A Grounded Theory Approach To Use Of Differentiated Instruction To Improve Students' Outcomes In Mathematics, Juniace Senecharles Etienne Jan 2011

A Grounded Theory Approach To Use Of Differentiated Instruction To Improve Students' Outcomes In Mathematics, Juniace Senecharles Etienne

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Teachers in a school district in a southeastern state are being challenged to meet the needs of students who have learning disabilities (LDs) and who require an individualized education program with a mathematics goal. The students are in danger of not passing state, district, and classroom mathematics tests, and not all the schools are meeting adequate yearly progress (AYP). Funding from the federal government is denied if a school does not achieve AYP; the school personnel must then complete a school improvement plan. The purpose of this study was to explore which differentiation instructional (DI) practices inclusion teachers were using …

Current And Future Aac Research Considerations For Adults With Acquired Cognitive And Communication Impairments, Melanie Fried-Oken, David R. Beukelman, Karen Hux Jan 2011

Current And Future Aac Research Considerations For Adults With Acquired Cognitive And Communication Impairments, Melanie Fried-Oken, David R. Beukelman, Karen Hux

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Adults with acquired language impairments secondary to stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative diseases are candidates for communication supports outside of the traditional restoration-based approaches to intervention. Recent research proves repeatedly that augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) provides a means for participation, engagement, conversation, and message transfer when individuals can no longer expect full return of premorbid communication skills and that inclusion of communication supports should begin early. We discuss current research and future directions for integrated systems of technical supports that include low-technology, high tech, and partner-dependent strategies for adults with severe and chronic aphasia, cognitive-communication problems resulting from …

"They Need To Understand How To Educate Her": The Parent Experience In Special Education, Michelle Harvey

CMC Senior Theses

This study attempted to improve upon previous qualitative research by conducting a large scale, quantitative study on the parental experience in special education.  76 parents of children receiving special education services were surveyed regarding their communication with school personnel, the focus of their child’s education, involvement in the IEP meeting, and satisfaction.  It was found that parental perception of involvement did not predict active IEP involvement, more communication with school personnel, more satisfaction with services received, or the belief the child is benefiting.  An active role in the IEP meeting, though, did predict more satisfaction with the last IEP meeting, …

Digging Deeper: Enriching Transition To Adult Life Outcome Research Through Life-Histories, Jennifer Johnson Jan 2011

Digging Deeper: Enriching Transition To Adult Life Outcome Research Through Life-Histories, Jennifer Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Post-secondary outcomes for students with and without disabilities have been documented in transition research for over three decades. However, despite efforts to improve outcomes by the field of transition, former students with disabilities outcomes have remain lower than their non-disabled peers. Historically, the data, which has been collected mostly by means of survey research, has focused on what has happened to students since they exited school. Despite valiant efforts to improve adult outcomes, what has remained unclear, is why post-school outcomes have not improved in the areas of employment, post-secondary education, independent living, personal/social relationships, and community involvement.

Class-Wide Positive Behavior Support In Preschool: Improving Teaching Implementation Through Consultation, Deborah R. Carter, Renee K. Van Norman Dec 2010

Class-Wide Positive Behavior Support In Preschool: Improving Teaching Implementation Through Consultation, Deborah R. Carter, Renee K. Van Norman

Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Preschool teachers report children’s challenging behavior as their greatest concern (Alkon, Ramler, & MacLennan, 2003; Joseph & Strain, 2003), but estimates show that fewer than 10% of young children who show early signs of problem behavior receive services (Kazdin & Kendall, 1998). These data suggest that preschool teachers do not have the training or resources to implement research-based strategies. The need for effective and efficient behavior support in early childhood is apparent, particularly in light of the long-term negative effects of early problem behavior.
