Perceptions Of Co-Teaching In Secondary Inclusion Classrooms, Tori Hill
Perceptions Of Co-Teaching In Secondary Inclusion Classrooms, Tori Hill
Doctor of Education Dissertations
This study examined secondary teacher and administrator perceptions of co-teaching practices as they relate to preservice and in-service training. In this mixed-methods study, general education math and English teachers and special education teachers in three suburban high schools were given a survey to provide input regarding co-teaching practices in their school/district. The survey results were analyzed to determine trends of variables relating to teacher perceptions. Additionally, interviews with four administrators (three schools and one district) were conducted to correlate expectations, strengths and weaknesses, and training with the results of the teacher survey. Multiple themes emerged, which included collaboration/planning, administrative support, …

The Perceptions Of Aac Professionals On Supporting The Clinical Translation Of Brain-Computer Interface Technology, Kevin Pitt, Miechelle L. Mckelvey, Kristy Weissling, Brynley Klein
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) provide access to augmentative and alternative communication devices by decoding an individual’s neurological activity. However, while BCI developments are progressing in the research setting, barriers still exist in the clinical setting. These must be overcome to support the successful translation of BCI technology into clinical practice which improves patient outcomes. Therefore, to help facilitate the clinical integration of BCI-AAC, our study sought to identify the perspectives of AAC professionals regarding their

Visual Scene Displays (VSDs) are a promising interface for AAC systems for children and adults. Although recent research has focused on design principles of traditional grid displays, there is comparatively little information on VSDs. Ten individuals with a background in photography and visual composition were interviewed following a brief overview of visual scene displays applied to AAC systems. Interviews were analyzed for themes, lasting around 45 minutes each. Participants gave feedback on principles of composition, how those principles inform their own work, and “quick tips” on matching photos with goals related to communication in VSDs.

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Background: Pacifiers are effective in promoting oral feeding by increasing the maturation of nonnutritive sucking to nutritive suck in preterm neonates. It is unclear whether pacifier design can influence suck dynamics and weight loss during the first week of life. Objectives: This pilot study examined the feasibility of studying the effect of pacifier design on suck maturation and weight loss in preterm neonates. Methods: Twenty-five preterm neonates (mean [SD] birth weight 1791 [344.9] grams, mean [SD] gestational age 33.1 [1.2] weeks) were studied in a single newborn intensive care unit. Neonates were assigned to either an orthodontic pacifier (n = …
An Examination Of Readiness For Response To Intervention Implementation In A Rural School District In North Carolina, Carla Murray
An Examination Of Readiness For Response To Intervention Implementation In A Rural School District In North Carolina, Carla Murray
Doctor of Education Dissertations
In 2015, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Exceptional Children Division proposed policy changes, effective July 1, 2020, on how students with specific learning disabilities are defined, evaluated, and identified. A student in North Carolina is now identified for special education through the use of how they respond to high-quality core instruction and research-based instruction. This study examined this process in a rural school district in North Carolina to determine how schools can support educators who do not have the appropriate background knowledge and skills to sustain MTSS, how educator perceptions influence the sustainability of MTSS, and what can …

All Institute for Community Inclusion Publications
The Spring 2020 semester began like most others. College and university campuses
opened, students returned from winter break, and academic courses resumed. By the
middle of March, the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact every aspect of our lives.
College campuses, where students live and learn closely together, were some of the first places to close. On March 7th, 2020, the University of Washington was the first large university to close its campus, and others quickly followed (Hess, 2020). It was a time of confusion, as higher education administrators grappled with how to keep their constituents safe while continuing to educate …

Internship is a critical feature of teacher preparation programs and can be one of the most influential experiences for teacher candidates. New technologies, such as eCoaching, demonstrate promising results in providing richer experiences to teacher candidates during internship. eCoaching allows university supervisors to provide real-time feedback on instruction and has proven effective at improving teacher change. However, eCoaching is different from traditional university supervision. In this case study, we describe the evolution of a traditional university supervisor using eCoaching for the first time and the support she needs to be effective. Implications are discussed.
Learning Strategies And Metacognition In Adults With Dyslexia, Bradley W. Bergey
Learning Strategies And Metacognition In Adults With Dyslexia, Bradley W. Bergey
Publications and Research
In this chapter, we review the literature on learning and study strategies of university students with reading disabilities. Increasing numbers of students with reading disabilities attend post-secondary education, and while there, many experience academic challenges related to their remaining reading problems. We propose that learning and study strategies are important compensatory mechanisms for these students, but conclude not much is currently known about the learning and study strategies that students with reading disabilities employ in post-secondary education. As a way forward, we identify measurement and sampling issues in existing studies as potentially responsible for the varied results and discuss the …

Transition planning is the foundation for addressing post-secondary goals leading to improved outcomes. Transition assessments guide the transition planning process. Given the importance of transition assessment results, practitioners need access to measures supporting the active involvement of youth with intellectual disability. One such method is the occupational interests card sort. This study investigated the use of an occupational interests card sort with youth with intellectual disability, assessing its impact on their career decision self-efficacy. Results indicated that the occupational interests card sort influenced young adults’ ability to select career goals, as well as identify career themes beyond occupational interests.

This is an excerpt from my book, ‘Essential Learning Theories: The Human Dimension’ published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2021.
Disclaimer: The special education teachers I have had the privilege to work with over the years are making a difference lives of their students. However, they are often trapped in a system that is broken. This system puts limitations on what they are able to accomplish. In this chapter (article), I am referencing this larger system. I am not referencing any particular school, school district, university, or teacher preparation program.
A disability is not disorder or deficit; rather, it is …
The Effects Of Three Service Delivery Models On Vocabulary Learning By Second-Grade Children, Laura Stone
The Effects Of Three Service Delivery Models On Vocabulary Learning By Second-Grade Children, Laura Stone
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) provide services to children in schools across the United States primarily in a direct small group service delivery model outside of the regular education classroom. To date little research exists to indicate that direct pull-out service delivery is an effective model in elementary schools for students requiring speech and language therapy. One area that has been studied is the effectiveness of vocabulary intervention among service delivery models. Preliminary findings suggest that students with language and literacy deficits learn vocabulary well within a regular education environment with SLP support. However, there is little consensus on how service delivery …
Resource Teachers And Multi-Tier Systems Of Supports: Black Males' Special Education Identification, Fredrick Brooks
Resource Teachers And Multi-Tier Systems Of Supports: Black Males' Special Education Identification, Fredrick Brooks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The disproportionality of students placed in special education programs continues to plague the education community, particularly Black male students. "For too many Black male students, learning difficulties or challenging behaviors come to be equated with disability, often without consideration of the way in which the environment of schools and classrooms contribute to student difficulties" (Jordan, 2016, p. 33). This study examined the lived experiences of resource teachers who lead Multi-tier Systems of Supports (MTSS) implementation in their schools. The study reviewed the extent to which their perceptions, perspectives, understandings, and feelings drive their problem solving and decision-making regarding referrals to …
Keeping Girls' Voices At The Center Of Our Work: A Phenomenological Study On The Discipline Experiences Of Black Girls With Disabilities, Whitney Hanley
Keeping Girls' Voices At The Center Of Our Work: A Phenomenological Study On The Discipline Experiences Of Black Girls With Disabilities, Whitney Hanley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Disciplinary exclusion is disproportionately enforced with Black students with disabilities. Researchers in this area typically examine the overuse of disciplinary exclusion using homogeneous samples narrowed by race, gender, or disability category; however, implications of the overuse and misuse of discipline have rarely been explored at the intersection of race, gender, and disability. Furthermore, Black girls with disabilities and their experiences with discipline are often muted, or overlooked. Due to perceived defiance, which current researchers support, the actions and choices of Black girls are under heightened surveillance. Responses to their behavior often results in inequitable use of discipline. A master narrative …

Improving The Sentence Writing Fluency Of A Student With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Speech/Language Impairment: A Pilot Study, Shawn M. Datchuk, Apryl L. Poch, K. L. Panos
Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications
The skill of sentence writing – the composition of connected text into sentence types understandable to readers – is foundational to written expression. Unfortunately, many students with learning disabilities – particularly those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and speech and/or language impairment (S/LI) – struggle to develop sentence writing and its multiple, related skills. Using a single-baseline design, we studied effects of a supplemental writing intervention on one elementary-aged student with comorbid ADHD and S/LI. The intervention entailed delivery of a writing fluency intervention with several antecedent- and consequence-based components: explicit instruction, fluency practice, a reinforcer survey, and contingent …
Assessing The Perceived Effectiveness And Acceptability Of Pre-Referral Intervention Team Procedures By School Teams: Continued Validation Of The Pre-Referral Intervention Team, Lindsey A. Finch
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The Pre-Referral Intervention Team Inventory (PRITI) is a 24-item Likert scale created to measure the perceived effectiveness and acceptability of pre-referral teams (PRTs) in a school setting. Initial studies have shown both two-factor and single-factor structures with high internal consistency. Acceptability of team procedures as measured by the PRITI showed expected relationships to the Team Climate Inventory (TCI) and the Revised Teacher Stress Inventory (RTSI). The results of initial studies suggest that the PRITI may be a useful measure for assessing school staff acceptability perceptions of PRT consultation procedures, but further validation is needed. For the current study, the responses …

A Review Of The Evidence Supporting Play-Based Learning For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Josh Wilson
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has become more prevalent through more diagnosis, with about 1 in 54 being diagnosed with ASD (Center for Disease Control, 2016). With more children being diagnosed with ASD, more services are needed. Adapted Physical Education (APE) is a direct service provided for children with disabilities, and APE teachers should use proven methods to effectively and efficiently assist these children in their area of need. Play-based learning has proven to help improve many social, communication, social skill engagement and play behaviors in children with ASD so play-based learning should be utilized more within the context of APE …
The Use Of Video Modeling To Teach Requesting For Conversational Repair In Vocational Situations, Bryn C. Handley
The Use Of Video Modeling To Teach Requesting For Conversational Repair In Vocational Situations, Bryn C. Handley
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
Video modeling has been found to be effective in teaching various skills to individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Despite this evidence, there is very little evidence to support using video modeling to teach specific soft skills in the workplace, such as requesting for conversational repair. This study evaluated the effects of video modeling on requests for conversational repair within vocational situations using a multiple probe research design. Due to unforeseen circumstances as a result of COVID-19, the study had to be concluded before all participants could receive intervention. However, an effect between video modeling and requests for conversational repair …
An Evaluation Of Sensory Paths As An Antecedent Intervention For Decreasing Off-Task Behavior In Children With Disabilities During Small Group Instruction, Hannah Keene
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of sensory paths as an antecedent intervention to decrease off-task behavior and increase on-task behavior in three elementary-aged participants with disabilities. A withdrawal design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. The results are corollary due to the unintentional A-B design (schools closed during this time period). There is some evidence that the sensory path intervention was no more effective in decreasing off-task behavior and increasing on-task behavior than baseline conditions. Future research is needed to further investigate the sensory path intervention.
