This literature review explored Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) with students who are not effective verbal communicators. AAC provides a means of communication for individuals who have disorders that impact communication. AAC is used in the form of low or high-tech device options to assist users in conveying messages to their communication partners. The focus of this review considers students with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities in the special education and general education classrooms and investigates teacher understanding of AAC, intervention options, and how AAC can be successfully implemented in classroom settings.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States, currently affects 1 in 54 children. As students with ASD spend more time mainstreamed with their neuro-typical peers, there is an increased need for effective social skills interventions that improve positive social interactions and promote friendships. This literature review focuses on Peer Mediated Instruction and Intervention (PMII) to increase social communication and interactions for students with ASD. A growing awareness shows that repeated exposure to childhood trauma is widespread and affects children’s emotional, physical, and cognitive development. The damage can be life-long. It is necessary for school systems to advocate for students through understanding trauma-informed strategies and interventions. A review of available literature investigated the impact of trauma on children’s physical and mental health, behavior, and academic outcomes in school settings. Research found that trauma largely impacts children’s cognitive functioning, increases likelihood of mental health diagnoses, and reduces student engagement. The literature review sought to determine the impact of traditional discipline and alternative behavioral interventions on student outcomes. The research showed that certain student populations including Blacks, males, students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and students with special education status were suspended most often. Exclusionary discipline was connected to lower academic outcomes, higher drop-out rates, and increased likelihood of suspension. Successful use of alternative interventions suggested that students need to be taught new behavior skills in order to learn them. Finding show that traditional discipline is not able to improve student outcomes. They also show that alternative interventions need …

Co-teaching is an instructional strategy wherein two teachers, a general education teacher and a special education teacher, share instructional responsibilities in a general education class that includes students with disabilities (SWDs) (Friend, 2010). Extant research shows that response to intervention (RTI) individual and small group interventions increase children’s reading skills; however, little information is available that investigates whether the type of intervention format makes a difference in learning to read. The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten class (ECLS-K) database was used to identify third-grade children who received individual, small group, or combined individual and small group tutoring, to increase their reading skills. The current study compared reading scores associated with each intervention type to determine which reading intervention format was most beneficial. Intangibly, it enhances the learner’s self-esteem and cultural identity. The case here reflects the Mandarin Chinese learning experience of three children who were born in the United States of a migrant family from Hong Kong where the Cantonese Chinese dialect language is more predominant. The role of the first language in English Learner (EL) programs has been a historically controversial one. In addition, how the first language should be used is not without controversy. This article examines the role of translation in the EL classroom and how teachers should employ it. One approach, concurrent translation, may be considered to be cognitively-undemanding and context-reduced. The author argues that purposeful translation should be cognitively-demanding and context-embedded.

Despite recent federal legislation outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) reauthorization of 2004 that mandates effective postsecondary transition planning for all students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), students with intellectual disability (ID) continue to experience inequitable postsecondary outcomes, particularly in the areas of postsecondary education (PSE), employment, and independent living (Lipscomb et al., 2017). Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition in the United States. In the United States, about one of every 700 babies is diagnosed with Down syndrome. The purpose of this study was to assess pre-existing data on a 13-year-old male with a diagnosis of Down syndrome to contribute to research on this chromosomal abnormality. The individual received speech and language related services at Western Kentucky University beginning in 2007. The Kelly Autism Program serves local students diagnosed with autism and offering educational support and after school services.
