Maternal Perceptions And Responses To Child Sexual Abuse, Elizabeth Upchurch Willingham
Maternal Perceptions And Responses To Child Sexual Abuse, Elizabeth Upchurch Willingham
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
ABSTRACT MATERNAL PERCEPTIONS AND RESPONSES TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE by Elizabeth U. Willingham Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a complex phenomenon that requires various levels of intervention to address the safety, recovery, and prevention needs of children and families who have experienced victimization. Although there is a large body of literature that has identified and examined many aspects of CSA (Putnam, 2003), less is known about nonoffending caregivers of sexually abused children. The one consistent finding across studies that have investigated CSA, nonoffending caregivers, and traumatic stress in children is the importance the of child-caregiver relationship in facilitating recovery (Elliot …

Does A Continuous Measure Of Handedness Predict Reading Related Processes And Reading Skills Across The Lifespan?, Michele Harrison Brenneman
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
DOES A CONTINUOUS MEASURE OF HANDEDNESS PREDICT READING RELATED PROCESSES AND READING SKILLS ACROSS THE LIFESPAN? by Michele Harrison Brenneman The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between handedness, reading skills, and reading related cognitive processes. The research results with regard to handedness, specific reading skills, and reading related cognitive processes are ambiguous at best. The method in which handedness is measured contributes to these diverse research findings, therefore the present investigation addressed these methodological limitations. A large normative sample of up to 1383 participants that ranged in age from 4 to 80 completed the Woodcock Johnson …
Personality, Lifestyle, And Transformational Leadership From A Humanistic Perspective, Michele R. Frey
Personality, Lifestyle, And Transformational Leadership From A Humanistic Perspective, Michele R. Frey
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
This study examined the interrelatedness of personality attributes related to lifestyle constructs as defined by Adler (Ansbacher & Ansbacher, 1956), personality constructs for career success as defined by Hogan (1983), and transformational leadership style as defined by the Full Range of Leadership model (FRL) (Bass, 1990). Recent studies have suggested that certain personality attributes may be consistent with successful leadership ability (Bass, 1990; Hogan, Curphy, & Hogan, 1994). There is, however, a lack of research looking at personality attributes as determinants of leadership style (Lim & Ployhart, 2004). Adler (Ansbacher & Ansbacher), Hogan (1983), and Bass (1990) posited that all …
An Investigation Of Trauma Symptom Reduction In A Clinical Sample Of Sexually Abused Children Using The Trauma Symptom Checklist For Children, Sarah Denyse Brown
An Investigation Of Trauma Symptom Reduction In A Clinical Sample Of Sexually Abused Children Using The Trauma Symptom Checklist For Children, Sarah Denyse Brown
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
School counselors have a duty to formulate strategies that aid in the detection and prevention of child sexual abuse (ASCA, 2003). This may be accomplished in a number of ways, such as designing programs, providing training to teachers regarding recognizing and reporting abuse indicators, and collaborating with child protection and other mental health professionals to provide additional aftercare for sexually abused children in the school setting. Much can be learned about trauma symptomology from a clinical sample of sexually abused children. The Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC; Briere, 1996) is a 54-item self-report instrument for children and adolescents 8-16 …
Identity Development As The Parent Of A Lesbian Or Gay Male, Mary Jane Phillips
Identity Development As The Parent Of A Lesbian Or Gay Male, Mary Jane Phillips
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
This study is designed to more fully understand the adaptational processes that parents of lesbians and gay men experience when their children come out to them. Seventeen parents described their experiences in semi-structured interviews. The interview transcripts were analyzed using grounded theory methodology to develop a model of parental adjustment over time. Parents experienced three broad phases of adjustment, each with different emphases: emotional responses were most dominant initially, cognitive and behavioral adjustments were the primary focus of the middle phase, and moral/spiritual issues were the major concern of the final phase. Some parents who successfully negotiated these adjustments came …
Increasing Coping Resources: An Experimental Intervention Approach, Wendy Lynn Dickinson
Increasing Coping Resources: An Experimental Intervention Approach, Wendy Lynn Dickinson
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
Recently, 44% of college students reported increased levels of stress, and 28% reported feeling overwhelmed (e.g., The American College Health Association: 2004). Stress has been linked to a variety of physical and emotional problems (e.g., Matheny & McCarthy, 2000). A number of studies (e.g., Matheny et al., 1993; Matheny et al., 1986) have identified coping resources as helpful in decreasing the negative effects of stress. However, there are still some questions in the literature regarding effective ways to increase coping resources. Reading written feedback about coping resources is one way to increase individuals’ awareness about their coping resources (e.g., Matheny …
