Academically underprepared college students, i.e., those identified as needing developmental (remedial) English, mathematics and reading courses in order to maximize their potential for academic success at college-level studies, were provided with the opportunity to rent, for a minimal, subsidized fee, mini-computers bundled with digital course materials (e-books). The academic aptitude of the students who participated in the study was assessed when they entered the program, and their academic performance was assessed at the end of the semester in which they were provided with these resources. The aptitude, performance and retention of program participants were then compared with those of similarly …

The purpose of this present study was to explore the problems that Indian subcontinent students who participated in international study programs encountered in their travel abroad. Using a qualitative research methodology, four graduate-level Indian students were interviewed via a semi-structured interview protocol. Participants were asked to share problems they were currently facing or had faced while studying at a midsized, comprehensive institution in the Midwest.

Using cross-comparative analysis, verbal interview data were analyzed for common codes and categories and were then grouped into themes. Five themes were apparent: Homesickness, Culture Shock, Discrimination, Language Barriers and Educational Differences, and Other Issues. …

This study was designed to investigate whether mathematics anxiety is correlated to choice of major in college, the need to be enrolled in a remedial math course and average mathematics grades. Types of mathematical problems, statements and situations were also viewed to determine which of the latter caused the greatest anxiety among volunteers. Volunteers were given an experimenter designed mathematics anxiety survey in which they rated problems, statements and situations pertaining to math on a five-point Likert scale. Upon performance of correlations, results proved non-significant for all conditions. Thus, mathematics anxiety in this particular sample was not correlated to choice …

The purpose of this study was to examine to identify what influences college students to consume alcohol. Specifically, the research was susceptibility to social pressure and social expectations play the central role and are a major influence in college students drinking behaviors. Twenty-eight undergraduate students from various universities completed the Psycho-social Drinking Inventory. This is a scale from the College Drinking Influences Survey. Descriptive statistics were run on the scores reported on the survey to find the greatest mean score. The purpose of this study was to explore the possible correlation between the personality trait of sensation seeking and a student's field of study. The literature review shows the strong connection between both how personality can influence our career choice and how sensation seeking can affect multiple aspects of our lives. There were 117 Rowan University students participated and were administered a questionnaire created by Marvin Zuckerman called the Sensation Seeking Scale From-V. Same-Sex Vs. Co-Ed Classrooms: Do Gender Differences Carry Over Into A Co-Ed College?, Laura O'Malley

The purposes of this exploratory investigation were to (a) ascertain the current academic performance of Rowan University freshman (n=117) in their second semester, compare this with academic performance in their senior year of high school, and (b) determine to what extent, if any, their high school classroom gender composition influenced their current performance. Overall, female students who had single-sex instruction (SSI) averaged an 8% improvement in grades, while co-ed taught girls averaged 3% better. Male SSI students averaged 40% worse, while co-ed males averaged 12% worse. For male participants, data showed a moderate positive correlation (r = .38) between amount …

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the influence that images of models in beauty and fashion magazines had on women's body image satisfaction. Participants were 23 college women. They were randomly assigned to two experimental conditions: ten women were assigned to the fashion magazine group and the remaining thirteen were assigned to the non-fashion magazine group. A fifty-eight item questionnaire was used to assess overall body image satisfaction, appearance concerns, dieting and eating behaviors, and thinness ideals between participants who were exposed to depictions of models in fashion magazines and those who were not. Procrastination Behaviors In College Students, Lauren Rosetti

The purpose of this study was to explore a student's procrastination and how it relates to their motivation and self-esteem. Procrastination has been found in previous literature to be a prevalent behavior among college students, about 95% of students engage in procrastination. It was hypothesized that students who actively procrastinated would have a positive relationship with intrinsic motivation and high self-esteem. Three scales were administered to students in psychology classes at Rowan (n=69). Analysis revealed that no significant relationship was found between procrastination and intrinsic motivation or procrastination and self esteem. Implications for future research are discussed.

As advancements in technology continue to revolutionize the field of counseling, certain populations of students still encounter difficulties incorporating technology in the classroom. Non-traditional students, many who possesses years of professional experience, struggle academically due to a lack of technological expertise and knowledge. Low technological expertise potentially decreases students’ self-efficacy, enjoyment, and performance (Baturay & Bay, 2010). Consequently, it is imperative that counselor educators use a variety of strategies with non-traditional students struggling with technology. Thus, the purpose of this article is to propose guidelines encompassing self-efficacy, the evolution of technology and competencies required for assisting students in the classroom.

The study examined job satisfaction of counselors in various specialties and also across educational levels. The researchers administered the Job Descriptive Index (JDI) (Balzer et al., 1997) and the results were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of covariance to measure differences for counselors in regard to satisfaction with the work tasks, present pay, promotion opportunities, supervision, work peers, and overall career. Findings indicated that Doctorate level counselors were more satisfied with promotion opportunities than Masters-level counselors, and counselor educators were more satisfied with promotion opportunities than mental health, school, or creative arts/other counselors. This study focused on the level of depression in young adult caregivers (age 18-40) relative to gender, employment, health and relationships. Previous research found significant relationship between gender and depression. In this study, gender was found to be a contributing factor in depression among young adult caregivers; however, not a significant factor. This information may lead to broader ways of thinking about caregiving by counselors and individuals working with older adults.

White, male college (WCM) students have been a central focus of researchers in higher education throughout its existence, but have not been studied as a group whose identity development is a key issue. This study looked at WCM, their masculinity levels, and how their past connections with peers, instructors, or staff influenced their White identity development. In this study I utilized a phenomenological research approach to learn about the lived experiences of eight WCM. The eight WCM were at least junior status at a medium size, Midwestern, public university.

This mixed method study examined the perspectives of twelve practicing high school CTE teachers engaged in a newly approved university model for alternative certification.

Using Creswell's (2008) Sequential Exploratory Design and the lens of adult learning theory as established in Knowles' (1970) Theory of Andragogy, this study examines how participants in this CTE alternative certification program, describe their experiences as related to the assumptions of adult learning. This study used the national Beginning Postsecondary Study 96/01 longitudinal data set collected by the National Center of Education Statistics (NCES), which includes 12,100 first-time postsecondary beginners over a period of 6 academic years from 1995/96 to 2000/01.

Resident assistants perform various functions and serve students in many aspects during their time in university residence halls, with one of their central responsibilities being to encourage student development. This study examined the use of student development by resident assistants and its relation to supervisor knowledge and use of student development theory.

Informal conversational interviews were conducted with three Residence Life Coordinators at the University of Northern Iowa and three Hall Directors at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Between two and five of the resident assistants supervised by these individuals were also interviewed.
