The overall purpose of this quasi-experimental research study was to determine if a formalized leadership development program had an effect on a community college student's level of career decision-making self-efficacy. This research study utilized the Career Exploration & Decision-Making Learning Experiences Scale (CEDLE) and the Career Exploration & Decisional Self-Efficacy Brief Decisional (CEDSE-BD) questionnaire to determine a student's level of career decision-making self-efficacy before and after participation in a leadership intervention (n = 411). Eleganaboi was a traditional ceremony in Luro society which contained essential elements of local wisdom. This study aimed to investigating the values of guidance and counseling in Eleganaboi. To investigate the values of guidance and counseling, we use phenomenology qualitative descriptive method. To collect the data, we implemented observation and interview. The observations were carried out during a cultural ceremony in the Luro community. Furthermore, interview was conducted on four traditional leaders. Edicts and transcendental reduction were used to analyze data. The results show eleven fundamental values of guidance and counseling in Eleganaboi. The particular study aimed to determine the differences performance between school counselors in organizing individual counseling services in schools in terms of educational background and work experience. The research approach was descriptive survey through a descriptive comparative study design. The subjects were school counselor in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, especially at Bantul Regency. The data analysis technique used two way ANOVA. Based on the statistical tests, the educational background and work experience did not significantly affect the performance of school counselors in providing individual counseling services in schools.

The results of the study show that the counselors need CER-based media for improving the virtue of the junior high school students. Therefore, the counselor should search, find, create and even design the CER-based service media.

Using Tinto’s student departure theory (Tinto, 1975, 1993, 2012) and the simple view of reading (Hoover & Gough, 1990), this study explores the relationship between reading fluency indicators and achievement on the ACT reading sub-test and the ACT composite score. The study utilizes reading samples obtained from first-year college students attending a small, private university in the southeastern United States. A non-random sample of students (n = 95) was recorded while reading a college-level, informational passage measured at the 1470 Lexile level. Results of using hierarchical linear regression revealed that word reading accuracy as measured by reading miscues predicted …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The authors summarize 30 children’s books that tell stories of a family member’s military deployment in order to identify books that could be used in bibliotherapy for children impacted by deployment. In this sample of books, the main characters are most commonly portrayed as feeling sad about a family member’s deployment. The most prevalent coping strategies are finding ways to stay connected to the deployed person and talking with an adult. An unexpected finding was a coping strategy of expressing pride in the family member’s military service.

This article describes the development and initial score validation of the Mentoring Needs in Counselor Education Scale (MNCES), designed to evaluate the mentoring needs of counselor education students and pre-tenured faculty. Exploratory factor analysis (n = 278) yielded a 32-item, five-component solution with strong score reliability as indicated by Cronbach’s alpha values above .70: Career and Professional Development (.82), Research and Scholarship (.86), Growth and Support (.83), Multicultural and Environmental Issues (.84), and Practitioner Role (72). The MNCES provides a tool for facilitating conversations regarding mentorship expectations between mentees and mentors in the field of counseling.

Researchers conducted in-depth interviews with clinical mental health counseling students to understand perceptions of their instructors’ teaching practices. Using an-evidenced based teaching model as a theoretical lens (Malott et al., 2014), researchers highlighted students’ experiences, perceptions, and beliefs regarding teaching. Following a discussion, recommendations for researchers and counselor educators to improve teaching practices are provided.

Substance use disorder practitioners may identify as individuals in recovery, while others may have never experienced the challenge of abstinence. Without this lived experience, it may be difficult to accurately empathize with clients in recovery. Experiential learning is a way for students to live through an exercise in abstinence. The value of utilizing experiential learning for skill development and application of theory is established. However, there is no empirical research examining the use of experiential learning with undergraduate substance use disorder practitioner trainees not in recovery from addiction as a means to increase their ability to empathize with clients’ experiences. …

Based on a 5-year study at Montgomery County Community College (PA), during which academic support and mentorship programming was developed for student-athletes, four key pillars of support were identified as contributory to increases in completion rates, success rates and GPA among students from underserved populations (including, but not limited to, students who identify as being first generation, minority, LGBTQ, disabled, poverty-stricken, underprepared, non-traditional, international or displaced). Reducing Alcohol-Related Consequences Among High School Seniors: Efficacy Of A Brief, Web-Based Intervention, Diana M. Doumas, Susan Esp

The authors examined the efficacy of a brief, web-based personalized feedback intervention on reducing alcohol-related consequences among high school seniors (N = 105) using a group-randomized controlled design. Results of repeated measures mixed-models analyses indicated significant intervention effects over time for alcohol-related consequences at 30-day and 6-month follow-up assessments. Drinking risk-status moderated intervention effects such that results were only significant for high-risk drinkers (i.e., students reporting initiation of heavy episodic drinking at baseline).
