The small, rural school, even when it is a part of a larger system does not generally have ready access to special education programs. The purpose of this investigation was to design and implement a minimum intervention program which would involve no additional staff, facilities, or expenditures. The minimum intervention program designed utilized a cross-age tutoring program which effectively removed students from one classroom and left it free to be utilized as a special education room for a specified period of time three days a week. The recent interest in curriculum development has empahasized the need for a framework in which to integrate many different education goals. Heiss and Mischio have proposed three criteria for a comprehensive curriculum. Good curricula which satisfy these conditions have been developed for use in the normal school programme. However, at present there is a great need for integrated curricula which attend to the special needs of children with general or specific learning disablilities.

A major purpose of this study was to subject the University of Northern Iowa's special education competencies to a consortium rating for determination of the relative importance of each competency for teachers of the mildly handicapped. A secondary purpose of this study was to determine the generic nature of these competencies.

The subjects involved in the study included Iowa special education teacher trainers; Area Education Agency directors and consultants for multi-disability programs; and special education teachers in multi-disability settings.

The purpose of the study was to determine if the skills acquired by trainees in the tutorial experience of the University of Northern Iowa competency-based program act as predictors in the group instruction experience.

This end was accomplished by comparing the scores obtained in the Phase I individual performance criteria against the composite score received in Phase II. A Pearson product moment correlation coefficient analysis was used to determine which individual Phase I criteria correlated significantly with the Phase II composite score. The volume presents data on patterns of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of teacher-identified handicapped students. The purposes of this investigation were to compare academic achievement levels in mildly handicapped students before and after intervention by the itinerant resource program, and to try to determine optimal duration of treatment by comparing gains in each of the two treatment phases. Fifty subjects were selected from six elementary schools, in which a resource room teacher also provided itinerant resource services. All resource programs operated under the New Mexico Learning Disability Fail-Save Continuum Project (Title VI Part G).

Staffing, facilities, and programming have been continual problems in institutional care of the mentally retarded. Gesell and I lg (1946) examined the institution in respect to developing the “self” of each resident. This study concluded that the institutional setting limited the resident's development because impromptu situations which build love, affection, and the feeling of belonging in the normal child were not present nor provided for in the institution. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a checkmark system as reinforcement for a group of eleven slow-learning children in the Special Education School in the City of Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. An assessment was made to determine the level of awareness among Utah public school special educators concerning the state's child abuse reporting laws and procedures. The assessment was made with a questionnaire developed by the author and mailed to those teachers involved with programs for the learning disabled, the emotionally disturbed, and the trainable and educable mentally retarded. Accompanying each questionnaire was a letter of transmittal and a self-addressed, stamped, return envelope. Two mailings were utilized, fourteen days apart, to achieve a useable 81.9% return.

The purpose of this study was, first, to examine and critique the more popular incidence sources for handicapping conditions in the school age population, and second, to establish reasonably reliable base line data on which the future analysis of special population groups can be grounded. On the basis of this study, we suggest that the National Center of Health Statistics estimates become the primary source for further analysis due to both their reliability and comparability. It is questionable whether these figures could be refined further by conducting an independent national survey of school children. Data reliability is important, since even …

This study investigated the scientific principle, that the level of still water remains horizontal regardless of container tilt, with fourth and eighth grade normal and learning disabled children. Measurements were made of the number of children in each group who knew the concept and of the ability of the "nonknowers" to learn the concept by an adjustment task.
