The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of retention on the academic performance of students retained in the third and fifth grade during the 1985-86 school year. A follow up study was used to analyze changes in academic test results. Another purpose was to interview teachers who had retained students and teachers who had taught the children the next school year to determine what changes occurred in instructional practices. Forty retained students of Northeast Tennessee were matched according to sex and similar scaled scores on the Stanford Achievement Test. Scores were compared by grade and by year …

This project was designed to determine if significant differences existed between the level of psychological differentiation, as determined by the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT), of individuals entering a treatment center for chemical dependency and the length of stay at the facility.

The subjects consisted of 43 white males who were seeking treatment for addiction to mood altering chemicals at a regional treatment facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Each subject was interviewed to collect pertinent background information pertaining to past substance abuse and was evaluated to determine psychological differentiation, utilizing the GEFT.

Previous research has considered Mexican Americans as a homogeneous group in studies relating to education and career decision-making of adolescents. In a study of 22 Mexican American adolescents, using an interview format, results report similarities between lower and middle income Mexican American youth in occupational expectations and in value-orientations which are not characteristic of traditionalism. Findings indicate differences between the two groups in educational expectations, degree of certainty, effects of the familial environment, and in hope of success for the future. Both lower and middle income youth respond to parental influence no matter how close the relationship, but parental expectations, …

This study assessed the effects of a public-posting intervention on photocopy machine use by faculty members in an academic department. Public posting included posting of a chart that displayed number of copies made each week by individual faculty members along with the average cumulative rate of copying for previous weeks for each person. The intervention was applied in an A-B-A reversal design where data were collected prior to the intervention under usual conditions (A), during public posting (B), and after the public posting intervention was removed and usual conditions were restored (A). The study examined the relationship between selected demographic variables, occupational stress, and strategies. Experienced counselors in three eastern states were surveyed about the incidence of racial issues presented by their White clients and were asked to complete the White Racial Identity Attitudes Scales (WRIAS) and to respond to a questionnaire about a White client presenting a racial issue. Nearly a quarter of the counselors responding to the survey reported having some clients raising racial issues as main issues in counseling, and 45% reported having some clients bringing up racial issues relevant to their counseling. The purpose of this study was to test the Bean and Metzner Model of Nontraditional Student Attrition (1985) in a small, rural community college environment. The influence of selected sets of background, environmental, and academic variables from the model were tested, in addition to, the individual variables contained within each set. The differences between the persister and nonpersister groups were examined by variables.;Data was collected via the Student Entry Questionnaire and the Student Questionnaire. A second purpose was to identify differences in guidance services provided in selected urban and rural schools and also the perceived effectiveness and adequacy of the services as viewed by counselors and teachers. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two career counseling interventions upon the career decision-making self-efficacy of two groups of undecided high school seniors. The setting of the study was a large public high school in a metropolitan area in the Southeastern region of the United States. In order to identify students' initial levels of confidence and certainty for making career and educational plans, a brief self-report survey was administered to seniors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the classification congruency of Virginia school psychologists as it related to assessment profile analysis and, additionally, to examine assessment instrument rankings and demographic variables when classifying targeted handicapping conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of humor as a coping mechanism to relieve work stress of psychiatric registered nurses (RNs).;The population was selected from 31 volunteer RNs who worked thirty-two to forty hours a week in psychiatric hospitals in the Norfolk-Tidewater-Williamsburg-Richmond areas of Virginia. The RNs completed three pretest self-report measurements on stress. The Social Readiness Rating Scale (SRRS) was given to assess preexisting life stress.
