The teaching profession requires educators to fulfill multiple roles—beyond instruction, they serve as counselors, mentors, behavior managers, and sources of emotional support, especially in underserved urban and rural communities. These roles often extend well beyond the classroom and require teachers to navigate complex social and emotional dynamics, all while maintaining personal emotional balance. Unrealistic expectations increasingly drive teacher burnout, making it a primary factor in teacher turnover. Teachers often use the terms differentiated instruction, accommodations, and modifications, but research shows that these words are not always understood or used correctly. This thesis reviews current studies to examine how these differences affect teaching decisions, teamwork between general and special education teachers, and students’ access to grade-level learning. The literature shows that when definitions are unclear, teachers may provide the wrong type of support or lower expectations, which reduces students’ opportunities to learn challenging material. This thesis explores the over-identification of learning disabilities among African immigrant English Language Learners (ELLs) in U.S. schools, examining both the individual and systemic factors contributing to disproportionality. By reviewing existing literature, the study identified five major factors: assessment and diagnostic bias, teacher knowledge and beliefs, contextual and school-level factors, structural inequities, and evidence gaps in research, revealing that overidentification often arises from the intersection of these factors. The review also highlights evidence-based solutions, including culturally and linguistically responsive assessment, continuous teacher professional development, family and community engagement, structural and policy reforms, and improved research practices. This thesis explores the effects of social media on adolescents, with a specific focus on the dual impact before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The research investigates the shifts in social relationships and communication during COVID-19, the influence of social media on adolescent mental health, educational challenges and innovations, and developmental processes and identity formation post-COVID-19. Key findings indicate that social media usage increased significantly during the pandemic, altering how adolescents interact and form relationships. Developmental disabilities, such as cognitive delays or autism, are often associated with challenges in verbal communication. These challenges can limit a student’s ability to engage and demonstrate understanding in academic settings. Identifying alternative forms of expression, such as manual sign language, can be crucial in promoting learning within special education environments. This paper explores research on the physical and mental skills involved in using manual sign language for communication, examines interventions that use sign language to enhance understanding and basic communication, and discusses the potential for generalizing sign language as a tool in academic and societal contexts.

The current higher education environment is plagued with declining enrollment (Eide, 2018) and shrinking budgets (Doyle, 2020) while historically under-represented and under-served students, including those with intellectual disabilities (ID) (Thoma, et al., 2011), have traditionally experienced limited access to higher education (Thelin, 2011). The American Psychological Association (2021) estimates that more than ⅔ of children experience a traumatic event by the age of 16. This literature review examines studies that investigated and evaluated the relationship between self-advocacy and college program completion in postsecondary students with disabilities. Research was reviewed that used school-aged participants with disabilities, postsecondary-aged students with disabilities, high school faculty, postsecondary faculty, parents of the students with disabilities, and two and 4-year college Disabilities Services staff. Many factors are involved in why students with disabilities tend not to self-advocate for themselves or ask for support or assistance in secondary and postsecondary educational institutions. The impact of restorative practices on school climate is affirmed as the fostering of teacher-student relationship impacts connection, empathy, and social skills. Bullying decreased, self-advocacy increased, and school communities became both more present and calmer comparatively. This literature review determined the feasibility and effectiveness of Immersive Virtual Environment (IVE) virtual reality head-mounted display (HMD) interventions to develop social skills for children with ASD. Data summarized 11 research studies conducted within the past five years utilizing HMD interventions. The research examined several HMD technology options across various settings such as school, home and community. Analysis of the data found that HMD interventions demonstrated promise in terms of feasibility developing social skills for children with ASD. Early childhood is a crucial time in a child's development and is often the entry point for a child experiencing developmental delays in the special education process. Parents play an essential role in the special education process as the child's primary caregivers. This study examined the decision-making process of economically disadvantaged Black and Hispanic/Latinx parents as they provide input on classroom setting decisions during preschool IEP creation.
