Guidance-Related Services Performed By Selected Classroom Teachers In Jefferson County, Kentucky, Joseph Riley

A selected sample of classroom teachers from the Jefferson County, Kentucky, school system, some of whom were also certified counselors, were surveyed to determine the extent to which they participated in certain teacher-pupil relationship activities.

From the survey, it was determined (1) that of the teachers surveyed those with counselor certification participated in seventy-seven percent of these selected activities; (2) that those surveyed classroom teachers that do not have counselor certification also participated in these activities although generally to a lesser extent than those with certification; (3) that both teachers without and those with counselor certification felt that a master's …

The purpose of this study was to analyze the counseling services provided by the Fort Knox Armor School to its students. Interviews and survey questionnaires were utilized to gather data for the study. Interviews were utilized to obtain information regarding the structure of the present counseling services program at the Fort Knox Armor School. Opinions regarding the present structure were twofold:

1. The present counseling services are adequate
2. A counseling services program comparable to a modern educational institution does not exist

This project is a study of the relationships of weather variables and non-productive classroom behaviors. Four observers recorded behaviors of over one hundred elementary students for a period of fifty days.

The weather variables used in this study may be divided into two major categories; visible and invisible atmospheric conditions. Visible atmospheric conditions included classifying the atmosphere as sunny, fair, cloudy, stormy, rainy, and phases of the moon. Invisible conditions recorded were temperature and barometric pressure.

This study attempted to develop and evaluate the content, format and effectiveness of a parent training course which emphasized democratic child rearing methods. The course was conducted by a school counselor in an elementary school. The content was a combination of Dreikur's child-raising techniques and Gordon's communication skills embodied into a commercial program called Systematic Training for Effective Parenting. The format for each of the nine suggested group sessions began with a leader-introduced topic, followed by large and small group discussions, simulated role play, use of worksheets, handouts, audio-visuals, and homework assignments. Samples of successful freshmen students voluntarily withdrawing from Campbellsville College were studied and compared to determine the reasons for leaving the College. It was anticipated that findings would help to identify some of the problems involved in student withdrawal, thus giving the College some better understanding with which to proceed in an effort to build retention.

This project was a study of values of selected seventh, tenth, and twelfth grade students in Kentucky and Michigan. Students were instructed to rank order ten of the twenty values listed on the Low Vocabulary Values Survey. Descriptive comparisons were made within groups and between groups relative to sex and grade level differences. "I believe in God" and "I enjoy life" were ranked highest by each of the groups. "I get an allowance" was ranked least frequently. Twelfth grade students ranked "I make my own decisions" and "I express myself" higher than did the seventh grade students. Seventh grade …

Children in grades one through six who were identified as children from migrant agricultural families in a specific country in South Central Kentucky were compared to non-migrant children in the same specific county. A determination of the educational needs of these migrant children was made by a comparison of their standardized test scores to similar test scores of children from non-migrant families in the areas of Reading, Math, AND Total Battery scores. Resultant data from the test scores indicated that migrant children generally do not have achieve as high academically in the areas tested as do children from non-migrant families. …

Two groups of males were utilized to examine the causal effect of facial characteristics and attitudes upon initial interpersonal attraction. The two groups were given a booklet in which photographs and attitude statements were paired in various combinations. One group of males was given the booklet with photographs of females non-randomly assigned; while the other group of males was given the booklet with photographs of females randomly assigned. The major finding of the Present study was that facial characteristics were more causal in predicting initial interpersonal attraction than were attitudes. The Jefferson County Readiness Test, a locally developed readiness test, has been in use in the Jefferson County, Kentucky elementary schools for seventeen years. This test had not been standardized and few studies were available to support its use. The JCRT was studied to determine if the test was a valid predictor of readiness and achievement. Phase I of the study was designed to study the JCRT as a predictor of readiness. Beginning first year students in one elementary school were selected and JCRT scores, Metropolitan Readiness Test scores, and teachers' perceptions of readiness were collected for each child. This study was undertaken in an effort to identify the marginal students at Western Kentucky University who will succeed academically only if they receive special help. Thirty-four male and eleven female marginal freshmen (ACT scores 13 to 17; GPAs 1.9 to 2.2) were tested with the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS) to explore the possible relationship of the EPPS need for achievement (n Ach) to the academic success of the marginal freshmen. The first-year shorthand class of Woodway Senior High School was given the test instrument, The Turse Shorthand Aptitude Test, to determine whether achievement in shorthand could be predicted by the percentile rank achieved on The Turse Aptitude Test. Comparison was made of the shorthand grades; SCAT-Total, and Grade Point Averages. The only significant correlation found was between first semester grades of first-year shorthand and the overall grade point average which was significant at the .03 level. The second semester grades of first-year shorthand and the overall grade point average was significant at the .13 level.
