Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental syndromes characterized by deficits in communication, social interaction, imagination and sensory processing. The prevalence of ASD has increased significantly throughout recent decades. Given their concern about the diagnosis and their frustration that effective medical approaches are lacking, many parents and families of children with ASD have turned to alternative treatments and therapies for regulation of the behaviors and deficits observed in children with ASD. This literature review focuses on naming a variety of alternative treatments and therapies as well as examining their effectiveness for regulating behaviors in those diagnosed with ASD. …

Once students graduate from public education, the supports for individuals with disabilities change significantly. The law requiring school districts to support students with disabilities no longer applies upon graduation. As the familiar support structure no longer exists, the transition for students with disabilities is very difficult. The purpose of this qualitative case study will be to learn the perceptions of students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) in regard to accessing accommodations from the Office of Disability Services in a public community college setting, identifying barriers, and utilizing self-advocacy skills.

Graduation statistics indicate that students with disabilities like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are now completing high school at an average rate of about 60 percent. The purpose of this literature examination and application is to analyze the methodologies and criteria for the placement of high school students with ASD, to explore the present best practices in the assessment and placement of these students, and to suggest strategies to improve individual outcomes. Special education students with emotional and behavioral disorders have the right to receive an education that addresses their specific, individual needs. There are many challenges that accompany these students. It is beneficial for teachers to take a positive perspective of support and value collaboration with team members when working with these students. Teachers must also accept a mindset and perspective of the importance of inclusion for all students, regardless of disability or behavioral challenges. All students deserve the opportunity to access general education curriculum with their peers. This is how E/BD students will achieve future success.

The purpose of this study was to understand the parental perspective and satisfaction with the transition process as their child, who is a student with special education needs, moves from the junior high to the high school setting. For students with disabilities, transitions within the education system can be more challenging and difficult (Hay & Winn, 2005; Hill, 2010; Kinney, 2006;) than for students without unique learning needs. This applied dissertation investigated how Muslim parents of children with special needs bring understanding to raising their child with special needs. This researcher conducted a qualitative study to find out if Muslim parents from different ethnic backgrounds had similar experiences to those studied by Jegatheesan, Miller, and Fowler (2010). The researcher developed and administered qualitative interviews to four Pakistani Muslim parents in England and three Somali Muslim parents in Minnesota.
