up until its codification around 1900. After summarizing the axiomatic approach advocated by Aristotle and implemented in mathematics by Euclid, the talk explores the character of analysis in ancient Greek times, its development into a symbolic algebra by Viete and Descartes, and its expansion into a calculus of fluxions and differentials by Newton and Leibniz. A Language Arts Project Involving The Construction Of A Solar Greenhouse By Navajo Children, Daniel J. Mclaughlin

This paper, in three parts, explains why and how fifth and sixth grade students at a Navajo bilingual elementary school in New Mexico built a solar greenhouse as a language arts project. The first part catalogues the English speaking, reading, and writing needs of the children. It details the rationale behind building a greenhouse to address these needs. The second part is the greenhouse project itself. It contains English lessons which the students used as guidelines for planning and building the greenhouse structure. The third part, found in the Appendix, contains one of the students' workbooks.

Continuing Education For Indonesian Language Teachers In Victoria, Australia, Lambert Kelabora

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The last ten years have witnessed a significant growth in the teaching of Bahasa Indonesia in Australia. Of the 98 Indonesian language teachers in 1975, 62 (63%) responded to the present study. Amongst them were eight native speakers of Bahasa Indonesian who are all teaching at private schools. This paper explores the needs for and the provision of in-service training amongst these teachers. Some suggested solutions to the problems in this field will be implicit in the analysis.

The collection covers topics concerning David Bancroft Johnson’s work with the Columbia, South Carolina school system and the origins of Winthrop. Correspondents include Edward Southey Joynes, J.C. Comparisons Of The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test And The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children-Revised With Late Elementary Aged Children, David Hughes

The purpose of the study was to compare the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) in an effort to establish an estimate of the similarity between the two measures. The sample included 194 nine, ten, and eleven year old children referred to the University’s Psychological Clinic. There were 100 males and 94 females with a mean age of 10 years and six months. Out of the 194 children, 106 were white, 46 black and 42 of unknown race. Pearson Product Moment Correlations were performed between the PPVT IQ and the WISC-R variables. As …
