The underrepresentation of Black and Hispanic students in gifted education programs is a longstanding concern involving equity and access in educational systems. This qualitative research explores the complex factors influencing this disparity, focusing on the role of teacher perceptions in the identification process. Elementary and middle school teacher participants (N = 14) from a single school district provided interview data. Data collection focused on interviews with classroom and gifted teachers related to the three research questions. The research design was a multiple embedded case study.

This capstone project addressed the challenges faced by new and experienced bilingual school bus drivers who transport special education students. According to the California Department of Education, transportation must be provided at no cost to those special education students ages 3-21 who are eligible as part of related services. The training for school bus drivers typically covers safe driving, vehicle operation, and basic student management. Little research has explored the field of science instruction tailored to students with significant disabilities. However, research studies have begun to emerge that suggest, with specific instructional strategies, these students can be successful in learning science curriculum. This project evaluated literature to find evidence-based instructional strategies for teaching science to students with significant cognitive disabilities. Six strategies were consistently found across multiple studies. The six strategies include (1) time delay, (2) systematic instruction, (3) multiple exemplar training, (4) task analysis, (5) graphic organizers, and (6) guided inquiry-based learning. In the span of seven teaching days, five lessons on the subject and two testing periods are the duration of time spent on the unit. This capstone project examined the impact of self-regulation and executive functioning skills of using a planner on eighth-grade students with missing assignments, who have mild to moderate learning disabilities, and other health impairments that impact their learning. Self-regulated learning strategies and executive skills, such as using a daily homework planner were explicitly taught during a five-lesson intervention to eight, eighth-grade Special Education (SPED) students during a Guided Study Hall class. In this qualitative multiple case study, I collaborated with five students who identified as proficient high-tech symbol-based (HTSB) AAC users, along with seven of their school team members (STMs) and five of their (FTMs) to explore the process of learning to communicate proficiently using HTSB AAC. Data collection involved three rounds of accessible interviews with student AAC users, single interviews with their trusted STMs and FTMs, and an examination of artifacts and documents. This phenomenological study explored the experiences of families and students of color and their teachers during junior high and high school IEP meetings. This study, informed by DisCrit, explored the similarities and differences of families, students, and teachers during IEP meetings as well as the use of research-based practices designed to increase family engagement for culturally diverse families. Participants completed surveys and participated in interviews about their experiences. The student’s most current IEP was also reviewed to determine the ways in which teachers document family and student engagement within the IEP document. The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was to examine the phenomenon of burnout in rural special education teachers of students with low incidence disabilities. For the quantitative phase, the Maslach Burnout Inventory- Educator Survey (MBI-ES, Maslach et al., 1986) was administered to 23 participants from geographically rural areas of one southern state in the United States. Descriptive analysis found that 92% of participants were experiencing high or moderate levels of burnout. Pearson correlation coefficient determined a statistically significant positive correlation between emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. A negative correlation was found between teachers’ age and depersonalization. Six participants …

This study involved an assessment of the effects of a remotely delivered behavioral skills training (BST) package on caregivers' adherence to an intervention plan for children with extensive support needs (ESN) involving an activity of daily living (ADL) skill. Intervention effects were assessed in a non-concurrent multiple baseline across participants design. The study included interobserver agreement and treatment fidelity measures during both baseline and implementation phases, as well as graphical and statistical analyses of intervention outcomes.
