Children's Perceptions Of Bullying Situations: Factors Influencing Peer Interventions, Allison Minchoff

Previous research is inconclusive as to whether racial biases are prominent in elementary school children and whether gender influences the children’s perceptions of a bullying situation. Since both bullying and racial discrimination are of increased concern, I investigated how children perceive ambiguous situations that could be considered deliberate bullying or an accident, as a function of the gender, race, and reputation of the potential bully. Participants were asked to read three brief scenarios, each accompanied by a picture of the potential bully, and completed a questionnaire regarding how positive they would rate the actor, how negative they would rate the …

Bullying continues to be a major concern in schools today. Many schools have implemented some type of bullying prevention program. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is one of these programs. Evaluation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is typically done through the administration of the Olweus Bullying Questionnaire to students and produces numerical data for its report. Results have been mixed, but often show some type of decrease in bullying activity.;This study evaluated the implementation fidelity and outcomes of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program in three elementary schools in Virginia. Education is an important part of a person's daily life. Basic, fundamental skills for daily living should be part of this education. At present, there is no consistent type of food safety training given to all students in the United States public school system. The aforementioned food safety training should involve the basic skills of personal hygiene: including hand-washing; understanding bacteria, their ability to multiply, and travel into our homes and our refrigerators; proper temperatures of food products; and safe steps of food-handling. The purpose of this study was to explore the psychological impact of a health promotion program on fourth and fifth grade students. Other research has demonstrated that this same program was associated with physiological improvements in elementary children, and this investigation explored whether students experienced positive changes in attitude and awareness which may suggest that improved behaviors will be sustained over time.;Two schools in rural Virginia were sites for this study. The purposes of this study were two fold: (a) to describe the interplay of the variables such as low progress, communication, instruction and help for a child, interventions, consultation services, meetings between the school and home, and peers as perceived by elementary children who have low progress in at least one academic subject, their parents, and their teachers; and (b) to describe roles and responsibilities of the teachers, parents, and children as they participated in pre-referral activities.

The purpose of this study was to assess the relative importance of the ten most significant components of an elementary guidance program. A second purpose was to identify differences in guidance services provided in selected urban and rural schools and also the perceived effectiveness and adequacy of the services as viewed by counselors and teachers. The study was conducted with elementary guidance counselors and elementary teachers in 48 urban and 48 rural schools in Tidewater, Virginia.

This experimental study examined the effects of different methods of training and verbal cognitive ability on second-grader's acquisition of social problem-solving skills and teacher-rated behavioral adjustment. Subjects were assigned by classroom to either classroom training only, classroom training with parent training, classroom training without parent training (those parents who were offered training but did not participate) or control. The 25-lesson Rochester Social Problem-Solving curriculum was taught three times per week for nine weeks by classroom teachers and a four session parent training component was taught by mental health prevention staff members and this researcher. When conflicts involving interpersonal relationships arise within the school setting, it would appear appropriate to attempt to cope with these conflicts within the framework of the school; particularly the classroom. Many methods of modifying behavior through group procedures have been attempted with varying degrees of success. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the effectiveness of one such method; a fiIm-discussion technique. This program was developed to modify behaviors, attitudes and/or perceptions which interfere with the development of constructive interpersonal relationships within an elementary classroom.

It was the purpose of this study to (1) compare elementary counselor's, principal's, and teacher's perceptions of the specific activities of the elementary school counselor; and (2) to compare the importance of eight general elementary counselor functions as ranked by the same three groups.
