The Effects Of Expository Text Structure Instruction On The Reading Outcomes Of 4th And 5th Graders Experiencing Reading Difficulties, Janet J. Bohaty
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a standard protocol supplemental expository text structure intervention (i.e., Structures) on 45 4th and 5th graders experiencing reading difficulties. Students were enrolled in six K-8 parochial schools located in a Midwestern suburban city. Within classrooms, students were randomly assigned to Structures intervention or a business-as-usual control condition. Students in the Structures condition were taught to identify and discriminate among the five text structures used by authors of expository text (Meyer, 1975, 1985): description, sequence, cause/effect, compare/contrast, and problem/solution. Students in the business-as-usual control condition participated in the …

Teaching Students With Special Needs In A Local Catholic K-8 School Setting, Allison A. Pheatt
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Many students with special needs are enrolled in private, Catholic schools and are included in the general education classroom. In most cases, these schools do not have the necessary resources or information on how best to serve these students. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a local K-8 Catholic school’s current special education program(s) and to document strategies and services that can be implemented in this school setting to serve students with special needs. A review of the literature revealed that teachers in a Catholic school setting are not aware of how to work with and best serve …
Exploring Cognitively Accessible Academic Lessons For Students With Intellectual Disabilities Using The Ipad, Jamie Linn Gunderson
Exploring Cognitively Accessible Academic Lessons For Students With Intellectual Disabilities Using The Ipad, Jamie Linn Gunderson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Students with intellectual disabilities often lack access to general education curricula. This is because many teachers struggle with adapting these curricula to meet the unique learning needs of these students. Technology, having the potential to facilitate access to general education curricula, has been successfully used as a tool to adapt curriculum for this population. The use of the iPad (Apple, 2010), which is easily programmed to support the unique needs of students with disabilities, is beginning to be explored as a tool for the learning and instruction of students with intellectual disabilities and results have been favorable. Further research is …
A Comparison Of Piprt To Vmo To Increase Social Play Skills In Children With Autism, Kathleen Scarlett Ohara
A Comparison Of Piprt To Vmo To Increase Social Play Skills In Children With Autism, Kathleen Scarlett Ohara
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Young children with autism often experience delays in social play skills. These delays result in poor relationships with adults and peers, decreased social interactions, and engagement, and eventually social isolation and withdrawal. Social play skill deficits are essential to the development of self-regulation and cognitive skills. Addressing these delays is critical to improve social functioning and minimize any detrimental effects on future engagement and academic achievement.
The purpose of this study was to use an alternating treatment design to determine whether PIPRT intervention or a VMO intervention would be effective to increase social play skills in two settings for four …

A Comparison Study Of Parents’ Perceptions Of Quality In Early Childhood Programs, Juanita Ortiz
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Research has demonstrated that high quality early childhood education (ECE) programs result in short and long-term benefits that are critical for children to reach their full potential and narrow the achievement gap. Parental involvement has been accepted as integral to quality ECE programs, and parental perception drives parental involvement. Perceptions and contributions of parents and caregivers including those who do not speak English have not been adequately addressed in the research. Furthermore, research has not addressed how parental perception regarding quality in ECE programs may vary according to whether their child has or does not have a disability.

A Case Study Of Landau Kleffner Syndrome: A Look At Strategies, Experiences, Challenges, And Perceptions Of Teachers, Family, And Support Personnel, George Mathenge Wairungu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is an unprecedented increase of rare low-incident severe disabilities in today's classroom. Some of them pose classroom management challenges due to concomitantly appearing behavior challenges. Landau Kleffner Syndrome is one such disability. It was cited for the first time in 1957 (Zhang, & Gregory, 2010) and is characterized by a typical language and cognitive growth that retrogresses after three to nine years of age (O'Hare, 2008). Behavioral regression is exhibited by students being physically and verbally aggressive (Ekinci, Isik, & Melek, 2012). Children also depict abnormal electroencephalographic (EEG) traits, especially when sleeping (Slyke, 2002). Other concomitant characteristics include attention …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Teachers sometimes experience problems with disruptive behavior in their classrooms. These aberrant and socially mediated behaviors can be difficult for teachers to manage without the proper research-based skills and training. This project explored the effects of training general education classroom teachers to conduct a functional behavior assessment and deliver noncontingent reinforcement (NCR) for disruptive classroom behavior(s). Participants included four middle school general education teachers and four students who have been identified by each teacher as exhibiting disruptive behavior(s). Procedures included four hrs of teacher training on conducting functional behavior assessments and delivering NCR followed by a post-training questionnaire and rubric …
The Effects Of A Training Session On Teacher Knowledge, Perceptions, And Implementation Of Assistive Technology In Secondary Schools., Robert Woodbury Jr
The Effects Of A Training Session On Teacher Knowledge, Perceptions, And Implementation Of Assistive Technology In Secondary Schools., Robert Woodbury Jr
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Despite the prevalence of students with mild disabilities in special education and the legal mandate to consider assistive technology to support their needs, research suggests low rates of assistive technology use by this population (Bouck, Maeda, & Flanagan, 2012; Derer, Polsgrove, & Rieth, 1996; Quinn, Behrmann, Mastropieri, & Chung, 2009). One major barrier to assistive technology consideration and implementation cited by teachers is a lack of training. This study examined changes in teachers’ knowledge, perceptions, and implementation of assistive technology as a result of a hands-on teacher training session. Participants included 61 regular and special education teachers and administrators in …
Perceptions Of Customized Employment Among Employers: A Survey And Focus Group, Melanie D. Adams
Perceptions Of Customized Employment Among Employers: A Survey And Focus Group, Melanie D. Adams
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Employment for individuals with significant disabilities can be achieved through customized employment. Unfortunately the employer perspective of customized employment is often overlooked. This study sought to identify employer's feelings about customized employment.
A focus group developed a list of barriers and facilitators to customized employment. The list was turned into a survey that was given to a different group of employers. The results showed that employers were unfamiliar with customized employment and were most concerned with the cost of accommodations. Researchers found that employers considered support from other agencies, financial incentives and increased productivity to be upsides to customized employment.

These programs were designed to help them increase PN ratios when interacting with students during homework time in the after-school program. Group 1 received only the …
Negative Reinforcement Through Contingent Easy-Task Presentation, Cicely Irene Nickerson
Negative Reinforcement Through Contingent Easy-Task Presentation, Cicely Irene Nickerson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Escape from instructional demands is one of the most common functions of problem behavior. Some research suggests that a switch from difficult to easy tasks may function as a reinforcer for problem behavior. This is of particular concern for situations in which easy tasks are part of the intervention procedure to reduce problem behavior. This project examined the reinforcing effects of a switch from low-probability (low-p) to high-probability (high-p) tasks for individuals whose problem behavior was maintained by escape from demands. It also provided preliminary evidence as to the quality of reinforcement provided by a switch from low- high-p tasks. …
Teacher- And Student-Developed Summaries Of Performance: Perceptions Of Teachers And Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors, Heidi S. Preece
Teacher- And Student-Developed Summaries Of Performance: Perceptions Of Teachers And Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors, Heidi S. Preece
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Special education students often struggle to access services upon graduation from high school. A summary of performance is a document that should ease this transition, but often is nothing more than a meaningless piece of paper. This study sought to use a student-completed portfolio as a summary of performance.
A student-completed portfolio and a teacher-completed summary of performance document was evaluated by special education teachers and Vocational Rehabilitation counselors. Results indicate the usefulness of a student-completed portfolio for person centered planning.

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Drug and alcohol abuse is one of the greatest challenges of public education. Substance abuse affects student academic performance. Teacher attitudes concerning substance use are linked to drug and alcohol use by students. The purpose of this study was to assertion teacher attitudes and beliefs about drug and alcohol use. The data were collected using a questionnaire. The questionnaire was a modified version of the Addiction Belief Inventory (ABI) based on the five constructs (e.g., coping, efficacy, disease, lack of efficacy, moral weakness) of substance abuse (Broadus, Hartje, Roget, & Cahoon, 2010; Luke, Ribisi, Walton, & Davidson, 2002). The participants …
A Translational Investigation Of Positive And Negative Behavioral Contrast, Megan A. Boyle
A Translational Investigation Of Positive And Negative Behavioral Contrast, Megan A. Boyle
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Applied behavior analysts implement research-based techniques to improve behavior. However, research with nonhumans suggests that intervening to improve behavior in one context may result in a worsening of that same behavior in another context (behavioral contrast). Although there are clinical implications of behavioral contrast, the vast majority of research on contrast has been conducted with nonhuman animals. Results from basic research suggest that contrast is influenced differentially depending on whether a change in conditions follows versus precedes a given context. For example, a child might encounter three contexts each day: home, school, and daycare. An intervention to reduce the child’s …

Analysis Of Data On The Effect Of Early Intervention For Children On The Autism Spectrum, Catherine R. Maxwell Dumont
Analysis Of Data On The Effect Of Early Intervention For Children On The Autism Spectrum, Catherine R. Maxwell Dumont
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Early Intervention promotes preschool age children, identified on the autism spectrum, with increased independence and positive social skills in the classroom. Preschool children who do not have access to such programs tend to display negative and socially inappropriate behavior, such as acts of aggression, withdrawal, and inability to attend to lessons. Lovaas as cited in Eikeseth and Smith (2011) is referred to as the pioneer of Early Intervention, who dedicated almost fifty years of his life to improving the lives of families among the autism community. Lovaas’ studies were the first documented to indicate that children who received early intensive …
Coming To Understand Diversity And Education: Life Experiences And Educational Opportunities, Steven Paul Chamberlain
Coming To Understand Diversity And Education: Life Experiences And Educational Opportunities, Steven Paul Chamberlain
Human Development and School Services Faculty Publications
Coming to understand how cultural differences influence interactions between educators and students and their parents is a complex and perhaps life-long discovery. Culture helps to define groups’ belief systems and expectations for appropriate behavior, often at a hidden level. Pre-service teachers need multiple opportunities to interact with diverse populations in supervised and reflective environments. This article recounts key experiences in one White American’s life that have led to his current understanding of diversity and the role of diversity in education. These experiences occurred throughout my life; some were by chance and others were more prescribed. The article concludes with reflections …

The purpose of this study is to document strategies and services that can be implemented in a resource model for a private, Catholic school K-8 setting to serve students with special needs.
A review of the literature revealed that teachers in a Catholic school setting, as well as parents, are not aware of how to work with and best serve students …
Giving A Voice To Parent/Guardians/Caregivers Od Students With Special Needs Within The K-12 Education System In A Suburban School District, Sara Cofiell
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Parents/guardians and caregivers who have children enrolled within support programs such as speech, OT, specialized support instruction, etc., may not fully comprehend the importance of the role they play in supporting their child’s education. Often they show up to their child's annual IEP (Individualized Education Program) and listen in silence. They may feel it is impossible to comprehend the process and/or the language used in the meeting, leaving parents/guardians and caregivers voiceless and at a loss as how to serve as an advocate for their child. “Almost 30 years of research and experience has demonstrated that the education of children …

From Adhd To Substance Abuse; Perspectives From Recovering Addicts, Elena Potovsky
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Abstract People who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are often at high risk of becoming substance abusers. Recovering addicts with both conditions provide a unique perspective on this phenomenon by sharing their insight. When a diagnosis is determined for a school age child, the Special Education teams mainly focus on the most obvious problems that occur with ADHD: executive function issues, reading and writing impairments, and disruptive behavior. They may not realize how common it is for those identified with ADHD to also become substance abusers, particularly due to school performance problems and difficulties in social adaptation. The literature …
